About this property

Romantic Riverside Town House On the Banks of King's River

Bridge House is situated in the heart of historic Callan town with its many traditional pubs, historic sites and shops within walking distance. A mere 10-15 minute drive from medieval Kilkenny city with its magnificent castle. Lovely setting adjacent to King's River in historic Callan, Co. Kilkenny. Superb riverside terrace and garden. Minute walk to pubs, shops, restaurants. Local historic sites including Augustinian Priory behind the house. Delightful river views from most rooms. This 4 bedroom townhouse offers the best of both worlds - romantic riverside setting with lovely views of King's River and Bridge (circa 1800) whilst being situated in the heart of historic Callan town (one of largest towns in Kilkenny) founded by William the Marshall in 1207. In 2005 Neil Jordan's film "Breakfast in Pluto" starring Liam Neeson and Cillian Murphy was filmed here and in 2007 Callan celebrated its 800th year! Inside Bridge Houses are 2 floors: ground floor comprises hall leading to a large kitchen, separate dining room with patio doors to a large riverside terrace, lounge, reading room and separate wc. Upstairs there are 2 single bedrooms and 2 double (both king size beds), all with built in wardrobes, plus a fully tiled shower room with shower cubicle, toilet and basin. There is a large south facing riverside terrace to the back with steep steps down to a riverside paved patio and large lawned garden with hardstanding for a car. There are many places of interest in the immediate vicinity including The Moat just off Bridge street, one of Ireland's best preserved Motte-and-baileys, The Workhouse in Prologue, Callan and Callan Augustinian Priory, to name but a few. Callan is the birthplace of some famous people including Edmund Rice founder of Christian Brothers (whose childhood home is still in place), poet in exile John Locke (1847), James Hoban (who designed the White House), Irish painter Tony O'Malley. Callan has a good choice of traditional pubs, shops including supermarkets and restaurants as well as good road and bus links to other main towns and cities.

Callan Experience

The Callan house was fine as a base to explore County Kilkenny. It’s not the most glamorous place but it was adequate for our needs (5 adults). David was there to greet us and responded quickly to an issue we had with the shower. The house is a bit ‘tired’ - if you’re expecting luxury you will be disappointed. Callan is a little village with a couple of pubs and supermarkets for supplies. Easy access to Kilkenny and good as a base to explore the area.

Family time

The house is a typical Irish house. The back raised deck with the river view lovely. They went overboard to accommodate us since we nded up with 7 family members. Feannelly’s for breakfast was top drawer and just cross the bridge. Her granny’s brown bread the best I’ve had. Town has a tourism grant and is working on some improvements to the area that will enhance it. It was fun to stay in a real town and the community was welcoming.

Deceiving pictures on site

We booked this property for 4 nights, but only stayed for 2. Upon arrival, we quickly realized that the pictures on the VRBO site are very dated. Overall, the property is in dire need of updates. The deck is in poor shape, with exposed wires above the door. When we entered the property, we were greeted with a stagnant, musty odor and the presence of cigarette smoke (owners claim it is a non-smoking property). There were spider webs/spiders throughout the property. The kitchen is very sparsely equipped. There were one and a half rolls of toilet paper (5 people, 4 nights?), no paper towels, napkins. When I communicated this to the owners, they responded that they recycle paper products and that it is not a bed and breakfast (?). While linens were provided, my sister's bed sheets were stained upon arrival. For the price, I would not recommend this property (towels not provided, electric is not included). We chose to leave after staying two nights. We stayed at 3 other properties while in Ireland, which were all superb. The owners did not offer to refund any money, nor did they attempt to address our concerns. We took pictures of the property, so if you are considering staying, I would be happy to share the pictures with you. I would have posted them to this site, but did not see the option to do so.

a pleasant home in a traditional Irish village

The location on the river is very nice, the house is clean and functional. We missed the wifi, the waterpressure in the bathroom is not great, but all in all we had a very pleasant five days Callan.

Quaint village townhouse with ruins in the backyard.

The Riverside Town House was great. Perfect location for touring the area. It was very clean, well equipped and had a wonderful washer and dryer. David was great to work with and very helpful. Several pubs, bakery and grocery stores within walking distance. Beautiful location on the river with amazing views of the village and the Abbey ruins behind the townhouse. We would recommend the Riverside Town House to anyone touring the Kilkenny area. Thanks, David!!

Enjoyed the location and area

The property was ideal in many ways but there are a few suggestions that would improve a stay here. No internet! A big disappointment as we couldn’t sit in the house and plan our next day to the extent we would have liked plus all the other things the internet brings ie bus times in the local area and other things going on. Ancient television where the screen couldn’t show whole text of subtitles. Decking area needs a spruce up and if you are on one of the bedrooms on the road side the early morning traffic passes within a couple of feet of your window and is quite noisy. These comments do not in anyway detract from the very enjoyable time we had in Callan and we would certainly recommend and return if the oppprtunity arose.

Perfect small town in Ireland

It was a great little place in Ireland. The river is so beautiful. A lot of great places were nearby, the butcher shop and bakery for example, that made Callan like a home. This location is also great as a jumping off point as it is 2-3 hours from any attraction in Ireland. We had many chances for day trips as far as Portmagee and Kinsale using Callan as our jumping off point. The owners are wonderful people and very accommodating. On one rainy day in Ireland we noticed the DVD player stopped working as we were watching a film. David, one of the owners, brought over a player so we could finish our movie rentals. This was a dream come true for my mother who never thought she would be able to make it in her lifetime. Thank you for helping make her dream come true.

Great base to explore the area

The river house in Callan was full of period features such as thick walls, fire place which provided a great ambiance. David was easy to deal with and was more than willing to accommodate any requests that we had. Callan is a great place to walk around. There were few evening dining options although the Swann was a great place to eat. The nearby bakery was amazing and people were really friendly. It is a great place for a family or small group.

great place to stay

We enjoyed our stay at your rental property in Callan. The location was central to all the places we wished to visit. The home was very clean and stocked with all that we needed. The view from your patio was stunning. We will be sure to mention your place to our friends when we return to Canada. Many thanks, Audrey, Vivian, Randy and peter.

Beautiful Vacation Home

David and Maria were excellent hosts! Their house is beautiful and the view is gorgeous! We loved staying in the small town of Callan after having spent 6 days in Dublin. It was nice to be able to relax in such a quiet beautiful setting. Everything you need is within walking distance including a supermarket, bank, pubs and takeaways. David and Maria went above and beyond for us to make our stay pleasurable. David picked us up from the bus station (he waited a good while since our bus was delayed about 30 min) and they even helped us with mail when we couldn't fit our package in the post box! The access to Kilkenny city is very easy with two bus companies stopping in the middle of town as well cabs. We hope to be back one day soon and highly recommend this property for your holiday! Thanks again David and Maria for an amazing time!

Der Ort selber bietet in Laufweite alles was man benötigt.

This property is centrally located in the village of Callan on Co. Kilkemny.

This property is adequately appointed for up to 6 guests comfortably. It is well cared for and maintained. The property host was considerate and accommodating of our needs as travelers from the USA. We were able to make several lovely day trips from this location, on which we explored the cities of southeast Ireland and the sea coast. A great family holiday! Thank you, David!

Enjoyed the surroundings and the house was a great self-catering stay.

The Bridge House was a good size for the 4 of us traveling together. The lovely patio deck was perfect for coffee in the morning. The location was great for daily road trips through out the area. There isn't a lot of restaurant selection for late meals if you're not cooking for your self. We would recommend this house to others driving in the Kilkenny area.
