About this property

Sandy Dunes BeachFront Cottage - Beach Front

This 1940 era beach front cottage sits directly on the beautiful beach of the Chesapeake Bay, just behind a beautiful protective dune.

It features 3 bedrooms and one bathroom. We have all the amenities that will allow you and your family to enjoy the beach and create wonderful memories.

We are Pet Friendly with hardwood floors throughout the home. We still have the original hardwood floors so clean up after the little ones is a Breeze! Both the little two legged ones and the 4 Legged ones!

Our beach cottage has a large yard just before you get to the beach. We have a private driveway that will allow for 2 vehicles. We have a 75" Large Smart TV along with High Speed WiFi for your streaming tv entertainment. The beach is about a 20 second walk from the back door. We also have a washer/dryer for your convenience.

Our back deck allows for a very relaxing place to enjoy the little ones and your 4 legged family members. Enjoy the beautiful views of the beach/bay on our outdoor furniture and enjoy our charcoal grill for those outdoor cooking events! We also have a fire pit where you can sit outside and enjoy a campfire!

This property is a bit dated as it was built during the 1940's. All systems and appliances work as they should; this is a vintage cottage on the bay that exhibits the historical architecture and features of yesterday. As such, this older home may not be for everyone. We do strive to make these older homes as comfortable, clean and cozy as possible. However it is not perfect in every way - some floors are not perfectly level, some windows do not open easily, some trim is missing around the back deck, interior doors and locks are a bit older - if these items are important to you, maybe another unit would be more suitable.

That being said, our location can not be beat! Parking is right outside your door. There is a small unit above this cottage in the “attic” space. Those guests have their own entrance/exit and nothing is shared. Except the backyard and the beach!

Even with a thorough modernization the property is a historical home that is now over 100 years old. It has some eccentricities that reflect building standards and designs from the turn of the last century that lends to its charm as an older beach cottage. But even so, we hope that you will love our older and charming home.

Quiet hours begin at 9 PM.

This is a Family/Residential unit and area. No loud music or noise. There is another unit carved out of the attic. Each unit has its own entrance and exit, only the backyard and beach is shared.

The outside of the property needs some upkeep but we didn’t mind because it was such a charming place.

Perfect for a quiet beach stay!

You can’t beat the location! A short walk through the sand dunes and you are on a quiet, secluded beach. No crowds here. The house was as described and had everything we needed for our stay. We enjoyed hanging out around the fire pit and cooking hot dogs. Everything you need is within a 2 mile radius including a grocery store and ice cream. 7-11 is right across the street. We would definitely stay again.

Hidden Gem

Check in and out process was a breeze. Location is decent for resturaunts, there are multiple grocery and convenience store within a 10 min drive. Literally walk out back and over the dunes and you are at the beach. The house is as said in description. Could tell that the owner cares about reviews all the negative ones from previous years have been addressed. Only bummer for us personally was the listing that there was a blender(only because we like our protien smoothies in the morning). There is also no remote for the T.V. this was not by any means a deal breaker because we try to have a no electronics rule on family trips. This place is perfect if you are wanting a relaxing beach vacation and you want to bring your fur babies!

Should not be rented in its current state.

The beach is over the dunes. Cant't open any doors or windows to hear it as there are no screens. The bathroom is decrepit! The lighting inside is the whole house is horrendous. NOOOOO cleaning supplies anywhere but an expectation that it be left clean. Dog crap piles in the little back yard. Sort of a fire pit but no chairs around it. The next night we stayed in a beautiful property in South Carolina that was pristine, beautifully decorated, with compfortable furniture and glorious view-AND a third less money!

Home is not OK!

Location is the ONLY perk to this property. Upon arrival we found the place to be minimally tidy and the smell of mold. It isn't adequately stocked with even a counter cleaner, toliet paper, paper towels, 3 forks.I asked if we could be provided with a few things including batteries for thermostat that were low, few fans (place does not properly cool) She was out of town and told me to buy whatever I needed to make our stay better and she would reimburse, which she did. I kept the purchase under $75 but could have easily spent $500 plus. I changed out the moldy shower curtain and bleached the bathroom. Fridge upon arrival was 56 degrees, we fixed it temporarily, has needed maintenance for quite sometime, cleaned all mold out of it. AC UNIT not maintenanced. Filter filthy. Pictures were taken and sent. There is NOTHING comfortable about this home.Manager agreed home has been neglected, due to owner waiting to demo and build new and need to be careful with money going into it. Kathleen is friendly, as I asked to check in 2 days earlier as there was no one booked, she graciously accepted us. The additional nights were direct booking and wondering where all the money is going to, because its not going into your stay. "Budget" is the motto here, but basics are not being met. $2,400 for 5 nights is not a budget stay here given the inside living conditions. My heart hurts for this home on such a pretty beach

Awful house!

