Quiet and serene (despite hurricane Dorian’s attempts to disrupt us). The perfect home base for exploring Cape Breton Island. Beautiful scenery - breathtaking sunrises and the moon reflecting on the water was spectacular.
Green Gate Cottage is a beautiful home that is well maintained and offers plenty of amenities. Lots of space and total privacy. Homeowner Tonia was great.
Stay here and explore or just stay and watch the seals, listen to the water and relax. I will definitely rent here again!
Beautiful spot. Wonderful house, well equipped.
Highly recommend Green Gate Cottage. Quiet, great scenery. Nice jumping off spot for the Cabot Trail and national park.
We had a wonderful week staying at Green Gate cottage! The cottage was so beautiful and comfortable. We had everything we needed and enjoyed trying out hikes, restaurants and musical experiences that Tonia and Steve recommended. The view out all of the windows was spectacular! My girls had fun spotting seals popping their heads out of the water. We made some magical memories and are sad to leave!
The property was so much more than we were expecting.
The pictures do not do it justice, the views were spectacular.
Spectacular seaside setting, gorgeous home with comfy beds, large, well-appointed kitchen, large dining area, roomy deck from which to watch seals and gannets - and all of it immaculate. We'd return in a heartbeat!
Best of the best
Our first visit to Cape Breton, a family vacation to celebrate our parents' 50th anniversary, was fantastic. The island is breathtakingly beautiful, but we all agreed that Green Gate Cottage was the highlight of our trip. The house was immaculately kept (Mom says thank you for the very comfy beds!) and stocked with everything we needed and more, which we certainly appreciated, but it was the setting that truly captivated us. Driving down the lane, we could smell the evergreens; the moment we stepped into the cottage and saw nothing but ocean in front of us, our hearts lightened. The house is so private, and what a bonus that all the rooms have the dynamite ocean view!
The seclusion was well worth it to us to drive a little longer to amenities. On the drive in, we stocked up for some simple meals with fresh ingredients, which was fortunate -- once we discovered we had the best views on the island right there, we weren't even interested in dining out! Very close by, we enjoyed sampling the Pannekoek at the Dancing Moose Cafe and shopping at Wildfire for handmade gifts made locally. Just over 30 min away were golf at Highland Links & fresh fish at Rod's Lobsters. Donelda's Puffin Boat tour was great fun; our personable guides knew all there is to know about North Atlantic birds & gave us insight to what life is like on the island.
We enjoyed exploring Cape Breton & found plenty of activities for all of us (kayaking, golf, Celtic music, hikes both leisurely and challenging) but we made sure to take time every day just to sit on the porch at the cottage and listen to the waves coming in. We saw hummingbirds, a variety of seabirds, and even two seals who would pop their heads up as they floated by each day.
Tonia was very helpful in offering suggestions of things to do near the cottage, and she responded very quickly to all my questions before the trip. The delightful caretaker checked in by phone to see if we needed anything but gave us our privacy.
I highly recommend a stay at Green Gate Cottage. It's refreshment for the soul! We are so grateful to Tonia and Steve for sharing their corner of heaven on earth.
