About this property

Magical Tower Views, Garden Patio, Steps to Historical Village Centre, Kids OK

Stay at the most beautiful (and most photographed) spot in Burgundy, nestled in the charming, quaint, peaceful medieval village of Semur-en-Auxois...voted in 2025 as the third most beautiful village in France!

Our lovely restored two story cottage with a large, detached riverside garden, patio, orchard and vineyard awaits you. On the banks of the gently flowing River Armançon with views of the cathedral, castle towers, and ancient bridge, the house is just a stroll away from the town center.

The location offers convenience, privacy, and off-street parking in the cul-de-sac.

Walk up the gently winding stairs around an ancient Burgundy tower for your morning baguette or croissant, or watch the village wake up from your table in a friendly café as you sip your first espresso of the day.

This enchanting village of 3,500 is both vibrant and relaxing, a hidden treasure. Host a garden party or just relax on our large garden patio with stunning panoramic views of the towers. The detached garden/vineyard/orchard is 60 steps from the house along the river (which keeps the ants in the garden, not in the house!)

Offering tranquil relaxation an hour from Paris by TGV train and minutes from the cobblestone walkways of the village centre, the location is ideal for your next romantic or family getaway.

You can explore the lively Burgundy region on day trips by bicycle or car, go wine tasting, hop on a fast train to Paris or Euro Disney with the kids. There is a fresh water lake 3 km away for swimming and boating, a bike rental shop in Montbard that will deliver rental bikes to the house and a rental car can be delivered to the Montbard train station for your pick up and return.

Your home away from home is comfortably decorated to create a warm, cozy home base for your Magical History Tour of the Burgundy Region. Perfect for small families and the dog or two couples traveling together. The house comfortably sleeps 4 - 5, with two large bedrooms plus a sleeping loft. There are modern appliances, dishwasher, washer and dryer, a towel warmer in the bathroom and a soak tub.

Charming cozy cottage

Lovely experience all around. Semur is gorgeous and Bourgogne itself is a feast and a revelation - so many interesting things to see and do. The house is warm and appealing, decorated tastefully with beautiful authentic period pieces. It also has all modern amenities in place - very comfortable. The owners were responsive, friendly and helpful. We’d come back every year if we could!

Very good for a town break, with lovely view

Semur en Auxois is a beautiful place, and the location with a short walk up steps straight into the town centre is excellent. The classic town view is right outside the bedroom window. A pleasant, characterful property, with typically French antique furniture although this is formal rather than comfortable and storage space is a bit limited. Not so easy for children. Worked well for two, would be OK for four but five would be a squash. The garden is a beautiful quiet spot, although not actually adjoining the property, so you can't just spill out of the house and use the extra space. Check in and check out are 5.00pm and 10.00am, not as advertised on the initial publicity. NB Deposit is quite large, and takes a while to be returned, so make sure you have the cash flow to manage that.

We suggest everyone read the property description thoroughly, as we are quite explicit that the garden is detached from the house and 65 paces along the river. The view is certainly worth the walk. We have been unable to determine why VRBO/Homeaway keeps giving out the wrong Check out/in times. We have scoured our listing and it clearly says 10am/5pm, as it aways has been, to allow the cleaners to have enough time to make the house ready for the next renter. Please be advised that the refundable deposit is handled by VRBO, not us; we have no control how and when it is refunded, which is usually within two weeks or sooner.

exquisite location

If anything the listing undersells the view from the house, it is spectacular and right in front of you. Walking around the old city is a rare pleasure, every corner you turn presents a comically gorgeous view; my friends and I felt like we were on a honeymoon. Our favorite meal in town was at nearby (everything is nearby) Le Saint Vernier and we got great inexpensive wine recommendations from l'Epicerie de Semur.

lovely home in beautiful Semur

Small but cosy house with antique furniture. The fact that the garden is not connected to the house was a bit of a dissapointment for us, but as it turns out we didn't read the description well enough as it is mentioned in the description on the website. Apart form that it is a great little house and we had a wonderful stay!

Living in history

Semur-en-Auxois is a really nice medieval town in Burgundy. From the house you are in the center in no time. Just passing the pont dinard and going up the stairs. As for the house, this was done in old French style too. Everything is there including a nice collection of old crouset pans. The beds were a bit too small for two men in our family (>1.90mtr) but hey, they coped and survived..:-) We really enjoyed the garden as well for BBQ meals and aperitief. Happy to have stayed in this house of Sarah and Ken. In case of questions they responded very quick. We wish them well and hope they can enjoy their home after ‘Covid season’ is over.

Bourgondisch verblijf

Magical views .

