NEW as of Dec. 1, 2010: 8-person gondola (80 cabins!) from the Zauchen base station to the Mitterstein (2,000 m). Also great for winter hikers—clear trails on the Lawinenstein! World Cup and Ski Flying World Cup events at the Kulm ski flying hill, with magnificent scenery. Be there, among international celebrities from sports, television, and politics, at the Ski Flying World Championships or the World Cup events on the world’s largest natural ski flying hill in Kulm. Hill record: World Championships 2016 (244 m (Peter Prevc / Slovenia). In summer, the World Cup ski flying hill (great panoramic view!) is easy to visit on the Kulm (on foot). Exciting World Cup cross-country skiing competitions, World Cross-Country Skiing Championships training at Tauplitzalm in early winter, the dog sledding championship, and various World Cup and European Cup races. These enchanting mountain and lake landscapes once delighted the imperial family. Many celebrities and literary figures have called this place home: among others, Klaus-Maria Brandauer (Altaussee), Paul Dahlke (who lived in Grundlsee), Lutz Maurer (ORF), and Hann Androsch. Boats for rent can be found on the 6-km-long, wildly romantic Bad Mitterndorf Salza Reservoir with the Grimmingl cliffs, or on Lake Grundl or Lake Altaussee. Everywhere offers a magnificent mountain panorama. Nearby: a popular climbing garden (Pürgg, Ennstal) with a variety of routes and difficulty levels.
