Bird's Nest

Our calendar is updated in real-time & our nightly rates are accurately displayed. Simply enter your desired dates and click 'Book Now!'

Bird’s Nest is located on top of a protected dune with spectacular views of Pelican Cove and the Gulf of Mexico. The fabulous views of the water can be enjoyed from the screened-in porch with outdoor dining for four or from the private hot tub where each night you can see the lighthouse light shining beneath the stars. More of a morning person? Then you will love the kitchen, as it is set up to take advantage of more views from the cozy bench seat where you can sip your morning coffee and watch the sunrise. The views continue in the main bedroom with its en-suite bathroom and large soaking tub. The home also has a loft with two twin beds and a second bathroom with a walk-in shower.

This home also has an elevator that enters from the concrete drive and opens to the main living level. Bird lovers will enjoy scanning the trees for the wide varieties of birds that call Dauphin Island home. Who knows, you may even get a chance to see the bald eagle that is often seen in the trees by Bird’s Nest. If visiting during the cooler seasons, the wood-burning stove is a great way to warm up after a winter stroll with the family dog. It doesn’t get any better than Bird’s Nest, where you can step off the deck and have nothing but sand between you and the shoreline.

A short, sandy walk to the water's edge of Bienville Beach can be enjoyed —a stroll guests have described as enjoyable and part of the experience. A place where you can splash around, swim, and play with the kids. A mile away, you'll find Ship & Shore Supplies Inc. with everything you need to keep your pantry stocked during your stay. Head two-and-a-half miles east to visit Audubon Bird Sanctuary, with maritime forest and walking trails full of spectacular wildlife. Bird lovers will enjoy scanning the trees for the many varieties of birds that call Dauphin Island home.

The day we checked in the A/C was out. The management co did send an HVAC tech who had to put 10lbs of freon in and said the units need replacement. Also the floors were filthy. We asked to have the cleaners come back and went back and forth for 3 days with the management co for 3-days before giving up and the cleaners missing a scheduled time. In addition we rented this home because we like the idea of the hot tub overlooking the dunes and inlet. This dream was smashed when we found out the hot tub didn't work. It was clean but the pumps would not work and not did the heat. We reported this as well on Tuesday night of our stay. I was told they would be out Wednesday to fix it. No one ever showed nor did the management company ever reach back out so we again just gave up. The bottom line is that this property is in disrepair. The photos shown in the listing are not current and their description of a short walk to the public beach means (according to Google) a 20-minute walk in 90 degree weather on hot asphalt and a LONG boardwalk. We chose to drive down to St Stephens Beach which you are givin a parking pass for. Oh and I almost forgot to mention three days in a row of finding large palmetto bugs (part of the roach family) crawling across the floor. They were about 2" long and was told by the management company they are normal but they did come and spray something around the exterior doors and around drains. Will not return!

Our stay was great! Beautiful property! The only negative was that we couldn’t get the vents to work in the master bedroom. Otherwise wonderful place!

Great house on the dunes

Pros: great view, quiet location, hot tub, nice kitchen, elevator is awesome, great washer and dryer, AC blows nice and cold, lots of ceiling fans Cons: furniture and master bed very uncomfortable, killed 3 roaches in house during stay, no blackout shades in master so neighbors porch light shined in all night and early sunrise wakes you up, not much parking on street so guys next door with boats made navigating into the property difficult, slippery master tub so bring a mat,

Not what was shown

The views of the sand dunes and ocean are gorgeous. Best spot to watch the sunset. The island is very nice but not a lot to do and they only have 2 decent restaurants to go to (while we were there). The house needs a lot of work such as a decent paint job with much needed repairs to the damaged walls and the house is covered with mold because of the wood finish not being treated. Windows were filthy and no screens to open to capture the wonderful ocean breeze. We made the best of our stay and ended up leaving a day early.

Some things that need to get fixed

The two showers didn't work, only the overhead in the far bathroom. The hot tub didn't get hot enough. And the mirrors above the vanities were too high for me as I'm a short person.