This house should not be on rented to the public. The smell was terrible, floors were not level, rotten wood on the door frames, exterior locks would not lock, peeling paint on the ceiling throughout the house, interior door knobs not working properly, hot water heater did not work when we arrived so there was no hot water. The owner said it was working when they left the house but when we touched the hot water line on the hot water heater, it was stone cold and obviously had not been working for a while. The extetior has rotten wood and peeling paint. We called the owner and told him of the issues and that we were not happy with the condition of the house. He was indifferent. They knew what kind of house they were renting to people, hoping people would just accept its condition. We have rented houses for vacation for 20 years and this the most disgusting home we have ever been in. If this is the kind of home VRBO is renting to consumers, we strongly urge VRBO to inspect them before you accept them to your site. Nevertheless, we left the home after arriving and rented another house instead which was a great house with no issues. This house should be taken off your site until the owners have proven it is inhabitable for consumers. They refused to refund our money after we told them of all the issues, which of course they knew of. Their indifference is disappointing, to say the very least. We were so angry when arriving at the house after driving 600 miles to visit our son for Christmas who had just returned from deployment. All we want is our money returned to us. Given the condition of the house.

After communicating with person who maintained property not very good service this holiday had been planned for a year to have to cut it short from a week to 2 nights as house was unfit to rent out ....had coachroaches in all the rooms when I told the maintenance man he just said they are bugs ...having 5 lady's sleeping there not a nice experience ...we tried to get money back but he has still declined after paying nearly 23000 dollors very bad experience ...

Beautiful Relaxation

Very beautiful views, peaceful surroundings very well kept & furnished to one’s pleasure for a relaxing time away from life’s struggles that offers total comfort along with a two thumbs up in customer support! This location was one of my absolute favorites & I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway that offers a private slice of heaven onto a more private area of beach just out back! The views listed are accurate but seeing for one’s self are breathtaking! I’ll definitely be returning in the near future! Jim

No thank you

When we walked in, we smelled mold and mildew. The bathroom sink stopped up within half hour. The house is poorly maintained and feels held together with duck tape. I felt grimy and unable to relax. The deck area had rotten wood and the deck itself had black all over that looked like mold or mildew. We complained to the host and she moved us out to one of her other properties to finish our reservation nights. Vintage charm with somethings that are not perfect is fine. This house is not that. We felt misled. Waaay too pricey for what is it. A nearby beach does not make up for it.

Low key beachy

Exactly what we expected based on the listing. Biggest perk is the location. Great beach, low key, not crowded and extremely close to the property. Accommodations were as described by others. Minimal, fairly well worn, but all that's really needed for a family wanting easy access to the beach. Will likely come back.

Blue house on the beach

We had a great time in our little blue house on the beach. Great location. We had plenty of room for 4 people. Great kitchen. We just wished the weather was better. I would recommend this house to family and friends.

Loved being right on the beach! House could use a little work and maybe a few more comforts of home, but I would stay here again for the access to the beach. Communication with the owner and check in/out was a breeze.

Quick trip to the beach

We had a great time, the property is in a perfect location and is exactly as described. The kitchen has everything you need to cook your meal. We took our 5-month-old pup and he loved the beach. The beach was not busy at all which was great. Note there is nothing to wash your feet off when you get back from the beach which is not a show stopper so what we did is we took a bucket or anything that holds water and filled it up before we went to the beach when we got back we washed our feet and voila no dragging sand in the house. Thanks again Kathy and George for having a great place to stay.

