Cute little guest house with absolutely stunning views of the valley. Easy check in. Quick drive to Carmel by the Sea for shopping and eats. Great access to Big Sur. Would stay again!
We just finished a wonderful 3 day / 2 night stay. It was exactly as advertised - amazing views, exceptionally clean, private and comfortable. Would definitely recommend and hope to stay again!
Enjoyed my quiet time in the guest cottage. It was warm without ac but so beautiful. I wish the bedding was more upscale and hotel like. Other than that, it was perfect!
This was the third time I have stayed here - and have loved it each and every time. Easy access to all we need while in the Carmel Valley - private and secure - phenomenal views and love the bathroom and shower!
Clean, well appointed, loved sitting on the deck in the AM with a cup of coffee and evenings with a glass of wine! Will be back!
We stayed over the weekend at this guest house with beautiful view, it is very quiet and relaxing. The house is clean and has everything you need to make coffee or dinner. There are many good but a bit pricey restaurants around the corner. We also liked gorgeous living room with so much light and spacious bathroom. We would love to come back.
Expected to have at least coffee and paper products to start stay. Large window in walk in shower lacked feeling of privacy. Heater / exhaust fan extremely noisy. Small screen television. Bed linens were well used. Nice location , perfect space and amenities for a couple. Would be perfect with a few upgrades. We would consider renting here again.

Thanks for your feedback Christopher! I apologize that coffee and paper towels weren't provided, that definitely shouldn't have been the case. I'll see if I can get the bathroom heater to quiet down.. We will swap out the worn linens and consider upgrading the TV.
The photos are accurate. But the property is pretty dirty (outside). Cobwebs everywhere. The deck and railing are old, the lights barely illuminate the steps. Directions are incomplete - there are two low stone walls.
Inside is as described. Two windows are pretty stuck and without screens.

Perfect location...in need of TLC
The charming cottage built on the top of owner’s 3-car garage is quiet and private, and has great views. It is a perfect place for a short vacation, well-appointed, with very nicely decorated living room and a modern bathroom also w. view. Unfortunately, everything looks tired and worn-out; cleanliness lets a lot to desire, especially in the bedroom. Wi-Fi and cell phone reception are excellent. The highlight of the cottage is the wrap-around terrace w. gorgeous views of the valley (and of the main house), but the outdoor furniture has reached the end of its life, especially the cushions. Roger gave misleading info re. issues mentioned in previous reviews: none has been fixed by mid-April, the kitchenette is very poorly equipped and it is BYO even for minimal meal prep. It is hard to understand the glowing reviews – the place has tons of potential, its location is splendid, but it is a far cry from 5-star.

We love our guest house and sharing it with guests. This is clear from our history of hosting hundreds of guests with overwhelmingly positive reviews since we opened its doors in 2007. Unfortunately, as the reviewer pointed out, we had let a few things slip in terms of monitoring the cleaning crew and some of the décor.
Since the above review was posted, we have replaced the outdoor furniture (new Adirondack chairs w/ covers and table), welcome mat, comforters and pillow shams. We have re-stocked the kitchenette. We have also taken the sofa upholstery to the dry-cleaners and have scheduled a carpet cleaning for the area rug (both of which will be done on a regular basis going forward). I will be posting photos reflecting these changes within a week. While you can see parts of the main house through multiple oak trees, the orientation of the guest house is predominantly towards the mountains of Carmel Valley.
We look forward to accommodating you and getting back on track with our positive review record.
Sincerely,
The Hawleys

The guesthouse is charming and peaceful, the views and oak trees are lovely, and the furniture comfortable. Before booking, I would inquire whether some needed repairs have been made. The sliding door to the bathroom is jammed, resulting in lack of privacy. The bedside lamps both have broken switches, so the only operable switch is by the door. There is no light over or near the dining table. If you intend to cook, you will need to bring your own cooking equipment, as only one tiny saucepan and a scratched Teflon skillet are provided. The small refrigerator has only a tiny freezer compartment. There is a nice two-burner cooktop, a small microwave, but no oven at all. The "toaster oven" is really a slot toaster with a compartment just big enough for a couple of bagels or croissants. The coffee maker is only 2 cups. There are only a few dishes and no serving bowls. The wifi works great and cell phone reception is good. The TV is small, the CD player doesn't work, and the "music library" consists of 7 CDs. There is no provision for playing DVDs.
The hosts were pleasant people to deal with. I feel confident that they will address these concerns.

Thank you for your feedback. We are constantly trying to improve the guest house experience. Please know we are in the process of addressing the aforementioned issues. We are going to replace the CD stereo system with a docking station/wireless speaker system, hopefully something with a video output to the TV. We will also add a lamp for the living/dining room and increase the selection of utensils and pots/pans in the kitchenette.
I hope we may accommodate you in the future!

Nice updated guest house but some issues need to be addressed. Would give 3.5 stars if allowed.
Overall the place was nice, but we had some disappointing issues. The guest house is updated and has beautiful views. I emailed the owner the day of to let him know that we were looking forward to our stay. He immediately responded stating he was looking forward to accommodating us. With that said, when we arrived everything was closed up and uninviting. The rental was a little musty with lots of cobwebs and spiders. Once we opened it up and got some fresh air and cleaned up cobwebs, it was much better. The biggest problem was the rodent in the wall at night. It woke me up at 2 am on the first night and kept me up until 3 am on the second night. It was horribly loud. It was squeaking, chewing and digging all night in the bedroom. I notified the owner that morning and have not received any response since.
The bathroom is very nice and updated. The bed is comfortable. Pillows are flat as pancakes. If you like fluffy pillows, you may need to bring your own. We rented the house to go to a wedding. We had dresses and suites and the closet has a shelf in it that does not allow you to hang a dress or suite.
The living space is comfortable and provides amazing views. The kitchenette is nice and clean. Bring your own coffee. There is a coffee maker but limited amount of coffee grounds in a jar.
It's a great location. It's a quick drive to the restaurants and wineries in the village. It's also a short drive to get a massage and breakfast at the Carmel Valley Ranch.
I have rented dozens of homes on VRBO all over the country and out of the country. 99% of the time I have given extremely positive 5 star reviews. I was disappointed that I did not receive a response in regards to my sleepless nights due to the loud rodent in the wall. Had I received a response, I would have given a higher rating. I wish I could have given a higher rating and a better review.

