The Ohiwa Gem

A small and pleasantly basic kiwi bach. 36 square meters in a private beach estuary environment.

The perfect winter`s hide-a-way to recharge body and mind. And for the summer simply brilliant!

Very peaceful and quiet location right on the edge of Ohiwa Harbour close to the main channel. Fishing, shell fish, kayaking, surf beach, bush walks, sailing, kite surfing, glow worms and more all at your door step, everything you could ask for in a tranquil beach side location. Further enhanced by the ever changing moods of the tidal harbour lapping at the property boundary. Watch the bird life come and go, feeding with the changing tides.

A compact one room bach with seperate bathroom, fully equipped kitchen including dishwasher, sleeping is upstairs on the mezzanine floor.

The mezzanine floor is accessed by a ladder staircase (check photos to confirm this set up will work for your group) and contains a Double bed and two single beds (one rolls under the other when not in use). This area has a very low ceiling height due to the steep roof pitch. Approx 1.6 meters at top of ladder up to 2 meters at the window.

The large wrap-around deck with table and chairs provides for outdoor living with relaxation the name of the game.

This bach is no beach holiday palace but is a cosy comfortable dwelling set in a beautiful natural environment.

25min drive from Ohope, 30min drive from Whakatane.

10min drive from Opotiki where there is a very good New World supermarket for all your supplies.

It's a great old school batch. It has everything you need as a base of operations. There is nothing to do but enjoy the beach and bush. It was the best break from the rat race.Got to check out the glow worms!

It was lovely to sit on the deck at dusk watching the variety of native seabirds and bushbirds dine before nightfall and hear their birdsong slowly deminish. The colours of the estuary with sunset were again beautiful with the lowering of tide. Loved it.

This little bach right on the estuary is amazing. It's well equipped and comfortable. The location is incredible. The ever changing beautiful estuary to the front and the magnificent Ohiwa Beach behind. Quiet, peaceful, friendly neighbourhood. Great place.

Such a beautiful place to escape to, bay on one side, beach on the other. All essentials at the Bach just bring your kai. Definately recommend and would book again! Great communication with the owners and easy access.

Cannot say enough. Exactly what we needed. On one side estuary, like glass for early morning kayak, then round the corner to the ocean, for surf casting and snapper!! Wines on the deck while hubby on BBQ, absolutely magical!

Quiet get away from the hussle n Bussle of the city

Great location, beaches awesome .. could walk to the beach or drive to others close by .. loved being able to pull the kayaks available with the property to the beginning of the harbour at the bottom of the garden .. we did this each day.. close to Ohopie.. liked Opotiki .. just a great holiday .. only negative was there was really no comfy chair to sit on .. lots of chairs tho lol

Great place. Problems my friend and I encountered were: No light bulb over single bed upstairs. Gisborne cockroach found ? Need to spray? Couldn’t get TV to go. Clearer instructions needed. Also heater- couldn’t work out how to start it - need clearer instructions. We couldn’t get vac.cleaner out of seat area so swept thoroughly Also from health and safety perspective, vaccine upstairs is a potential high risk for injury. BUT WE REALLY ENJOYED IT!

Wonderfully understated gem

We had an enjoyable stay, great ever-changing view over the harbour, all sorts of birds flying, wading, or strutting about.Very quiet location with little traffic. Great walks around the sand split and out to the ocean beach, fabulous views from the Pa site tracks.The bach is well appointed and compact, getting up to bed on mezzanine was not too difficult even tho we are both in our 60's.Host very friendly and helpful.Overall a great place to stay in a great place to visit.Note we stayed early winter & outside of any school or other holiday time but did have a weekend mid stay, peak activity was 2-3 motorbikes or a car in an hour
