About this property

Secluded hamlet over lake and mountain, flocks of lambs and dams, stunning views

The ancient Irish name of this farmhouse hamlet is “Barralach”, meaning “over the lake”. Caragh lake is one of Ireland’s most beautiful, lying in a special area of conservation. Barralach enjoys spectacular views over the lake and up to the dramatic peaks of the Macgillycuddy Reeks or mountains. This secluded hamlet is nevertheless close to the hikers’ Kerry Way and only ten minutes from the shops and pubs of Glenbeigh village. Three of the cottages provide separate accommodation for the different elements of your party, with privacy and independence. The 14-seater dining table, however, and the great wood stoves in the very spacious Main Cottage bring the entire group joyfully together. Our guidebooks and maps ensure you make the most of your outings from Barralach. And if the weather turns inclement, the large assortment of wellington boots, raincoats and extensive collections of books, videos and games will keep you going. Immersed in nature, you will delight in Barralach’s mountain sheep, hares, rabbits, weasels, birds & magically ever-changing views, not to forget the cuckoo every April/May. You’ll love our crystalline deep-spring water. Our housekeeper may be available to provide excellent meals of the finest local fare "a la Barralach”.

BEDROOM LAYOUT OF BARRALACH COTTAGES.

Barralach is a small mountain hamlet, consisting of 4 cottages close together in the traditional Irish way. Three of these cottages, internally modernised, are available for occupation by visitors and provide accommodation for a maximum of 12 persons (11 adults and one infant), as follows:

The MAIN COTTAGE has one bedroom (upstairs) with a King size bed, 200 by 160 cm, described as “extremely comfortable”.
Beside the bedroom there is a full bathroom with bath, separate shower and
toilet.  This cottage also has a separate toilet downstairs, easily accessible to occupants of the other two cottages.  Also in this main cottage are kitchen, lounge and dining room, boot room, utility room, and two large wood stoves, for which there is unlimited free firewood, grown on our property, therefore carbon neutral.

The MIDDLE COTTAGE has two bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with two single beds.  It has a full bathroom with bath, separate shower and toilet.

The double bed in this cottage is also King Size, but its dimensions are 200 by 153 cm.  There is also a baby’s cot.

The LAKE COTTAGE has two bedrooms, one with two single beds of extra-large dimensions (200 by 90 cm). [If bound together, these two single beds may become a third double bed]. The other bedroom has a bunk bed set, also 200 by 90 cm, as well as a single bed. [As you will note this cottage can accommodate up to 5 persons]. This cottage also has a bathroom with shower and toilet, but no bath.

BEDDING SUMMARY. In normal configuration, the Barralach cottage complex offers two double beds, seven single beds and one baby’s cot. Thus there are beds for 11 adults and one infant.

WiFi is available in all of the cottages.

This layout permits you to allocate cottages to discrete groups of people or families.  At the same time, the entire group will want to come joyfully together in the Main cottage to enjoy the large social areas.

Fantastic getaway!

Incredible views and place to stay. Great for hiking and exploring. Very peaceful location and also nicely situated for day trips in the Kerry area. We hiked all the trails, jogged around the lake, swam in the lake, but mostly took in the breathtaking views.

Great cottages with amazing views -just beautiful!

We loved the Barralach cottages - the location is amazing - beautiful views, nice walks in the area, 10 minutes off the ring of Kerry. The cottages themselves are very nice & comfortable. This was a high point of our Ireland trip - and we hope to stay there again some day.

Beautiful spot!

We loved our time at the cottages. One of the most beautiful vacations spots we've been too. We were a big group but the cottages were a perfect set-up for us. Peter was extremely helpful and accommodating as a host. We'd highly recommend it!

Can a Place We've Only Visited Twice Be a Second Home?

Eight family members stayed here in 2015, and from the moment we arrive we knew we would have to come back. COVID interrupted our plans a couple of years ago, but this year we made our return visit, staying five nights this time. There were a dozen of us this time--my wife and I, two daughters and their spouses, a total of five grandkids, and a teenage granddaughter's boyfriend. From our previous visit, we knew to not over-plan our days. We bought groceries (a decent Aldi's in nearby Kil

Wonderful visit to cottages and beautiful view

Our party of 9 had an amazing visit to these cottages. The view is awe inspiring and we were sad to leave. We were able to access a trail from the rear of the property and the main cottage had chess/games and extra wellies/raincoats for rainy days. Wi-Fi worked great. We missed meeting Peter, but we did get to meet Betty and sample one of her delicious meals.

Wonderful stay at Barralach cottages

I stayed at the Barralach cottages with my family -- 7 adults in all -- and we all had a wonderful time. The property and views are absolutely gorgeous! The cottages are cozy while also providing plenty of space for a large group. The housekeeper was very helpful in coordinating our arrival and departure and Peter, the owner, sent information about the house and area ahead of time which was much appreciated. We loved staying up on the hill -- with the views of lakes and hills -- and enjoyed going out for dinner in Glenbeigh and other neighboring towns. There's plenty to do and see in the area! Thanks for everything -- we had a wonderful trip!

