About this property

Home Villa Arusha

Home Villa Arusha is located 20 minutes outside of Arusha Town in Murieth. Murieth is a small developing neighborhood full of families and small children. Staying here is a very different experience than staying in the busy town center. Home Villa prides itself on it’s friendly atmosphere and relaxed environment.

When you enter the gate of Home Villa, you will feel like you have arrived home. If you were to arrive on a typical evening, even before entering the gate you would be greeted by the sound of laughter. Your first impression is of a campfire surrounded by guests from different countries along with your host Hillary and his cheerful employees Michael and Neema. They may be playing safari trivia or Hillary may be teaching a begining Swahili lesson. You will be welcomed into the Home Villa family.

Most evenings after eating a typical Tanzanian dinner, guests gather around the campfire to talk about their adventures or perhaps play games. Hillary Ngowi, the owner does an amazing job of bringing people together and making Home Villa your home away from home.

Staying at Home Villa is a very different experience than staying in a big hotel or hostel in town. Hostels normally consist of communal living with many people and shared bathrooms. Big hotels mimic western living so it’s not a typical Tanzanian experience. Home Villa is a small oasis away from the noise and crowds of the city. All rooms here have their own ensuite bathroom so you have everything you need right in your room. When you venture outside your home away from home you will see how typical Tanzanians live. New houses line the main street where you will see children playing and women dressed in beautiful colors strolling down the road

About the host

Hosted by Hillary Richard Ngowi

Host profile image
Hillary Ngowi is the owner of Home Villa Arusha. He is a native Tanzanian, born and raised in Babati a small village which is located three hours northwest of Arusha Town. When he was sixteen, he ran away to Arusha Town with a family promise of education there. But the promise fell through and Hillary was homeless, living in the streets of Arusha for one year. To get ahead, he washed car windshields in the town centre and was able to save enough money to go to driving school and get his driver’s license. When he was eighteen he began driving a taxi at night and attending school during the day. While in school he learned English and the skills to become a safari guide.

During COVID Hillary decided to put his energy into making the perfect guest house. He founded Home Villa Arusha. With money that he had saved working as a safari guide and driving a taxi, he purchased land and built the building that is now Home Villa Arusha. He has succeded in making a warm, welcoming space for visitors to Tanzania who will experience fellowship with staff and fellow travellers. The location, about 15 minutes from town gives visitors the experience of staying in a Tanzanian neighbourhood.
