About this property

Architect-Designed Private Alpine Timber Lodge

Welcome to the Serenity Retreat – an architecturally designed sanctuary tucked away in the historic village of St Bathans, Central Otago.

For privacy and security reasons, we’ve kept the public listing photos limited. However, we're more than happy to share additional images of the interior, including the lounge and bedrooms, once an enquiry is made. We’re also happy to answer any questions to ensure the property is the right fit for your stay.

Completed in 2025 and perched at 600 metres altitude, this brand-new home blends timeless natural materials with refined architectural design and spectacular mountain views. Set in one of New Zealand’s most iconic gold-mining villages — just 40 minutes from Alexandra — The Serenity Retreat offers a peaceful, elevated escape surrounded by history, open landscapes, and the dramatic beauty of Central Otago. Depending on the season, the nearby peaks may be snow-capped, adding a stunning contrast to the dry Central landscape. You can hear a pin drop — no noise pollution, no light spill — just pure silence, nature, and unforgettable star-filled skies.

Built almost entirely from Macrocapa timber, the home showcases rich wood grain, polished concrete floors, and striking copper and brass accents throughout. Inside, you’ll find cathedral ceilings, shifting natural light throughout the day, and underfloor heating for year-round comfort. All rooms — including the fully equipped luxury kitchen — offer expansive views of the mountains and surrounding environment.

At the heart of the home is a grand open fireplace, perfect for long, slow evenings. Whether curled up with a book or sipping local wine, the warmth and stillness set the tone for true relaxation.

Step outside into the private courtyard to unwind beneath the stars. Soak in the alfresco bath or outdoor shower, enjoy the outdoor fire, or sit by the tranquil water fountain as you gaze across to the Hawkdun Ranges and St Bathans Mountain, one of the highest peaks in the region at over 2,000 metres.

Just a 5-minute walk down the lane is the iconic St Bathans Pub (Vulcan Hotel) — a heritage gem now under new ownership, offering amazing meals (4+ stars on Google), local wines, takeaways, and cold Central Otago beer. You’re also just minutes from the Blue Lake, historic mining tracks, and local walking trails that reveal the fascinating past of this remote, character-filled village.

Whether you’re looking for a fast recharge, a romantic retreat, or a place to reconnect with nature, The Serenity Retreat offers it all. Hear the fire crackle, soak under the stars, and embrace the peace of one of Central Otago’s best-kept secrets.
