About this property

3 Beautiful Rooms In The Creative Home of SF Artists

The location is amazing! Easily walk to Chinatown, Little Italy, Financial District, Ferry Building, Fisherman's Wharf, Union Square, Lombard St, Market St, Nob Hill, tourist sites, restaurants, bars, cafes & more! Bike to the Golden Gate Bridge! Close to Cable Cars, Bart, buses & Muni trains. Lots of nearby parking options. Our home is great for friends, groups of couples, business travelers, families, etc.

The original redwood trim throughout our 1907 house was personally restored by me, Sara. My partner, Aaron and I, custom-built many pieces of furniture for our home. We also made most of the artwork throughout the house. We are San Francisco artists and designers who recently created the regenerative-themed decor for a new performance venue in SF. By making a reservation, you are not only giving yourselves a unique experience, you are also supporting art and culture in SF.

* 3 PRIVATE ROOMS (2 Queen Beds and 1 Queen convertible sofa bed with foam topper)
* You can use all 3 as bedrooms OR use 2 beds and have a private living room space (the living room is an enclosed room with a door).
* Vanity sink room and bathroom with shower/tub - shared with hosts (Sara & Aaron)
* Kitchen & eat-in dining room - shared with hosts (Sara & Aaron)
* Central! Perfect location for work or adventure
* Lots of nearby PARKING options (free and paid)

This listing is considered a "hosted" rental instead of an "unhosted" rental. We, the homeowners, will be staying in one room of our home while you have the private use of the other bedrooms and the shared use of the kitchen and bathroom.

Flexibility Regarding the 4pm Check-In Time
* If you get to San Francisco late in the evening/night, that's no problem: There is a key lock box to retrieve a set of keys at any point after 4pm.
* If you get to San Francisco before 4pm: You can generally drop off your bags earlier than that (after the previous guests leave) while I am cleaning the house in preparation for your arrival, then come back at some point later (anytime after 4pm) to make yourselves at home.

Flexibility Regarding the 11am Check-Out Time
* While I request that you be packed up so I can start laundry and cleaning at 10am, you can generally leave your bags behind while I'm cleaning the house and come back to pick them up before 4pm. There might additional flexibility if needed, so please ask.

A HISTORIC RESIDENCE

Amid an abundance of restaurants, cafés, bars and markets, you'll be able to have a comfortable home! This is the 3rd floor of a building constructed shortly after the San Francisco earthquake and fires of 1906.

Room 1: This room has two large windows from which you can see Coit Tower and the Washington Square steeples. It has an L-shaped couch that converts to a very comfortable queen bed with a thick foam topper or can be kept as a couch and used as a living room. This room also includes a dresser with a secretary desk, 2 mid-century club chairs, and artwork made by us, the homeowners. This room gets lots of sunshine, fresh air, and you can enjoy some of the neighborhood sounds like parrots, church bells, and sidewalk musicians.

Room 2: This room has a queen bed with an antique bed frame powder coated red orange like the Golden Gate Bridge. Enjoy the Alexander Signature Hybrid mattress by Nest Bedding (perfect blend of pocket coils and memory foam). This room has 2 lamps, two mirrored bedside tables, and a matching dresser. There is a TV with Netflix and internet capability and the bedroom is lined with restored original redwood trim and artwork. There is a large window that faces the lightwell between our building and our neighbors, so it's fairly quiet while still allowing for some sunshine and fresh air. This room is next to the kitchen and closest to the bathroom.

Room 3: This room is between Room 1 and Room 2. It has a queen mattress and redwood headboard made by another SF artist. It has a dresser with a sectary desk and chair. The window opens to the hallway and lets in sunshine from the skylight above the stairwell. Thus this room gets natural light but is the quietest in the house, perfect for light sleepers who crave a silence for a great night's rest.

At the end of the hall is a sun-filled kitchen and dining area. The kitchen has a gas range and oven, fridge, and various kitchen tools to make home-cooked meals. The bright dining area is a wonderful place to enjoy some coffee and breakfast before heading out for the day. Feel free to just use the dining table as a desk/work space.

As mentioned above, this building is from the early 1900's and has some unique features that have been added over the last 100 years. Walk through the kitchen to a small room with windows to the ceiling. This converted porch was probably once used for drying clothes. It now has a bathroom sink, mirrors, and storage. Through another door is the bathroom with a toilet and shower/bath that was built some years after the 1907 parts of the building. This may not be your usual bathroom experience, but you are visiting San Francisco after all and will get a glimpse of the historic nature of SF homes.

The bathroom includes a make-up mirror, blow dryer with a diffuser, cotton balls, q-tips, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, ear plugs and a few feminine products in case of emergency.

The house doesn't include a clothes washer and dryer, but there are several laundromats within a few blocks.

