About this property

The Red Door Cabin at Lake Mohawk

Escape the routine in our beautiful cabin located in Lake Mohawk, NJ. Just 1 hour from NYC, our home has everything you need for a great getaway with friends and family. The cabin was built in the 1930s and has retained all of the original charm but been beautifully updated for comfort. Welcome to our paradise!

The cabin is an original Crane house from the 1930s and has the look and feel of an old school cabin right out of the movies but with all of the modern amenities that make this a fun getaway location for extended groups. The carefully curated lake house style and open layout will help make this a vacation to remember. Unique features like the swing chair in the living room, projector screen for movie nights, fireplace, loft area and kids room with vaulted ceilings will round out the experience.

For those traveling with younger kids, access to the 2nd floor loft area and kids room can be controlled with a child safety gate. Additionally, we have a highchair and pack & play available for those that rather not bring their own. There is public beach access at Lake Hopatcong, about 15 min drive, with State Park and boat rentals.

Beautiful cottage perfect for family visit
For a nearly 100-year old home this cottage was INCREDIBLY maintained. It has so much charm and was perfect for some hometown time with family and old friends. A couple words of caution for future guests: 1. Request the home to be pre-heated prior to your arrival if you are staying in the winter. The home is old with many original windows so it took nearly 4 hours to reach a comfortable heated temperature on a very mild winter day. 2. Ensure you have 4 wheel drive car or rental if you plan to stay here in snowy months. The house is built into a mountainside and not on a main road. You won’t be able to get out if you get a snow storm and don’t have a winter vehicle. 3. EXTRA firm beds in the bedrooms. We appreciated this but they aren’t for everyone.

Quintessential Lake House
Stayed at the house with some friends for our high school reunion weekend. The house is the quintessential lake Mohawk house. Extremely charming and in excellent condition. Very clean, decorated nicely and well appointed. Great location not far from the plaza. We loved it and had a great time. Only watch-out is the stairs leading up to the house and to the 2nd floor are very steep. Would book again!

Rustic cabin
We had a great time staying at this property. The cabin is well equipped, rustic and has fun toys and equipment that our 2 1/2 yr old grandson enjoyed. The surrounding area is rural and nearby Sparta is quaint with fun shopping areas. We would caution parents of young children that there are narrow wood stairs to navigate to access the single beds upstairs as well as a low railing in the upper level that opens to the main living area in the main floor that would be dangerous for under 4 year olds to navigate without supervision.

Wedding weekend
We are a family of 8. Parents are 60+ and kids are 30s. We traveled to Sparta for a wedding at Perona Farms. House is charming and clean and well located. One bathroom was a challenge . There are many stairs to climb with luggage so not a good choice for older folks or those with any handicap. A bit light on blankets and towels. Fireplace chimney needs cleaning. Damper was open but house filled with smoke so we couldn’t use it. Kitchen was stocked well. No smoke smoke detectors in bedrooms. Enough chairs for dining but not in living area. Interior stairs very narrow and steep. Caution ! Lovely backyard. Bees nest somewhere in house so always bees flying around. Thank you for sharing your home with us.
