A House With Heart!
Everything about this home is thoughtful. Beautiful hardwood flooring, lovely furnishings, live plants, down comforters, kitchen amenities, nice dishes and glasses, etc. Excellent location, walk to everything you could need. We loved the Welcome Book which introduces many of the local shops and restaurants. Many thanks to the very thoughtful hosts!

Beautiful Escapr
An absolute GEM in the California foothills. The house has been so beautifully decorated, it’s spacious yet cozy, modern but also gives off that charming historic vibe. Great location, walk to town and enjoy all the beauty of downtown Sonora. Love this place and the hosts were great so responsive and so hospitable. You won’t be disappointed.

House for a Hometown Visit
Close to the main street of this historic town and just a few minute’s drive from everywhere else in town, this typical Sonoran home is a wonderful temporary “home-place” for visitors and returning expatriates alike. The charming old house has been thoroughly and beautifully up-graded within, while keeping its pleasant small town charm. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen well equipped, the dining room spacious, and the living room a perfect place to gather and visit, or settle down with one of the historic books displayed within the house. The weather was too cold for us to use the screened-in north-facing or the west-facing front porches, but we could imagine how lovely they would be in a different season. The owner was wonderful and responsive, and she had help, for the minor lighting issues we had, right in town (so we got to meet her friendly and interesting parents!) The only drawbacks as we saw them were the traffic noise: being easy to find and close to everything also meant we were close to the main road and its steam of cars, and the fig tree in the backyard: too late in the season to enjoy eating the figs, but they were gooey underfoot every time we went to and from the parking place for the car in the back. Despite these minor annoyances, we hope to book this home again the next time we go to Sonora.

Great Stay
Our employees had two great stays at this house. They had everything they needed. Breanna was a good communicator. One of our employees left his iPad at the house and Breanna called right away to make us aware of it. I would recommend this house rental.

Hi, I am Breanna the owner of The Bauman House. I was born and raised in Southern California. My family moved to Sonora around 2003 and I love to visit as much as possible with my own little family.

Why they chose this property

My mom owns Fittin' Pretty, a women's clothing boutique, located downtown. We spent countless hours downtown helping her launch her shop. Every time we visit we spend a lot of time downtown. This means that we drive on Washington street and past all of the cool old houses often. There was always this one yellow house with the porch, the one that always made us smile. Well, one day we found out it was for sale. We put in an offer immediately. Most people look at the inspection reports, and all that formal stuff. We did that but we also dug up the history of the house and fell even more in love. We wanted to share our sweet little piece of Sonora's history with others. We want people to visit that have never heard of the place before. Last but not least we want to support the local economy by supporting the amazing small business owners downtown.

What makes this property unique

The Bauman House tax roles say that it was built in 1865. We dug even deeper to find the real history of the home. Hours upon hours of searching helped us get to the real story. Here is a brief summary:

John Bauman moved to Sonora and opened the first Sonora Brewery in the 1800's. It was located right up the street but it ended operations in the early 1900's (a book with some history can be found in the home).

John and his wife had a good amount of children, ome of then was named George Bauman.

Mr. Willisten came to Sonora to find gold in the streets. Literally people would come here to look for gold in the mine tailings that were dropped in the streets. His wife joined him at a later date.

Mr. Willisten owned the property that The Bauman house sits on today.

Their daughter married George Bauman. Together they built The Bauman House. A historical society survey says this was done in 1910.

They had two daughters. One of the daughters participated in "The Voices of History" series with Columbia College. Her oral interview took place in 1989 and can be found online. In that interview she talks about her family, growing up in the house and in the town of Sonora.

Little fun facts: The house is located across the street from The Bonanza Mine & we planted a cherry tree in the backyard to pay respect to The Bauman Family. They had two in the front yard and one of the trees was taken out by cattle in the early 1900s.

Once the historical society opens back up we should have more photos and history to provide for our guests.
