About the host
Hosted by Mark Nickerson
As co-host I very much enjoy and take pride in sharing this property with others. This area of Nova Scotia is a hidden gem, and until recently there were very few newcomers or visitors - the secret of the beauty of the area is getting out there! As host, I take pride in and look forward to making every guest's stay as comfortable as possible. Also, for those interested in exploring the area and seeing it through the eyes of a local, I love to share the spots that are my favourites and provide contacts to those who want to more deeply explore the history and beauty of the area.
Why they chose this property
I grew up less than a km from this house so it is very dear to me. As a child I went sledding on the hill (driveway) that leads down to the house. Most of the people who live here follow in the footsteps of their previous generations, living on the coast and participating in some form in the fishing industry. They are a close and friendly community and many enjoy sharing a "yarn" about the local area.
What makes this property unique
Stoddard Cottage has an incredible history. I will share a snippet, but if you're a history buff more can be learned during your stay! The house is 1/3 of a house that was once located on Stoddard Island. The house was brought, in three pieces, to three separate locations locally about 100 years ago. Stoddard Island had a fishing fleet and a history of rum-running.
The house is not modern and will receive more updating, but the plan is make the home comfortable while maintaining its wonderful character. The view is breathtaking and the location is quiet and peaceful.