Abundant Parking Options:
There is free street parking in the neighborhood. Most of it has a 2 hour limit between 8am Monday - 9pm Saturday. So, you can park for free in a spot from 7pm in the evening to 10am in the morning before you have to move. Since the time limit doesn't apply on Sunday, you can leave it from 7pm Saturday night to 10am Monday morning for free.

There are also parking meters in the streets immediately around the house. They are enforced Monday to Saturday 9am to 6pm. So you can park for free from 6pm to 9am and all day on Sunday. After that, it's around $2.25 per hour which you can pay at the meter with change or a credit card, or from your smartphone with an app called PayByPhone. You can even pay in advance for the first 2 hours of parking in the morning the night before by using the app.

With any street parking or meter parking, *please* be sure to read the *signs* and the *parking meter* itself for any limitations such as street cleaning hours.

There is a parking lot right in front of the house. It costs $15 for each 12 hours. If you use the car during the day then you could just pay $15 for the night. Or you can park in the lot during the day for $15 and park on the street for free at night if you want to.

You can also park in a number of nearby parking garages. There are 2 parking garages a half block away on Vallejo. The Vallejo Garage charges $3-4 per hour. The North Beach Garage charges $4-5 per hour. They have an "Early Bird Special" where Monday through Friday, if you enter between 4:30am to 9am then exit before 10pm, the Vallejo Garage charges $18 and the North Beach Garage charges $20. They both charge $36 for 24 hours. So you could park in the garage during the day then park on the street for free and save $16-$18. They are open 24 hours a day.
The North Beach Garage 735 Vallejo Street, San Francisco, CA 94133
Vallejo Street Garage 766 Vallejo Street, San Francisco, CA 94133

There is a parking lot across the street at 626 Green Street which charges $11 until 7pm.

The Powell Street Parking garage is usually $12 for a weekday from morning to about 6pm. The price goes up in evenings and weekends, however as stated earlier you can park for free in the evenings on the street. They close between 10pm and 2am depending on the day. So you could switch off between the garage during the day and street at night and save money if you wanted to.

Great Home Away From Home

I loved the location of this property. It was super easy to navigate to other areas of the city from this spot. Sara was a lovely host going above and beyond to make me and my friends feel welcome. She had everything we had forgotten and was super sweet and easy to communicate with. The decor is eclectic and the beds super comfy. Would definitely stay here again.

Central and welcoming

Sara is a lovely host, has thought of everything to make your stay comfortable and is very thoughtful (bought us a loaf of gluten free bread for our coeliac son even!). The location is great, easy to find and easy to get around. Great place to stay and highly recommend.

Great location for exploring San Francisco

The property was as listed. Very convenient to San Francisco landmarks, Coit, Lombard, cable car turnaround, plus a short walk to the wharf. Loads of Italian restaurants close by, but also Safeway/Trader Joe's. The owner is very hospitable and offered some great insight, including Basically Free Bike Rentals. She even went out of her way to have some milk, fruit and coffee for our first day. I was hesistant as this was my first shared VRBO experience, but this went very well for my family, including a 7 and 9 year old. There's a great park close by too. And lots of gelato . . .

I really appreciate getting to know my guests and hearing about their lives. I enjoy hearing about your exploring adventures, what you do for work or what you did at the conference, etc. I love giving recommendations and discussing options for what you could do. However, I also am happy to give you space and privacy. In which case, I'll simply ask if there's anything you need and how you're doing. I do my best to gauge my guest's desired level of interaction but I also welcome direct communication. As in, feel free to tell me you would like more privacy/space or more interaction.

I treat everyone - regardless of their race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, or age - with respect, kindness and compassion, and without judgment or bias. This is an LGBTQIA friendly household.

Why they chose this property

While new to this site, I have hosted hundreds of guests at my home since 2017 with a 4.9 star overall rating and have received many happy reviews. Here's an example:
“I'm not sure that it's possible to write a positive enough review for my experience at Sara's - but I'll try. The house is fantastic, clean, well equipped and with fantastic internal decor - and interesting water saving devices. The location is excellent, hidden away between North Beach and Chinatown, and perfectly located for any exploration of San Francisco. There are more restaurants, bars and general interesting sites within walking distance than anyone could possibly cover in one trip. However neither of these things are important - the reason that I can't say enough good things about this experience is Sara herself, and the environment she engenders. Sara is one of the loveliest, friendliest and all around most positive people I've ever met. She is a font of local knowledge, tips and interesting information, but is also quite willing to chat about most things, and genuinely wants to ensure you have the best possible stay in San Francisco, and experience the city in the best way you can. I'm sure I could say more, but if I haven't convinced you to stay here yet then it's your loss. I'm sure there are other places to stay in San Francisco where you can enjoy the city, but I am convinced this is the best.”
- Douglas (who rented a room for 6 nights October 2018)