Love this island

The house is cute. Older than it looks in the pictures but not at all in disrepair. The elevator is a life saver because there are a LOT of stairs. We loved that there are no size restrictions on dogs. We have two gentle giants and they are never allowed anywhere. The bad part is they have to go down the elevator or all the stairs to potty because the back door is the dunes and the burrs are relentless. Inside the house there really isn’t anywhere comfortable to sit around and hang out. The inlet that you can walk to over the dunes is pretty far, you definitely have to like walking to get to the beach! If you want the gulf you will have to drive to a public beach and pay to go. The fridge is not full size and while there is plenty of room there is no ice. Over all the house is nice, however this is the most expensive rental I have ever stayed in and the value for what this place costs just was not there for us.

Not ideal

The property itself was nice and clean. The trash was overflowing and hadn’t been taken out to the curb in a while. This made it impossible to take our trash out. We were also taken aback by the squirrels that have taken over underneath the home and in the roof. They were constant throughout the nighttime and pretty active during the day too. It finally became unbearable for us and our dog. We contacted Vacasa and did not hear back until the next morning. We had decided to check out to enjoy the rest of our time off best we could. We talked with the property manager who didn’t seem too concerned by the infestation. Definitely disappointed. Have been trying to receive a refund for the unused days/days they worked on infestation but cannot get response from them.

Fun stay!!

Property was easy to find. House was exactly as described! House was clean for the most part and looked exactly as the pictures. Only complaint on the cleanliness was that we had to wash quite a few of the dishes before using. A few of the glasses had drink residue in them, dirty silverware, and what appeared to be pet hair in a bunch of the pots and pans. Elevator instructions were hidden, and no book laying out the house rules, or check out procedures. There was no outdoor trash can on site so had to keep the bags of trash inside until checkout. We attempted to use the hot tub on night one and it was unplugged so couldn't even use it the first night as the water was cold and the water was super low so when we turned the jets on at first it just sprayed water everywhere. Outside of those issues the house was nice. It was quiet and secluded. Kids had fun using the sleds down the sand dune. Beach was a short walk away, so we took quite a few walks on the beach. Its in a secluded bay so it doesnt get busy. Plenty of fishing spots, and pirates cove is literally just a walk down the beach. Would stay there again if the price was a bit better.

Great getaway

This is our third time to DI and we continue to enjoy it more and more. This was a great property with exactly what we needed for a 4 day stay on the island. If I had to identify one opportunity for improvement it would be the comfort and pillows of the main bed - not a deal breaker for us- but it could be a bit more comfortable. Overall everything met our needs and we had a wonderful experience.

If you are over 6 foot tall this would be ok

This house was built for extremely tall people. Could only see our eyes in the bathroom mirrors and the countertops and microwave and dryer are hard to reach. Definitely not for disabled even though the shower would lead you to believe it was for a disabled person.Beds are too hard, carpet in master needs replaced, pots and pans and utensils look like they are from a garage sale.

The hose is nice but…

The house is nice but the mattress is hard as a rock and uncomfortable. It could also use a water hose on the front porch or downstairs.

Keys

The keys to the house need labeling or key all locks the same. Also key wouldn't hardly come out of the lock after getting in. Need rug at front door. The instructions for the elevator need to be like close white door or house door then close elevator door. On or besides the elevator.

Swarm of Bugs Indoors,Checkin Problems, Maintenance

There were problems with the elevator. Called the host and never received a response. Their instructions were incomplete. While trying to figure out how it works, had to bring up some luggage the equivalent of 4 flights of stairs. The stairs also had loose handrailing. The lockbox was unsecured when we arrived, anyone could have gotten in. Most awful experience was a “swarm” of termites INDOORS. They were everywhere flying around and getting ON OUR FAMILY. Made more calls to host, was on the phone for hours and they did nothing and there was no place to go. They said it is normal for that area. Termite swarms are normal, just not indoors. We couldn’t sleep, finally closed off part of the house with the shower and washer/dryer and put towels under the door. It stopped new ones from entering. The next day there were dead bugs everywhere, on countertops, drawers, floors. Would never recommend this place.

Birds nest in the dark

Loved the island. Christmas break not too many places to eat. The 3 flights of stairs to the unlighted porch in the cold was annoying. Could’nt see the lock box then had to use a flashlight on my knees to dial the code. The lock box wouldn’t open to release the keys. Called assistance 30 minutes on hold (cold dark) she couldn’t help but found the on island person. Another 30 minutes and This person was not on the island but told us how pry open the space with the keys.
