About this property

Secluded mountain home; explorable acreage; free of noise and light pollution

The farmhouse sits almost one mile off of US Route 220 with the nearest neighbor being a half mile away with 150 mostly forested acres to explore with old roads, trails, and a mountain stream . Three covered porches include a spa, grill, and porch swing. An elderly neighbor does walk the property for exercise as has been his routine for 25 years but is very respectful of guests and maintains guests’ privacy.

Beautiful Mountain Retreat
What a treat! Our family had a wonderful stay at Balm of Gilead. A magnificent setting with a stream running right out front and mountain view. We were so comfortable with plenty of room and everything you could imagine you might need. Wonderful area to hike or just sit on the porch and the hot rub was nice too. We hope to return before too long and again next year for the Maple Festival!

About the host

Hosted by Nicole Hevener

Host profile image
Johnny and Nicole have been married for over 30 years, and our three children are now married and living away. Our first grandchild was added to the family in 2022. Getting together is always a special time, and times with friends are always cherished. This property was purchased prior to us as a hunting cabin, and the family had not stayed for a few years prior to us purchasing it. While this has been a work in progress, we enjoy developing this location for our family and to share with others.

Why they chose this property

While allowing for solitude and relaxation, several sites and attractions such as the renowned Seneca Rocks, Spruce Knob, Dolly Sods, and Germany Valley are in a close vicinity. This location allows for guests to unwind yet also be able to enjoy near-by local restaurants and county stores. Franklin, West Virginia has the Treasure Mountain Festival each September, and the Highland County Maple Festival in March in Monterey, Virginia is only 10 miles away. The fall is especially beautiful in this area when the leaves start to change color. Anglers can enjoy fishing in the nearby South Branch of the Potomac River.

What makes this property unique

This location is a great place to truly relax! There are no street lights or road traffic, and the sound of the creek is calming. This home is a great location for couples or for a family to celebrate a special occasion. Read a book by the fire, watch the birds while sipping coffee on the front porch, or enjoy the hot tub!