Exceptional location! Rough drive to get to property but worth the view. House was comfortable for a family with separate cottages. Having the sheep was so fun, but the sheep doo everywhere in the yard made it difficult to walk out to see the property. Betty cooked two meals and it was outstanding! Exceeded expectations!!

Perfect location!

Barralach was the perfect location for our vacation! The accommodations were great for our group of 7 and could have comfortably accommodated several more. We loved being "off the beaten path" and yet close enough to conveniences and lots of sightseeing. We especially enjoyed scenic drives along the Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula and our visit to Blarney Castle. We also got in some great hiking, including Carrauntoohil -- the tallest mountain in Ireland. Peter was most helpful and very nice to work with. Thanks for helping our experience in Ireland be such a memorable one!

Amazing beautiful

Driving up the road I knew it was going to be beautiful but the view was breath taking. We stayed 8 nights at the property and never wanted to leave. The view changed every day, the houses were always warm with plenty of firewood. Everything about the property made us feel at home. Our boys (4 and 7) and my nieces and nephew (5,7,9) had a ball playing outside everyday building bridges, chasing sheep, going on walks to explore and of cause playing in the mud!! We will look forward to the day we can come back and would highly recommend to young and old. Thank you Peter, our favourite place in Ireland.

Incredible Beautiful Views

Every morning I woke and first thing I did was look outside - The scenery would change, at times feeling like we were up in the clouds. The sheep, the scenery and the overall peacefulness of this perfect group of cottages leaves you feeling regenerated, especially after sightseeing during the day. My son was intrigued with climbing the hills behind the house. When we left we all wished that we could have stayed longer. If I have the chance I would love to return and I highly recommend.

Not sure if there is a better view in Ireland!

Peter's cottages at Baralach were the perfect fit for our family of eleven. Each couple/group had their own space with the main home providing wonderful general space for everyone to gather and eat. With that said, we were outside most of the time taking in the spectacular views - just sitting in the comfy chairs provided drinking wine and chatting. Couldn't have been better. The home was clean and well stocked to prepare meals. We used the grill a number of times. Peter couldn't have been more helpful or responsive to all of our many questions. Thanks for an amazing stay!

At Home at Barralach

The visitor comments found elsewhere on this site only mildly prepared us for the lovely Barralach. The charming stone cottages, comfortable, lovingly maintained and perched on a spectacular hillside, greeted us like old friends. The view forward to the valley and lakes and behind to the hilltop and sea beyond assured us that "here we are where we are meant to be". Detailed notes and a friendly call from the owner provided more than enough information for local area sightseeing and activities such as riding on the beach to hiking to dining out. Barralach is a wonderful and unique retreat for those exploring the Dingle and Kerry peninsulas as well as the Killarney National Park area. It is a very special home away from home that I would recommend to anyone who wanted to experience Ireland's essence.

Indescribable Location!

This property was just what our family needed to relax for a few days while exploring County Kerry. The beauty of the countryside view is indescribable and the company of the sweet friends outside was icing on the cake. The property is indeed "cabin-esque", but is very fitting for the property. We appreciate Ireland's focus on sustainability, however, had to take extra steps at this property to come up with our own sorting bins/bags and then find the local recycling source for disposal. While the host recommended a recycling location, it was in the opposite direction of our next stop, so we carried our trash with us for a bit. Not ideal with a car full of luggage. While there are a few things about the hamlet that could be enhanced, we would 100% stay here again!

Attractive and comfortable cottages in an outstandingly beautiful location

This was a perfect place to celebrate our wedding anniversary/birthday with all our family. The three cottages made ideal accommodation for ourselves, our son and daughter and their families, and we all appreciated the outstandingly beautiful views and walks from the cottages as well as the proximity to Glenbeigh and the amazing beach at Rossbeigh. The three cottages were very comfortable and the main cottage very well equipped. There was also the bonus of having Betty to cook for us on a couple of evenings. One family was rather concerned about their car’s low clearance on the final rather rough track to the cottage, but the rest of us coped well. Peter, the owner, was extremely helpful providing much useful information and answering questions immediately from the time of booking throughout our stay. Unfortunately, we can’t say the same for Vrbo who provided last minute information some of which was outdated regarding electricity. Peter confirmed there is no extra charge for electricity.

6 Nights at Barralach

Peter said words would not do the views from the house justice, and he was right - simply stunning. We were able to access different hiking options of varying difficulty directly from the property. The house and cottages were comfortable and very well equipped. We had not realized the bedroom space in the main house was not fully enclosed as a separate room, but it was fine nonetheless. An earlier reviewer recommended renting a small SUV for the stay, and I am glad I followed that advice as the driveway up to the house is by necessity steep and also a bit rough. Restaurants, shops and water activities were 20 minutes away by car. Peter and Eliza, the housekeeper, were readily accessible by phone. The dishwasher happened to break during our stay, and Eliza quickly facilitated a replacement. All in all, a unique and lovely property to which we would gladly return.

