#About the house

Takenoya was my grandparents’ home.
It was built about 80 years ago, when Osaka was recovering from the war.
This is not a modern house designed to look traditional.
It was an actual family home.

Some of its original character remains:

* Wooden pillars and beams
* Fusuma sliding doors
* Shoji screens
* Ranma transoms
* Old glass doors
* Earthen walls
* Tatami mats
* Traditional furniture and family heirlooms

The house has been renovated for modern guests, but we have preserved these older elements wherever possible.

So you get the best of both worlds:

* A modern kitchen, bathroom, air conditioning, and comfortable beds—combined with an old wooden structure, tatami mats, and traditional details.*

# What it’s like to stay here

There is no hotel lobby.
No other guests share the house.
You simply have the house to yourselves.

The tiled roof and traditional exterior have remained largely unchanged for about 80 years. Open the old sliding door and you’ll be greeted by the natural scent of wood and tatami. Sit back on the tatami, watch the sunlight stream through the windows, and slow down for a while. Here, you can experience the simple pleasure of staying in a Japanese home from another era—something a hotel simply can’t offer.

Start your morning with a walk along the river at Sakuranomiya Park. Spend the day exploring Osaka Castle or the Fujita Museum, then head to Kyobashi in the evening to get a taste of local Osaka. At the end of the day, return to the quiet Takenoya.

Rest in a house steeped in its own history, let the day’s fatigue melt away, and sleep soundly in a modern bed.

This is one way to experience Osaka—with the city to explore during the day and a quiet, old Japanese home to return to at night.

For a few days, this old family home becomes **your home in Osaka.**

#Best suited for

Takenoya is ideal for couples, families, and small groups of friends traveling together.

It is especially suited for guests interested in Japanese architecture, history, and daily life.

* Please note

Takenoya is an old wooden house.

Some traditional features—especially the fusuma, shoji, glass doors, and earthen walls—are delicate and should be handled gently.

If you enjoy old buildings and appreciate the character that comes with age, we think you’ll feel right at home here.

What Makes Takenoya Special

At Takenoya, we don’t just preserve history—we live with it, use it, and pass it on to future generations. Our goal is to offer guests an authentic experience of Japanese heritage paired with thoughtful modern comfort.

Preserved Historic Features

Sliding Entrance Door: Opens with a gentle sound that signaled a family’s arrival long before doorbells existed, welcoming you just as it has welcomed generations before.

Wooden Pillars: Original structural pillars showcasing a natural luster developed over decades (please watch your head).

Original Joinery: Authentic ranma (transoms), fusuma, shoji, and glass doors that let you experience the traditional flow of Japanese home living.

Earthen Walls: Refreshed with natural earthen material layered over the originals, preserving their organic texture and historical character.

Family Heirlooms: Features a paulownia chest bearing the Goshichi-no-Kiri crest, a samurai helmet, and calligraphy scrolls—such as one inscribed with “寛仁厚徳” (virtues of generosity, compassion, and deep character).

Modern Amenities & Comforts

Living & Kitchen: All tatami mats are brand-new, paired with low-profile beds tailored to the low ceilings. The kitchen is fully modernized with a refrigerator, freezer, kettle, and essentials.

Bathroom Amenities: Equipped with a bidet toilet, a 2-meter-wide custom mirror, and a rain shower (~140 × 90 cm) inspired by uchimizu (the traditional practice of sprinkling water to cool hot ground).

Climate Control: Air conditioning and dimmable lighting provide complete comfort while maintaining a quiet, peaceful atmosphere.

Handcrafted Woodwork & Courtyard Garden

Custom Woodwork: Tables, bathroom shelves, and select doors were handcrafted from cedar and hinoki cypress, allowing modern amenities to blend seamlessly into the traditional architecture.

Miniature Garden: A compact courtyard featuring moss, a mikan tree, natural stones, and white gravel—a quiet patch of greenery where you can pause and gaze outside.
