About this property

Stay in a Renovated 1900s-era Vermont Schoolhouse with Sweeping Mountain Views

If you are looking for something absolutely unique, come and stay in this comfortable, sunlit, three-bedroom renovated Vermont schoolhouse. Dating back to the 1900s, the schoolhouse has been updated with a large fully-outfitted kitchen, dining room, two baths, a deck, and large sun-soaked windows and skylights, while still retaining its old-world charm. Surrounded by trees, rolling greenspace, and a view of the mountains, the schoolhouse is located within the lovely hamlet of Wolcott, just 25 minutes from Stowe’s town center.

For those looking for a longer-term retreat who would wish to stay for several weeks or even a month or two, a special rate is possible. Please inquire with your potential dates.

The space

The large kitchen features a center island for food prep, a cozy breakfast nook, and a range of appliances including a gas range, oven, dishwasher, and microwave. The kitchen opens directly into the dining room, with a rustic pine farmer's table which sits 8 comfortably. The sunlit living room features a Plasma TV and DVD player. Furnishings include one-of-a-kind antiques and contemporary pieces by some of the finest Vermont artisans. There is a full bathroom with a large, tiled walk-in shower.

The second floor contains three bedrooms, two with Queen-sized beds and skylights facing the Mount Mansfield range to the west. The third bedroom has a Double-sized bed. In the central hallway is a daybed with trundle. There is a study with a desk, wireless internet, and bookshelves. The master bedroom has its own balcony, perfect for your morning coffee or for meditation. The bedroom also has a separate seating area, with a small gas stove to warm yourself on cold days. The second full bathroom has a fine old clawfoot tub, as well as a laundry/linen room with a brand-new washer and dryer.

Neighborhood Overview

The property is located on 4.5 acres in Wolcott with superb 360 degree views of farmlands, woodlands, meadows, and the nearby Mount Mansfield range. Wolcott and its surrounding environs have become a model for sustainable living, with organic farms, artisanal food, and farmers' markets. The schoolhouse itself is a half-hour drive to Stowe and about an hour's drive to three other superb skiing locations: Burke, Smuggler's Notch, and Jay Peak. Stowe is the closest, and definitely worth paying a visit.

In Winter you can ski (cross-country and downhill), snowboard, snowshoe, or stay indoors to read, write and cozy up with a cup of hot chocolate. In Spring and Summer you can swim, hike, bike, fish, then come home and enjoy a barbecue on the front deck; in Fall, you can explore the changing foliage, farmer's markets, and the fine food at local restaurants in nearby towns. In short, the schoolhouse offers a glorious retreat from hectic city life.

Exceeded all expectations
We had a wonderful time at the schoolhouse. Property felt like home away from home, and more. Communication with the Owner was nothing short of wonderful. Highly recommend this property and we look forward to staying there again.

One of a kind
Florence's schoolhouse is a truly remarkable place. Spacious, homey, historic, and quaint. The house is well stocked with everything you might possibly need, and the location is tranquil and gorgeous. I had the pleasure of staying a month during the fall and would not have wished to be anywhere else in the world. Thank you Florence!

School House Ski Weekend
We returned to the school house for a long weekend in February. It is our favorite home away from home and I will always be grateful that we found it! It is cozy and warm beautifully decorated and just feels like a peaceful retreat. We read, cooked, played board games and never turned the TV on - perfect weekend to connect as a family. We will be back! Thank you Florence for sharing your space with us! Cristi Q

VRBO at its very best
Since our daughter was being married right across the road, our schedule was extremely packed, we were very grateful that everything was absolutely perfect and easy. All of us gushed about the accommodations and the attention to detail. Thank you, Florence. dh

About the host

Hosted by Florence Falk

Host profile image
I am a psychotherapist and writer living in New York City and, as much as I can, in Vermont, one of the most beautiful and compelling states in the U.S. I have spent time in Vermont since childhood and grown to love it more and more. The schoolhouse is my second Vermont home and is indeed my sanctuary. My hope, for the time you visit, is that it will be yours as well.

Why they chose this property

From the Schoolhouse, you can see extraordinary 360 degrees of mountain views. The house itself is on a country road, which is well maintained all year long. Wolcott is just far enough from towns and cities to feel like real country, yet close enough to all enticements--skiing, swimming, hiking, good food, movies, etc.--to feel truly connected to one's surroundings. The house itself is near the crest of the hill, with large maple trees for shade and an expansive lawn and deck to spend summer days. My caretaker lives across the road, so the house is very well cared for. It is very beautiful, outside and in, spacious, and utterly comfortable.

What makes this property unique

Vermont is a 'unique benefit' in and of itself. Best of all, the house is a gem and provides the kind of retreat from the pressures of daily life that we all need to restore ourselves and bring equilibrium back into our lives. What's more, it is a haven for children, and when they feel like it, they can ring the original schoolbell on the second floor--a reminder of its original purpose. In fact, one of the reasons I love the house is because it is light and airy and suffused with the light energy of children.