Unbelievable, Fantastic!

The views are breathtaking and the location is perfect for a stay in Kerry. While staying on the mountain you can easily imagine how it was in centuries past. The quiet, the air, watching the sheep dot the mountains, noticing how the clouds come in and fill the valleys, then clear out and again exposing the fantastic views. And then there's the Milky Way at night. I believe I haven't seen a darker sky with the stars and planets as bright since we were at Organ Pipe in Arizona 25 years ago. It would be hard to say which had better viewing. The cottages are beautiful, comfortable, clean, and have all the modern conveniences. The main cottage where everyone spent most of our time except for sleeping has breathtaking views from many of the rooms with large windows. All three cottages were very comfortable and just perfect. The village of Glenbeigh is a stones throw away with a great pub at the Glenbeigh Hotel. Gas and a small super-market are also in town.

Stunning view and Irish spirit

Very pleasant cottages, very well-equiped and very cosy atmosphere. Wonderful panorama, wildlife all around... The three cottages allow different groups of friends to keep their intimacy, and the large main cottage is fantastic for gathering at dinner time and spending evenings around the fireplace. Everything was clean and in good working condition. Peter, the owner is very caring and very receptive to visitors and always tries to make them feel at home, taking time to give a phone call to make sure everything is OK and giving wise tips to make the best possible holiday. There are many activities to do around : walking (the Kerry Way is really great!), riding, angling... Pubs and supermarkets are about 10 minutes away, the Dingle Peninsula is not far, and if the weather permits it, there are very lovely sand beaches ( Rossbeigh, Inch, Kells +++) where you can enjoy the pleasure of swimming in fresh but clear waters. Spending two weeks at Barralach makes you feel you are alone and far from everything but without any of the inconvienients induced by isolation. A great experience!

Gorgeous Holiday Escape

Our family stayed at the farm for a week and it was absolutely magical. We had four adults, two kids, and a toddler with us, and there was plenty of room for everyone to spread out with extra space. It is perfectly situated for adventuring around the Ring of Kerry - we were easily able to visit several of the nearby towns, all within an hours drive or less. The nearby town of Killorglin was very cute and accessible for groceries as well as some great restaurant recommendations by our host, Peter. Rossbeigh Strand, the nearby beach, was a beautiful and quiet little spot. The property itself was gorgeous and felt like being in a fairytale - three small cottages with sheep all around, and a green forest backdrop. The kitchen was fully equipped and the wood stove was lovely to sit by, even during our summer trip, while we watched the sheep just on the other side of the floor-to-ceiling windows that make up the main house. The kids loved the hike up the back hill behind the cottages that offered the most amazing views we had ever seen - a panoramic dream of mountains, the bay, lakes, and hills all captured in one quick hike. Peter was a wonderful host and was readily available whenever we needed. He was kind and friendly and had great recommendations. We would recommend staying here to anyone, and hope to be back someday.

Barralach Cottages 10/1 - 10/13/2018

Our stay at Barralach was AWESOME! I had read many great reviews from previous visitors and we had high expectations. We were not Disappointed. The Cottages were clean and comfortable. The Main Cottage with the kitchen, dining, laundry and living areas was well appointed with everything we could possibly need, even boots and foul weather clothing. The living area with wood stove was our place to gather after hiking or on our return from day trips. There was an extensive collection of eclectic reading materials, from Irish history and geology to maps and travel information, plus much, much more. But the scenery from the house and property was just incredible. You will have commanding views of local mountains, Dingle Peninsula and the Curragh Lake estuary. The Kerry Way hiking trail is nearby and allows for even novice hikers to enjoy the moderate trail to Glenbeigh. Last of all were the sheep that came and went at will, entertaining us with there antics. Dooks golf course is very close by and was a great challenge. We highly recommend this rental to anyone wishing to explore the splendor of Southwest Ireland.

Beautiful views with rustic charm

We stayed in this property as a family with eight people aged 2 months to 62 years old. First the pros: The property is in an idyllic setting with magnificent views overlooking the hills and lake, and we saw the most beautiful rainbows nearly every day. It was fun to see the sheep and lambs grazing just outside the windows. The main cottage had comfortable furnishings, and the kitchen was well stocked. The main cottage also had a nice communal space for family dinners as well as for relaxing and enjoying the view together. It was also nice to have 3 separate cottages. This worked well for our extended family. Also, Peter was very responsive and easy to work with. The cons: The cottages were somewhat musty. Several family members with mold allergies had issues with this. The lake cottage was buggy - there were water bugs on the floor and a slug in one of the beds. There were also many, many flies buzzing around in the main cottage when we first arrived. It took us a few days to finally eradicate all of them. This was likely an anomaly due to the recent long drought though. Finally, with sheep comes sheep poop. We had to step very carefully to avoid it. These negatives aside, overall we really enjoyed our stay.
