About this property

Mica Cabin | Remote Off-grid Lakefront Retreat

Mica Cabin is an off-grid retreat on Rideau Valley Conservation land in Tay Valley, Eastern Ontario. Overlooking a quiet, protected lake, it sits in its own secluded inlet while sharing the lake with Rhya Cabin, 400 meters away. Thoughtfully positioned for privacy, both cabins are hidden among the trees. Enjoy sunset views from your deck, scenic hiking trails, birdwatching, and pristine paddling on Mills Lake.

BE AWARE
This remote cabin is on public conservation land—you may encounter hikers or visitors on the trails and lake.

This cabin shares the lake with our Rhya cabin (400 metres away), so other guests may be visible on the water.

Access requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle in summer and fall. Guests are responsible for their own safety and should have basic wilderness skills and comfort being alone in nature.

This cabin has a wild shoreline. For deep swimming, you’ll need to paddle to our swimming dock in the middle of the lake.

WATER
Our water is pumped from the lake. Running water is shut off when temperatures dip below freezing. This normally happens mid-October but can vary each year.  When running water is shut off, we provide 40L of water for dish washing and drinking. All taps (including shower taps) are turned off. Water is turned back on before the May Long Weekend.

DRIVE-IN /HIKE-IN ACCESS
Drive-in Access (4WD Required): Mid-May to Mid-November
Hike-in Access: Mid-November to Mid-May (900m from parking area)
We provide snowshoes and a sled for gear—embrace the adventure!
*Please be aware our pathway to the cabin is on rugged, meandering terrain through the forest. It can get rutty depending on weather conditions (especially after heavy rainfall in Spring).

THINGS TO BRING
* Your own food & drink
* Your own towels, sheets, pillows, pillow cases and blankets
* Firewood
* Bug repellent

OFF-GRID BASICS
This eco-cabin is completely OFF-GRID. (Don’t let this scare you). Our cabin is modernized and solar powered with electricity and heat. Feel good knowing that you’re choosing a low-carbon, eco-friendly getaway. As an off-grid cabin, energy conservation is key. Drawing too much energy may cause you to lose power, so you’ll need to be mindful of your consumption during your stay. There is a back-up generator when solar power is low.

LEAVE NO TRACE
All garbage and recycling must be packed up and taken home on your departure.

Here you’ll find anything you might need: groceries, LCBO, cafes, restaurants, pubs, Saturday farmers’ markets, galleries, concerts, and festivals. Visit Murphy’s Point Provincial Park (an 8-minute drive) for trails, a public beach, and tours of Silver Queen Mine (an early 1900s mica mine that plunges 20 metres deep to a subterranean tunnel of jagged, glistening mica minerals).
