About this property

The Coasty Bach | Cosy Cottage + Optional Cabin

Every stay is thoughtfully prepared before you even reach the front door.

The Coasty Bach is your soft landing.

Whether you've travelled across the country or just down the road, you can settle in from the moment you walk through the door.

Nestled in Tolaga Bay on New Zealand's beautiful East Coast is this cosy three-bedroom cottage.

Life here is best enjoyed with slow mornings, hot coffee, shared meals, cards around the table, stories by the fire and cosy nights in.

Need a little more space? A separate cabin with one double bed and one king single is available by request for larger groups.

Come for the adventure. Come for family. Come for work. Come because life had other plans.

However you found your way here, we're glad you made it. 💛

🧾 The Good Stuff

If you're heading to the Coast for mahi, tangi, a family visit, or simply need a breather, this coasty bach is a warm, comfortable place to land and recharge.

Tucked away in a quiet part of Tolaga Bay, it's clean, relaxed and easy to settle into. This is a genuine 1970s bach that's been thoughtfully prepared with everything you need for an easy, comfortable stay while keeping the relaxed character that makes it feel like a true East Coast getaway.

🌞 Free WiFi
🍿 Free Netflix
❄️ Air conditioning in the main house
🌻 Fully fenced section
🍳 Well-equipped kitchen
🚿 Strong, reliable hot shower
🅿️ Plenty of off-street parking

🛏️ Sleeping

The main cottage sleeps up to 6 guests across three bedrooms.

Travelling with a larger group? A separate cabin is available by request and sleeps up to 3 additional guests with one double bed and one king single. Cabin access is available for an additional $50 cleaning fee, plus the standard additional guest fee. Please message before booking if you'd like to include the cabin.

The cottage itself is compact, making it best suited to guests who enjoy cosy, close-quarter living rather than wide-open spaces.

🏠 The Space

Whether you're here for work, visiting whānau, attending a tangi or simply taking a break, this is a comfortable place to land.

It stays cool in summer, warm in winter, and has everything you need to settle in and switch off. Perfect for workers, whānau stays, quiet weekends away, or anyone needing a slower pace for a few days.

🛋️ Lounge

After a long day, the lounge is a comfortable place to unwind.

• Large comfy couch
• Two La-Z-Boy recliners
• Smart TV with free Netflix
• Fireplace
• Air conditioning

🍳 Kitchen & Dining

Whether you're cooking a full meal or just heating up takeaways, you'll find everything you need.

🛁 Bathroom & Laundry

The shower shares the laundry (or maybe the laundry shares the shower, depending how you look at it).

One thing guests regularly comment on is the water pressure. It's hot, reliable and perfect for washing the day away.

You'll find:

• Shampoo
• Conditioner
• Body wash

Laundry facilities include:

• Washing machine
• Laundry powder
• Dryer
• Outdoor clothesline

🛏️ Bedrooms
Bedroom One

• Two king single beds

Bedroom Two

• Queen bed
• Desk and chair

Bedroom Three

• Double bed

🏡 Separate Cabin

Available by request, the separate cabin is ideal for larger groups or guests wanting a little extra privacy.

It includes:

• One double bed
• One king single bed
• Dresser
• Fully insulated
• Double glazed

🏡 Warm & Comfortable

The lounge is heated by a heat pump, while the bedrooms have automatic panel heaters during the cooler months.

Electric blankets are provided in winter, with extra blankets and pillows available if you'd like them.

🌿 Good to Know

This is an older bach with plenty of character, so you may notice the odd creak as it continues to be lovingly updated over time.

The water pressure pump sits outside near Bedroom Three and may switch on occasionally.

Because you're staying in rural Tolaga Bay, you may hear roosters, cows or horses from time to time.

Power cuts are uncommon but can occasionally happen on the Coast. Candles are provided just in case.

🏡 Security Cameras

Exterior security cameras are installed for the safety of our guests and the security of the property. They monitor the driveway and entrances only.

There are no cameras inside the house or cabin, or in any private guest areas.

🐴 About Us

We're a busy equestrian family and spend many weekends away competing between November and Easter.

Because of this, some weekends require a two-night minimum stay.

If you're looking for a one-night stay, send us a message. If we can make it work, we'll always do our best.

🧺 Optional Extras

Available on request:

• Separate cabin access (sleeps up to 3 additional guests)
• Mid-stay linen and towel refresh – $50
• Mid-stay full house refresh – $100
• Firewood delivery – $20 per night

Cabin access incurs a $50 cleaning fee plus the standard additional guest fee.

📍 Tolaga Bay

Tolaga Bay is a small East Coast community where life moves a little slower.

You'll find:

• Gas station
• Truck stop
• Food truck
• Two dairies
• Pub
• Bottle store
• Fish and chip shops
• Lotto

Many guests choose to stock up on groceries in Gisborne before arriving.

What Tolaga Bay lacks in shopping, it makes up for with space, fresh sea air, friendly locals and the chance to slow down for a while.

Ngā mihi for the stay. Due to poor weather we arrived in Tolaga later than expected, and it was very welcoming to have the lights on for our arrival. The rooms were lovely, well laid out, and made for a comfortable stay.

Kia ora! My family and I live on a rural lifestyle block on the East Coast, making the most of life with our three kids, plenty of cats, dogs, and horses, and a love for the outdoors.

Why they chose this property

We’re local to the Coast and this is home for us.

We’ve built our life here around family, horses, and the slower pace that comes with living rural. Tolaga Bay isn’t busy or overdeveloped, and that’s exactly why we love it. It’s quiet, open, and gives you space to breathe.

We wanted to share a place that reflects that. Somewhere simple, comfortable, and welcoming for people coming through for mahi, tangi, or just needing a bit of time out.

What makes this property unique

What makes this place unique is how real and easy it feels.

It’s not a polished show home. It’s a warm, comfortable bach set up for actual living. A place where you can arrive, settle in, and feel at ease straight away.

It works well for the kinds of stays people actually need. Mahi trips, tangi, whānau time, or just a quiet reset. There’s space to gather, a fully fenced section for kids, and enough flexibility to sleep larger groups without overcomplicating things.

The separate cabin is a bonus too. It gives extra room and a bit of breathing space when you need it, while still keeping everyone close.

It’s simple, honest, and reliable. A good place to land at the end of the day.
