About this property
Horse Ranch on the Yellowstone River. Close to Gardiner and Yellowstone Park.
If you are looking for a perfect base camp to explore Yellowstone National Park and Montana, you've found it! Our guest house is situated on the banks of the Yellowstone River, just 17 miles north of Yellowstone National Park. It is a free standing structure which sleeps 4 comfortably. Stay with us and you'll have easy access to the river, the national park, and the rest of the "Big Sky" state of Montana.
Our family raises horses and maintains pasture and grazing for clients. In the summer, you'll witness the everyday chores of a working ranch--irrigating, haying, fencing, etc. In other seasons, breeding and training horses take up good parts of the day. While you enjoy the peace and quiet of this agrarian setting, rest assured that it's a short ride to the amenities of town. We think it's the best of both worlds.
National parks, you may know, are not pet-friendly. We offer a variety of kenneling choices for dogs, and corrals or stalls for horses. Guests are free to keep their pets in the guest house, if they wish.
Children especially, but adults as well, are encouraged to enjoy our cats and dogs, collect fresh eggs from the chicken coop, watch as horses are trained in the round pen or as ferriers tack shoes on their hooves. It's a safe, fascinating environment, and a welcomed reprieve from the rigors of traveling.
We're happy to help you plan your days, in and around the Yellowstone ecosystem. Hopefully, you'll return home with an idea of what life is like on a ranch, as well as many memories of Yellowstone Park and "Big Sky" country.
THE SPACE The guest house is clean, comfortable, and has all the basic amenities. The queen master is downstairs with a closet, dresser, and fan. The full bathroom with a stand up shower, vanity, separate toilet room is on the main floor.
The kitchen and living room complete the ground floor. The kitchen is fully equipped with a full size refrigerator, freezer, coffee maker, basic spices, oven, range, microwave, toaster, baking and cooking equipment, cutlery, glasses, bowls, plates, and more.
A view of the Yellowstone River consumes the east facing window of the living room. Two rocking chairs, a sofa, small ottoman and chest make a cozy seating area. Satellite TV programming and a flat screen TV make winding down at the end of the day easy.
Steep stairs lead to the loft with two twin beds, a small seating area, closet and fan.
The side room in the hallway has a washer and dryer for guest use as well as all veterinarian supplies for livestock.
The house shares a front space with horse tackle and feed. We provide a big crate for your dog should you ever leave them at the house to go into the Park or out to dinner. Dogs are never allowed unattended and at large in the guest house.

Loved the location and the hosts, everything was perfect! Can't wait to come back and we enjoyed being a little further out from everything and enjoying nature.
Clean and convenient to Yellowstone. Views of the Yellowstone River are beautiful. The setting is very peaceful. The sofa and rocking chairs are very comfortable and the lock to the guest house entrance access was not functional.
We absolutely loved our stay here. The property was quiet and in a picturesque setting. Vern, the owner, was great in that he gave us great information about where to spot wildlife in the area. Everyone was kind and helpful. The property was very clean and comfortable. The property is close to the north entrance of Yellowstone, so it was very convenient to visit the park. We would definitely stay there again.
We had an experience we will never forget here! The cabin is clean and has everything you need. The location is prefect for local sightseeing/activities. The best part is meeting the hosts Vern and Laurie and their incredible hospitality. This property gives you a real feel for life in Montana and we can’t wait to come back.
It was just perfect. About 6 miles to wedding venue, so that was nice. Apartment was well stocked, clean, and quiet. Loved the dogs and loved Vern and Laurie! When we come back, hope to stay with them again. We fell in love with Montana and Vern and Laurie were a big part of it! Thanks for everything!
My family and I enjoyed our stay in this lovely property! Very cozy and peaceful setting. We loved the rustic furnishings and the hosts could not be more friendly & welcoming. We highly recommend this property!
There's a reason this is a top rated spot. It was incredible, Vern and Laurie were such gracious hosts and helped us plan our days. The reviews I read before booking were spot on! We spent 4 days here and will be back! One note - If you have young kids or anyone in your group is afraid of heights, don't plan on them staying in the loft (2 single beds). It worked out fine for us but it took my 6yo some time to be ok with coming down the ladder.
We stayed almost 3 weeks and just about everything you'd need is there with wonderfull snowy views. If you go in winter, be sure to get a 4WD that sits a littke higher than a sedan.
We loved our stay at the Smith Family Ranch. The cabin was very comfortable and had everything we needed. The host had lots of great suggestions for seeing wildlife outside of Yellowstone Park. The horses, dogs and chickens were an added bonus. It was convenient to the town of Gardiner and the park but also allowed for hiking and wildlife viewing outside the park.
Great location, 16 miles from Gardiner (northwest entrance). Very clean place, Vern was very helpful on his suggestions as to where to visit. We visited all the locations at YNP, went to Jackson hole and big sky. Definitely would visit again.
We had a great stay at Vern and Laurie’s guest house. A comfortable house in a beautiful setting. We really appreciated the proximity to Yellowstone as we visited there quite a few days. We really enjoyed the patio and firepit. We would definitely stay here again.
We absolutely loved our stay at the cabin. The Smith Family went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and made us feel incredibly welcome. Their kindness and hospitality made our experience even more memorable
The cabin is clean, the owners responsive, and the view is astounding. We had a wonderful stay and would recommend this property to anyone! Vern gave wonderful tips on how to fill our days and was always ready to help with anything, even bringing us wood for a fire in the fire pit. The cabin is well equipped for meals. I can't speak to the TV in the home, we never turned it on!
Vern and Laurie Were wonderful hosts. Their property is amazing and we felt right at home. Loved all the animals, the beds were super comfy and had all the comforts of home. Location was amazing with the mountains and ranches.
We loved our time at the guest house! The house had everything we needed, and Vern and Laurie were generous with tips about when and where to enter the park, and where we could see bears! Perfect spot for our family to explore Yellowstone. Thank you!
Great little cabin right on the yellow stone river. Going to bed and waking up to sounds and sites of river was great. Vern was great showing us things to see and making sure we got the most out ourtime. Dont forget getting to see tge horses and dog, and magnitudes of other wildlife.
We had such an amazing experience at this horse ranch! The owners let our girls take on some of the duties of ranch life by gathering eggs, tending to the horses and more! We got to see a lot of wildlife staying here! Our children loved being able to climb the ladder to their loft! So much a memorable stay!
This property is stunning both inside and particularly out. The views are incredible and wildlife is abundant, in addition to the the farm animals on property. Great place for kids and adults. The hosts are wonderful people who were extremely helpful in pointing us to the best spots in Yellowstone. You will not be disappointed if you land here.