Basic beach cottage with great beach access

The cottage is a no frills older property. The inside was clean and fairly well stocked with paper products and basic supplies. The stove/oven is pretty crappy so don’t plan on gourmet cooking. The deck needs some TLC. There were broken chairs and umbrella parts scattered about and that’s why I didn’t rate it higher. Also, there are no screens so you can’t leave the windows open. If they put some effort into the outside area I would give it five stars as the beach access can’t be beat and it’s nice to be able to bring your pet.

Cute older cottage

The house was as advertised. It's an older cottage but really cute, spacious and the perfect location. The only comment I would say is there is no outdoor shower or spicket to wash off the sand before entering the house. We had a wonderful time and would stay again.

Perfect for our family, including our dog. Property is as advertised-somewhat dated but clean and well cared for. Property owners promptly fixed a wonky ceiling fan. Loved the deck! Ate out there for three dinners. Knew to bring our own camp chairs from prior reviews. Brought wood for fire pit at night and were glad we did. Beds and living room furniture comfortable. Location right on beach and walking distance from Bold Mariner, priceless!

Great location, house as-advertised

This is our second stay on the Ocean View beach. It is a quiet beach, very pet friendly (lots of dogs, most owners keep them on-leash or very well controlled). It is a nice view if you don't mind seeing shipping and other activity headed to/from the Atlantic. The house is, as the owner discloses, an older property. Furnishings are basic, but adequate. Some deficiencies were promptly remedied by the owner, so if you don't see something you thought might be provided, just ask. The AC never quite controlled the temperature for us. A repair made some difference, but during a hot spell it just doesn't seem up to the task. I suspect this is part of the "older property" situation. Also the plumbing in the bathroom isn't exactly first rate, and there isn't anywhere to hose off sandy feet outside. We really enjoyed ourselves and didn't mind the less-than-lux accommodations since we wanted to be beachfront. Hope you do too!

Great property for a quick beach getaway!

We really enjoyed ourselves during our short 2 night stay. The house had all we needed for a short trip and the location was great. The beach was right out the back door and it wasn't too crowded. There were nice families all around us and it was quite picturesque. There was a 7-Eleven directly across the street that we could walk to if we needed anything. Overall, five stars! The only suggestion I would make is that it would be nice if there was some furniture out in the backyard or on the patio to sit and enjoy the evening and listen to the ocean. Thanks so much for a wonderful stay!!

Great getaway

My family and I had a great time. The house is dated and has some quirks but u cant beat the location. We spent most if the time at the beach anyway, which was just steps away. Communication with the property manager was very prompt and helpful. Will definitely go again.

The beachfront aspect was the reason that we stayed there. And the ability to bring a pet. But, we would likely not stay there again, because it is pretty dated, and only one bathroom wont suffice for us in the future.

Nice location - Dog friendly

We had a nice week at this house in Norfolk. Great location on the beach and saw dolphins right out front each morning. House was very much how it is listed. Older home and needs some updating, but nice to have the washer/dryer and has the amenities indoors that you would need for the week. Two notes that were not game changers, but good to note. The day we arrived, we got in late and heard something in what we thought was the attic. There is in fact a second apartment upstairs so you will hear movement. Again, not a deterrent from renting, just was surprised, so would be nice to have known prior. (I later noticed this note in a previous review, but had not read it prior to arriving) Secondly, bring beach chairs and amenities for outdoors. There is a fire pit, but nothing to sit on and nothing for the beach, so bring your own.. All in all a nice place and location worked well for us!

Perfect beach weekend

My husband, 3 yo, and 1 up son came for the weekend. The location was PERFECT. With little ones, not having to put them in a car or wagon and walking out onto the beach was amazing. We were able to take walks on the beach after dinner and taking an early morning walk on the beach in our pjs! It was in a quiet part of Norfolk with all the restaurants we needed about 15 minutes away. There was a playground 2 minutes up the road. The house itself was fine. It could have been a little cleaner (sweeping under the table) but overall fairly clean. I'm not sure if I didn't read closely enough, but the bathtub doesn't work - it's just a shower. But a safe enclosed little backyard and a child's picnic table plus a huge tv in a comfy living room was worth it. If you're planning on cooking, bring as many tools as possible. If the owners could buy measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls, and basic spatulas and whisks and things like that it would be awesome. Otherwise, we would definitely come back when they boys are older and being everything we needed to cook.
