Just ten minutes drive from the centre of Invercargill, our crib is a cosy 1930’s cottage with beachside charm, part of a small settlement nestled in the sandhills of Oreti Beach on Foveaux Strait. The simple sprit of the NZ bach is here. Disconnect from all your electronic media ties and relax properly here! City convenience is close, yet the atmosphere is quiet and isolated. A view of bushy Stewart island and sandhills graces the kitchen and the sound of the surf will whoosh you off to sleep at night.
Our bach is a spot where you can have an uncomplicated summer holiday, a decent digital detox and get away from it all. No TV, no telephone, no internet 😊.
A short walk through the sand hills takes you right on to the beach, broadening to a huge expanse of sand at low tide, stretching for miles around to Riverton. Great to mountain bike, just walk, watch the seabirds and beachcomb. The surf is enjoyed by surfers, swimmers, paddlers, kite boarders and windsurfers. Otatara cafes and bars (Ziffs and The Cabbage Tree) are handy, as is Otatara Golf Course and Otatara bush walks / estuary walks.
The Bluff Oyster festival in May offers great food and music, or try the Burt Munro Challenge (summer) for unique motorbike races of all kinds . If you're in travel mode, the Coronet Peak and Remarkables skifields, lakes, adventure activities and stunning scenery of Fiordland National Park, Te Anau and Queenstown are only 2 hours drive away, flights to beautiful Rakiura / Stewart Island leave from the local airport and you are right on the "Southern Scenic Route" if touring the lovely South Coast and Catlins. Less energetically, you might just prefer to watch the sun set into the ocean from the plank seat on the sandhill or relax by the woodburner with an indulgent drink and a good book!
