My husband Ryan and I enjoy living like locals when we travel and renovated an 1892 brick cottage in downtown Cape Girardeau. I have a background in the tourism industry in my hometown and currently work at a local non-profit organization.

Why they chose this property

The Cottage at the Market was considered "demolition by neglect" - it needed us! Built in 1892 as a single-family home, the Cottage at the Market is a Cabeled Ell Cottage built in the German Vernacular style. The home was built by Joseph Lansman for the John F. Vogelsanger family, the owner of Vogelsanger Hardware in 1892. In 1899, the home was given to Vogelsanger's daughter, who married and took the name Christiansen. The Christiansen family added dormers and the front porch. This home was the fourth home built on South Lorimier Street and is next door to another brick home also attributed to Lansman.

Joseph Lansman was the most well-known architect and builder in Southeast Missouri in the 19th century, and he built many other historically noted and preserved properties, such as the Burdfordville Covered Bridge, St. Vincent's College (now SEMO's River Campus), the Common Pleas Courthouse and the Reynolds House.

The Cottage at the Market was divided into 2 apartments in 1942-1943 and was further divided into three total units in the 1970s; the home was vacated in the mid-1990s and officially condemned in 1998, and featured on the City of Cape Girardeau's Historic Preservation Commission's Most Endangered List from 2015-2018. The Lane and Huxel families purchased the property in late 2018 and spent 18 months restoring it to a single-family home. As of May 2020, the Cottage at the Market is a fully restored single-family home ready to welcome guests.

What makes this property unique

Gather with your entire family in this fully equipped home, with a wide-open kitchen, living and dining room ideal for entertaining. Steps away from everything historic downtown Cape Girardeau has to offer, including local dining and shopping, historic sites and the Mighty Mississippi, this brick home with tons of natural light on a shady, tree-lined street is ready to welcome your family.

We have exterior security cameras at the front and back doors; these are only used to make sure our guests are able to check in safely (we always worry about you if you're getting in late, and these give us peace of mind that you made it in without having to bother you!). No recorded data is saved from these cameras, and per VRBO's policies there are absolutely no recording devices inside the home.
