About this property

Peaceful and cosy off-grid nature hideaway, South Wairarapa

Located at Tora in the South Wairarapa - 5 minute drive from the rugged Tora coast, a scenic 35 min drive from Martinborough and 2 hour drive from Wellington city. Set in a secluded and peaceful spot the Cottage ensures you privacy while not too far off the beaten track. With touches of recycled timber, unique decor and natural textiles, the Cottage has a warm rustic, whimsical vibe.
Built from recycled materials, the cosy cottage has an open kitchen-living area, one private bedroom and inside bathroom with flushing toilet.
Leather sofas, feather cushions, wool throws and a wood burner come together to create a charming, snug and relaxing space.
The comfy queen size bed is dressed with quality linen and thick blinds for a shamelessly long sleep in.
Double french doors lead onto a long deck. Take a seat soaking in the sounds from the regenerating ngāhere (bush) while watching the sun set over the rolling farmland in the distance.
After dark, snuggle up on the porch and stargaze up at the expansive South Wairarapa Dark Sky reserve. The starry sky at night is stunning.
Te kai te me inu - eating and drinking:
Longspur Eco Cottage is self-catering. Bring your own food and drink, and cook using the Weber BBQ or gas cook top/oven. You’ll find all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans that you’ll need - from coffee plunger to paua mincer.
If you're an active relaxer there's plenty to do.
Highly recommended is the 5km bush walk up to the Rocky Knob - 318 mtrs above sea level to where you'll feel most alive. The views are breathtaking.
Bush Bathing - sorry no hot tub involved but a quiet meander in the bush alone can do a world of good for our mental health and well-being. Listen, observe, smell, breath, feel. Tonic for the soul.
Challenge your mate over a board game or browse through the eclectic selection of books.
Longspur is a truly restful place. You’ll feel this the first time you drive up the track to the Cottage – a hidden treasure that forces you to take a deep breath and just... relax.

About the host

Hosted by Tineke McNeil

Host profile image
Tineke and Stew are your hosts along with their grown children Cole, Flyn & Pippa.
Stew is an Agri-contractor while Tineke 3rd generation to call Tora home.
Stew has spent much of his life commercial fishing along the Tora coast. Tineke grew up between Masterton and a family bach on the property Te Oroi at Tora, a ballot farm her Grandfather attained from the Government in the early 1950's when he returned from WW2.
We enjoy offering our guests a different experience, to help them escape their busy lives and reconnect with themselves and each other.

Why they chose this property

We’re strongly passionate about our responsibility in preserving and helping the ngàhere (native bush) grow for future generations. Our most recent project is establishing a predator trapping programme throughout the property which we record on Trap.NZ. Presently we have 75 (Stew-made) boxed traps set to control rats and mustelids, working towards our property eventually being predator free.

What makes this property unique

Named back when the property was part of Tora Station for the great long spur which runs along the top of the back boundary from the Rocky Knob down to GreenTops end and further.
We think that Longspur is a pretty special place – and delight in sharing it with guests.