Property is located in the lovely town of Semur en auxois with amazing views of the towers and ramparts next to the Pont Pinard and beautiful river. Shops and restaurants within a 5 minute walk. The house is well equipped with everything you need but we did struggle for cupboard space in the kitchen for our shopping/food. Lovely views of the town and river from the bedroom windows but again there was lack of wardrobe space. The beds looked lovely but the one in the main bedroom was really squeaky and creaked every time one of us moved in the night. So we moved into the other bedroom and we found that we kept rolling into the middle of the bed, even though we are of average size and weight.. This isn't a complaint but just letting you know in case you're unaware of these issues. The house has a beautiful garden with an orchard which is secure for dogs. Our dog loved it ! The garden and patio area is not attached to the house but is only a brief walk...around 60 steps...around the corner. There are 4 parking spaces available on a first come first served basis but there is a garage at the garden to accomodate a medium size car. Overall a beautiful stay in a very old quaint french style character house.

Gorgeous location and village

Overall we had a great stay. The area is so picturesque. One thing to note is that this property accepts pets, which was evident from all the dog hairs on the rugs. Unfortunately for us with a crawling 7 month old baby this wasn't the best mix. Also the bed was not very comfortable with a weird combination of ply and mattresses being used. Apart from that however it was good, it had all the facilities and was a very quirky old property. The garden was also great and we enjoyed some wine whilst surrounded by greenery.

Great little house in spectacular location

A week at Ken and Sarah's house is a bit like time travel. Located next to the river beneath the ramparts of a medieval town it is surprisingly quiet and cool even in the middle of summer. We particularly enjoyed spending time in the orchard/garden/vineyard. Excellent kitchen and wifi/tv if you prefer to stay in

Magnifique emplacement

Fantastic experience in a beautiful location!

This home has all the modern touches with appliances and the fully stocked kitchen equipment , and yet maintains the character of the era by its furnishings and decor. We could not be happier with the experience of staying in this cottage in Semur en Auxois. Walking to the village center each day for coffee was a great experience, and the restaurants were all fantastic. I'm really glad my husband and daughter and I had the chance to enjoy and explore the the Burgundy region with our base home in Semur. I highly recommend this cottage!

Thank you for your feedback, and we hope the panoramic tower views from the garden patio made the 60 steps to the garden patio worth the trip. (BTW, a detached garden means no ants in the house!) About the host

Hosted by Ken and Sarah

Host profile image
We enjoy biking, hiking, gardening, wine tasting, fine dining, learning the French language, and immersing ourselves in the French culture and lifestyle.

We fell in love with Semur-en-Axois and spend as much time as we can there each year refining the property and garden. We also have been making attempts at coaxing some drinkable wine from our small vineyard.

Returning to the same beautiful location during different seasons we have found builds more vivid memories and relationships which nurtures us during our busy city lives in San Francisco the rest of the year.

We also donate a portion of the rental fee to the "Friends of Semur" Association dedicated to historical preservation, restoration, and promotion of local Arts and Culture. We are proud to have been part of the restoration of statuary in the corner niches seen throughout the town.

Why they chose this property

We have traveled the world, and when we stumbled upon this hidden treasure of a charming, lively little town, we had to be part of it. It is incredibly peaceful there.

We love harvesting and enjoying the seasonal fruit from the orchard, as we know you will, too.

The town is about an hour east of Paris by nonstop TGV, easy to get to and smack dab in the center of the Burgundy wine and cheese making region.

The house is located at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac that offers both peaceful tranquility and easy access to the town center.

The entire town is an historic monument status and yet still retains a vibrant local culture with modern amenities and restaurants open all year.

Once you visit this enchanting, tranquil, and friendly town, you will understand how we feel.

What makes this property unique

This house has both the feel of a French country farmhouse and pied-a-terre in town. Children's laughter echoes down from the primary school up on the ramparts above, punctuated by lovely birdsong and the busy ducks on the lazy river below.

The views from our property are some of the most photographed scenes in all of Burgundy. The visual beauty is stunning and inexhaustible!

A few steps along the river brings you to our cloistered vineyard, fruit orchard and garden, where you can enjoy quiet meals from our patio with stunning tower views.

During the summer months, there are weekly festivals in town as well as wine events at local wineries in the fall. The town has an historic Italianate Theatre, which hosts musical concerts and other events throughout the year.

The town is well situated for wine and cheese tasting day trips, and there is huge freshwater lake and beach nearby for swimming and boating.

You may want to hang out in the local cafe in town and soak up the ambiance of the local culture, take in a current run film at the local movie theatre, or rent bikes to explore ancient ruins and ride along the famous canals of Burgundy at Motbard. During the summer months, there is even a bike rental shop that will deliver your bike to our doorstep!

The Abby of Fontenay, also classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site like the entire town of Semur, is just a 30 minute car ride though the lush, rolling farmlands surrounding the area. There are many nearby historical sites, and points of interest to visit, including the Forges of Buffon, Vezelay Abby, the interactive museum of Alesia, Chateau Neuf, the cave paintings at D'Arcy sur Cure, the wine center of Beaune, the historic city of Dijon, and the village of Flavigny, where the famous anise mints are made and the movie "Chocolat" was filmed.

Whatever your unique taste, this town has much to offer.