I apologize for not having responded regarding the rodent issue. My wife and I welcomed premature identical twins to our family this year and I haven't been on top of my inbox as much as usual. The rodents haven't been an issue for our guests in the interim so hopefully they have left. That said, I take guest comfort and communications very seriously - I apologize for not exceeding your expectations in this regard.

Spectacular views but in need of much TLC!
Although the views from this guesthouse are spectacular and it is located in a very quiet area this rental is in need of some definite TLC which becomes obvious especially if you rent for more than a few days, we rented for two full weeks. The rental has a general musty odor that never cleared up as every day when we departed and arrived back…the musty odor was still quite apparent. There was a dank smell coming from the kitchenette sink. The refrigerator is an under counter small refrigerator that was in desperate need of the freezer section being defrosted as the ice cube trays could barely fit in it. All linens, bed sheets and towels, had a very sour musty smell that even after staying 2 weeks and being provided a second set of linens by week 2 still had the sour musty smell. The bedroom linens are in desperate need of replacement as they are worn out and barely fit the bed. The bed pillows are flat foam pillows which also have a distinct foul odor. There are no screens on the four bedroom windows making it difficult to allow fresh air in for any length of time. The lighting in the great room is not sufficient to read by while sitting on the couches nor to do computer work at the dining table. The hanging slider door to the bathroom is not easy to move and could us a handle of some sort. All carpeting needs cleaned as well as the upholstered dining room chairs. The closet has an odd cupboard installed across the middle which prevents the ability to hang a pair of slacks. The closet was stocked with only 5-6 wire hangers. Be aware that this rental is built above the owners three car garage, we were woken up by a loud racket a few mornings at 6:45am when someone departed and the garage door went up and down right under the bedroom. We did not contact the owner during our stay as we felt many of the fixes would have been intrusive and taken some time to repair. We did make contact after our stay and requested some compensation but were denied such. The owner did appreciate our feedback. Unfortunately, this rental is in need of some real attention and maintenance not just housekeeping services after each guest. We are baffled by all the positive reviews – the place has potential, its location is outstanding, but a 5-star accommodation it is not. For the past 17 years, we have rented from VRBO/HomeAway all over the USA and abroad and have left many positive reviews. However, this was not one that we could leave such a positive review.

This is the first overwhelmingly negative review we have ever received. We were saddened that someone did not enjoy our guest house. However, they did stay the entire two weeks without letting us know about any of the aforementioned issues. Could it have been that bad? We have always tried to take care of any maintenance or other requests made by our guests. Most of the items mentioned in the review have been addressed. We look forward to earning 5-star reviews in the future.
Airbnb review & private feedback from 4/25/18:
“Incredible view, very clean, exactly what you would want for a comfortable stay in one of the most beautiful parts of California. Thank you Rogers!”
Lindsey’s private feedback for you:
“Our stay, although short, was exactly what we needed on our short trip to Carmel! Your guest house was easy to find, clean, comfortable, and in the perfect area for us with an amazing view. We felt we could really see the effort put into making guests feel at home. Thank you for sharing your guesthouse with us!”
We had a great stay here for an impromptu trip to Carmel. Rogers was great about accommodating us on short notice. House is exactly as listed. Except the view is even better in person. We woke up and had tea outside and did yoga on the deck. Not even 5 minutes from Garland reserve which was a great hike, 25 from Point Lobos, 20 from Carmel by the sea. I would gladly book again.
We had a great stay in this cottage for a weekend get away. It’s comfortable and cozy, and the views of Carmel Valley off the deck and from the living room are amazing. Quiet and private, we enjoyed staying here.
My friend and I had a great time during our stay! We were provided with very intricate directions to the guest house because the neighborhood in general is very secluded. It is a beautiful area and I was able to take in the area by going on some nice morning jogs. The owners live on the property in the main house, and are very accessible if need be. We ran out of soap our first night, and they made sure to leave a replacement bottle outside of our door in the morning. Super responsive and kind! Would definitely recommend!

About the host
Hosted by Rogers
Hello! We look forward to accommodating you at our wonderful spot in Carmel Valley. Our son, Rogers helps us manage the guest house so he'll be your primary point of contact when coordinating your stay.
Why they chose this property
Carmel Valley is known for its great climate, rustic feel, and beautiful scenery. We actually reside in the main house which sits lower on our property. There are no direct sight lines between the two houses and often times we don't even meet our guests (although we most certainly enjoy when we do). It has great southern exposure and views onto Garland Park, the eastern part of the valley, and the Santa Lucia Mountain Range.
What makes this property unique
There are a quite a few nice things about the guest house. Please read the guest comments in our online guest book and view the photos as they best describe the benefits and amenities that our guest house has to offer.
We completely remodeled the guest house in 2005/06, and many guests have told us how much they like the 'feel' of the place. We've been on VRBO since late 2007 and have been excited ever since at having guests enjoy the beautiful place we call home.
