Protea Park Cottage - Cosy, warm and ever so quiet
PLEASE NOTE: THERE IS ONLY ONE BEDROOM. IT SLEEPS TWO IN A QUEEN BED. THERE IS NO SOFA BED OR FUTON. I CANNOT CHANGE THE INFORMATION ON THE WEBSITE. You don't have to drive far off SH1 to find us but you'll be amazed at the beautiful and quiet location. It's a great place to relax with the nice hot shower and comfortable bed, perfect for a good night's sleep. An easy drive to Cape Reinga at the top of New Zealand and close to Ninety Mile Beach, Protea Park Cottage is situated on our 30 acre farm where King Proteas are grown for the export market. Overlooking a picturesque pond, the cute and cosy cottage is a quiet haven with its sheltered deck allowing all weather cooking on the BBQ. The large fridge/freezer and well equipped kitchen make meal preparation easy and it's a short drive to local restaurants for sit down service or takeaways. Rabbits, hares, pheasants, wild turkeys, quail and other creatures roam with the horses among the protea adding to the experience of kiwi rural life. A short drive takes you to either magnificent white sand east coast beaches or 90 Mile Beach on the dramatic west coast. If you venture into the forest around dusk or dawn it’s very likely you will spot a herd of wild horses. For the keen fisherman or golfer – wow!! It’s all here in the far north, come and see. Fish prep and hose down area on site. Ample parking for boats, trailers, horse floats, cars etc. It's nice to just walk around the property, always something interesting to see. The pond is home to several ducks with a few wild ones popping in to visit each day and it's just a short walk across a bridge to the back of the farm where the horses usually live. You can walk among the King Protea to the highest point of the farm from where you will be able to see the Houhora Harbour. The woodburner and endless supply of firewood ensure you a cosy stay if you visit in winter and fans will keep you cool in summer. Look forward to seeing you soon :) Special conditions: Two night minimum applies for public holidays.

We really enjoyed hosting Deidre and Richard.
They were lovely guests and they left our little place spotlessly clean.
We hope to have them stay again one day and we recommend them to future hosts.
We very much enjoyed our two nights at the Protea Farm: A big apartment with everything we needed. The property is huge, well maintained, with lots of protea plants, beautiful trees, bushes, a pond, horses, dogs….Polly is a very lovely and attentive host.
off the main road but once there really great location.
I would be happy to stay here any time in the future and would recommend it to friends and relatives. Clean, quiet comfortable and peaceful. The proprietor could not have been more helpful.
After a full day on a fishing charter this place offered an amazing peaceful surrounding to relax. The Hosts greeted us with a very warm welcome. Highly recommend.
A beautiful cottage with a beautiful lady Polly & Geoff to host. The animals were awesome. Would like to stay longer next time. Also the locals were great. Felt most welcome.

Relaxing and peaceful
Great place with plenty of room and things to do. The owners next door have 3 nice dogs that love attention. You can walk all across the property with some friendly dog companions following. Lovely lake as a backdrop to the property as well. Overall a wonderful place to stay.

It was wonderful to host this lovely couple. They were very nice to talk with and interested in our little farm.
They left our cottage clean and tidy and we are very happy to recommend them to future hosts.
We loved being on a rural property with dogs and horses. We were intrigued with the floral business run there. Being so close to both East and West coast beaches is very special and we made trips to both.
The property is very well set up with everything culinary-wise you could possibly need, the fireplace quickly pumping out warmth, and the bed very comfortable.
We will come back some time.
Polly gave us a lovely warm welcome.
The accommodation was spacious and with everything you could wish for for a mini getaway.
Our first night we came home to a toastie home with the woodburner having been lit.
Hosts Polly and Geoff had the perfect balance with privacy and presence. The beautiful Proteas were shared too which we took to our friends Thankyou

I rarely write such extravagant reviews, but Protea Park Cottage and host Polly are truly special. This is one of the very best places I have ever stayed, in any country. The cottage is on several acres of land, next to Polly’s and husband Geoffrey’s house. The property is beautiful, and I got to know all three of their dogs – Ted, Dora, and Scout – each one free to roam and each one friendlier and more affectionate than the other. Polly’s 32-year-old mare, Sjayn, was also a sweetheart. The cottage itself was spacious, spotless, and equipped with everything anyone could need. And Polly was a warm, friendly, helpful, amazing host, bringing me home-grown fruit and inviting me to join her and Geoffrey and three of their friend couples for a lovely evening picnic by the sea. The cottage is also just a one-hour drive, along a well-paved road, to Cape Reinga. I can’t say enough about Polly, the cottage, the grounds, or the location. Simply a picture-perfect stay.

The perfect place to get away from it all and relax
I stayed for 3 nights with my teenage daughter and enjoyed every minute. The cottage was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed. We loved having doggo visitors and seeing the horses wandering around doing their thing. Walking around the property we were able to see the stunning flowers along with busy fan tails. Polly and Geoff and perfect hosts. Highly recommended!
Lovely cosy property with all facilities plus bonus menagerie of dogs, horses, cats. Perfect for a relaxing few days at the local beaches and cultural attractions. Owners are great, chatty and friendly.
