About this property

Serbian Village Farmhouse

The house has 3 bedrooms, reception room, kitchen/dining room, sun-room, hallway and 2 bathrooms. The bedrooms sleep 6 (one double bedroom and two twin bedrooms). In addition there is a sofa bed and a cot for infants. There is cable TV, ethernet, and wifi throughout the house and most of the garden.

Stara Moravica is a traditional Vojvodina village. The population is about 5,000. The streets are wide and lined with plum trees and most houses are, like ours, in the Austro-hungarian style with spacious rooms, thick walls, high ceilings, large gardens, and substantial land attached. Our land is arranged as a garden with outdoor dining and BBQ, a large grassed farmyard, and an orchard with over 30 plum trees. The farmyard has lots of space for kids (or dogs), including a swing set and old farm buildings. It is securely fenced. It is an easy walk to village shops and amenities. Many local people are expert producers of food and drink. You can easily buy honey, cheese, goats milk, bread, wine and of course rakija. The land around is flat and agricultural, and beautiful for cycling or running, whether along farm tracks, quiet roads, or the course of a disused railway which extends 30km all the way to Subotica. There is a lake in the village, over 2km in length. We provide bicycles (6) and a 4.5m canoe. A neighbour has a horse and cart and offers tours, as well as transport of the canoe to the lake. There are many opportunities for swimming, including a 12m pool in the village (700m from the house), a 23m pool in Bajmok (12km), a 20m iodine-rich hot water thermal pool in Pacir (4km), and lake swimming with water slides etc in Backa Topola (15km). There is a 50m outdoor pool in Kljajićevo, 30km from the house.

The kitchen is well equipped, and as well as the standard BBQ equipment we provide a Kotlic in case you want to try traditional Hungarian paprikash cooking.

The village centre is a few hundred metres from the house. There you will find two supermarkets, butchers, hardware stores, the ubiquitous "Chinese Shops", two pharamcies, two bakeries, ice-cream parlour, news kiosk, money-exchange, internet cafe, and various other amenities. Within a kilometer of the house you will find three bars, a very good take-away serving traditional Vojvodina meat dishes and pizzas, two burger take-aways, and a restaurant. Within the village there is also a children's playground, horse-riding, and bowling alley.

Backa Topola has two good restaurants, Subotica has many good restaurants. There are several good fish Carda restaurants along the Danube. We provide a house book of over 20 pages, covering practical information about the house, a guide to the village, and to sights and restaurants in the surrounding towns.

It is easy to make day-trips to Subotica, Palic, Sombor, Novi Sad, Sremski Karlovci, Apatin, and Szeged (in Hungary).

Perfektes Ambiente!

About the host

When not in Serbia we live and work between Windsor, England, and Dublin, Ireland. Over the past decade we have holidayed extensively in central and eastern Europe, including several trips to former Yugoslavia. We stayed in this property as paying guests in 2011. It was then owned and rented by a British couple who had spent several years in Serbia before returning to England. Among many other accomplishments they completely restored this property. Having returned to England, they were ready to sell and were waiting to find buyers who would continue their commitment to Stara Moravica. That turned out to be us. It is the only holiday property we own and we would likely never have owned one if they had not asked us. We have maintained and improved the house and its visibility on the web. We are proud that the investments we have made, and the money that our guests spend, make some small contribution to the economic life of the village and help in a small way to promote knowledge and appreciation of Vojvodina and the rest of Serbia.

Why they chose this property

This area does not get many tourists but those that come invariably wish they could stay longer, having quickly developed a strong appreciation of the people, the architecture, the pace of life, and the food and wine of the village, just as we did back in 2011. There is a lot to do only it is not well-publicised. We provide guests a comprehensive House Book to try to make everything as accessible to visitors as it can be.

The house is spacious and comfortable, and together with the garden it provides a sense of space and relaxation and retreat that will appeal to almost anyone who spends most of the year in an urban environment and wants a change of scene. Whenever it is warm enough to sit outside, you may want to do little more than sit at the table or hang a hammock (provided) between two trees in the farmyard. If you want to explore, you can do a lot on foot or on one of the bicycles (provided). If you have a car, the art-deco cities of Subotica, Szeged and Sombor are all well-worth a visit, and not only for their architecture.

What makes this property unique

This review by guests in May 2014 sums it up:
"Relaxing and energizing! Staying in Stara Moravica was a unique, authentic experience. The house is clean, comfortable and functional; everything we needed was there. House manager was always there to answer all our questions, and help us with our food orders. Local wine, honey and cheese purveyors are highly enthusiastic about their work. They still do their craft the way it was done many decades ago. Stara Moravica is a true gem. Food and wine we ordered through the House Book were amazing. All the people we met were extremely friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Village is lined with indigenous fruit trees. Better than advertised, we are looking forward to be back."
