About this property

Farmstay, 2 bedrooms with 2 private baths, private entrance.

Enjoy the country and stay with us on our farm. We are located within easy access to Camden and Damariscotta. Birchfield Farm is a 70 acre farm, set back from the road on a long gravel driveway. Children are especially welcome. This rental has 2 bedrooms , 2 full baths, and a living room area. The entire unit is rented whether one bedroom is used or two. You will have a refrigerator, microwave, and coffeemaker. There is no kitchen with the rental rooms. The rental has a private porch facing the garden, away from the barn, and a deck. It consists of a living room with cable TV and internet. There are two bathrooms, all completely remodeled. This old house does not have an upstairs bathroom, and the previous owners put two bathrooms in the addition years ago. Double beds in each bedroom because a queen did not fit up the stairwell. We ask for an extra $20 per person per night for over 2 guests, and $10 per night for a pet.
We have a small dog, a Lhasa Apso, our timid farm dog. Our farm has horses, sheep, chickens and minilop rabbits. We raise our sheep for fleece and lambs. We have two horses, and 8 Finn sheep. There are large fields and walking paths. The farm has 4 barns, and a garden. The long driveway opens up to the farm away from the traffic on the main road.

We spent several nights at the Birchfield farm VRBO. It was a nice experience meeting all of the farm animals and our hosts Denise and Bruce. The location in mid-coast is a great jumping off point to visit all of the towns and attractions the area has to offer.

Farm Stay, Wonderful Stay
We enjoyed staying here for 2 nights in late March. The property is somewhat close to Darmascota, Maine down a little dirt road. The owners gave excellent directions or we would have gotten lost when we arrived after dark. They let our 16 year old son feed the sheep and bunnies and the highlight for him was holding and bottle feeding a 3 week old lamb. The property itself does not have a kitchen, just a shelf with paper plates, bowls and a little mini fridge. It was cold out when we arrived but the beds are comfortable and lots of warm blankets kept us warm. There are 2 nice bathrooms downstairs. The two spacious bedrooms are upstairs. Lots of stairs, not for someone having trouble with stairs. Everything was very clean and comfortable. We even watched a movie one night. The owners were very friendly, greeting us when we arrived and when we departed. Our son got to help with the morning feeding of animals before we left. Nice unique place to stay, especially for children and people that like farms. You can tell the owners like what they do.The only downside is it is attached to their home. We felt like they may have heard the TV so we were trying to be quiet. We'd stay there again if we're in the area. They were helpful telling us where to eat. Just keep in mind there's no kitchen. We just had cereal and milk eaten out of paper bowls and plastic spoons.

Waldoboro Retreat
I truly loved my stay here in this very sweet and serene country farmstead. The accommodations were very comfortable. I loved the views of the surrounding woods and fields as well as the warmth and coziness of the guest quarters on what was a very cold night in Maine. The smell of wood smoke and the starlit sky above made me feel that “ all was right with the world”.

We have lived here full time for over 8 years. We moved from Falmouth, Massachusetts.
We started with our horses, and added sheep 4 years ago. I am a nurse practitioner, working from home via Telehealth, and Bruce worked in the computer industry, but has retired. He works driving cars for the local chevrolet dealership. He always has a carpentry project around this farm, always making it better for the next generation. We both are super busy with the farm and all there is to do. The animals require about an hour of care in the morning, lunch of course, and about a one and 1/2 hours in the evening. Plus fence repairs, lawns to mow, painting old doors and windows, and anything else that needs improvement. We have 3 grown daughters: a fulltime Mom to our 2 grandkids, a pharmacist, and an airline attendant. They would like us to remain in Falmouth, but we are happy here on the farm.

Why they chose this property

This farm was my dream to live here, but when the kids were young, they did not want to move. Finally I got employment and moved here in 2015. It is so open and peaceful . On a clear night the sky is amazing with the stars. Bruce keeps an outside camera and delights in the coyotes and deer he catches on his camera. I can ride my horse in the field and there are trails off the property. I did the research on this farm, and it was originally the Farnsworth Farm. The records go back to 1824. There are old large horseshoes, horse equipment and stone walls. I am amazed that people years ago could clear this rocky field and make a farm with these horse implements.
There are many great activities near the farm. These include Camden Windjammer schooner sailing , a Monhegan Island visit, a day trip to Acadia National Park, Lighthouses to visit and puffin cruises. Treat yourself to a McLoon's lobster at the Spruce Head harbor.

We eat better than we ever did! There is always something to do. I have learned how to make yogurt, Salsa, cheeses and buttermilk biscuits. Bruce has made major contributions to fixing things in the Barns and the farmhouse. We have lots of farm neighbors. A farm cheese shop nearby offers farm made cheeses for sale. There are hay bales in our barn with a delightful hay smell.

What makes this property unique

The fresh air has a hint of salt from Broad Bay. If you are here on a clear night, the stars are amazing over the field.
