Lovely for our July visit and only 30 min. From Limestone where we dropped off grandson for a wee’s summer camp at Maine School of Math and Science :) This is a very clean & well-stocked, rural country location on Rt.161 about 15 miles north of downtown Caribou with its variety of restaurants, stores, and a lovely public library. A 10-15 min. walk uphill behind the house offers hilltop view of Madawaska Lake :)Just a 5 minute drive away north and south are the 1800s Swedish colony historical museums in towns of Stockholm and New Sweden (hours open posted on front doors) and interesting early settlers’ cemeteries. Fort Fairfield’s Potato Blossom Festival offered daily events and one road there, along the Aroostook River, offers picnic tables, camping, and access to put in boats. We also spent a day meeting with a fellow educator at UM Presque Isle, just an hour ‘a drive. Lovely agricultural farms and fields and well-kept homes throughout this county make it well worth the drive and exploring the “ back roads.” A must stop heading South below Houlton are the Amish Pioneer Store, Farm Market, wood- fired pizza, and “just churned” ice cream in Smyrna Mills, just 1 mile off I-95!
