About this property
Journey to Thimble Rock Point, Journey to Thimble Rock Point
Thimble Rock Point, located in the heart of the Unaweep Canyon. If you listen close this sacred ground still echoes footsteps of the past. At first glance it is raw and rugged, a place where wildlife still roam free and skies stretch beyond the horizon. But it is also a place of calm. Here the natural world dominates in every direction, you feel it immediately and your senses take over. Go with it, embrace it and breathe in all it has to offer.
Getting there: Traveling by car? Colorado state highways are well maintained year-round. Even so, we encourage travelers to check road conditions (CDOT) in advance for possible delays or closures. Snow plows are quick to respond to winter storms. However from November thru March all wheel drive or 4wd is required to access the A-frame.
The closest Airport is in Grand Junction, CO. Grand Junction Regional Airport Another option Montrose Regional Airport
What is Thimble Rock? Thimble Rock is a 1200' monolith that rises from the canyon floor (that's the equivalent height of the Empire State building). It is the star of the show and you can't miss this behemoth with views from the A-frame, aka Thimble Rock Point. Composed mostly of granite this enormous out cropping is the most impressive monolith in the Unaweep Canyon.
Our space was built for the traveler who seeks more than shelter but an experience, the magic at Thimble Rock will evoke feelings of nostalgia, romance and the yearning to explore. Here you will be surrounded by public lands. The area offers a host of nearby activities with accommodations designed for multi-day stays. There is ample parking adjacent to the A-frame and enough room for full size vehicles to park and turn around. Trailers are NOT allowed. My interaction with guests is schedule dependent. However I typically make myself scarce unless I'm needed. In which case I do my best to always be available by phone. In addition to the resources found on our site you will find a house manual at the onsite for specific operations or instructions.
As you might have guessed the neighborhood is quite rural. There are typically miles between homes and other than a yurt on the property there are no other structures. Highways connect various small town across western Colorado and Utah. Unless you are traveling deep into the backcountry 2-wheel drive is all you should need. Some dirt/gravel roads are passable with 2wd however it is dependent on the season so always check road conditions first. Again during the winter months 4wd is required.

About the host

I am native to this area and came up in the mountains and canyons of this great state. I don't plan to leave anytime soon. I respect all people and all points of view (mostly!). I thrive on fresh air, the outdoors and l love a good sweat. Traveling is a passion, at home or abroad. I have trekked through the Rockies, Andes and in between. I have gotten lost more than once. I like beaches, tides and gritty little mountain towns. For me it's all about people and the places they live. How they survive and how they enjoy!
Why they chose this property
Throughout history triangle homes have been built around the world and fashioned in the traditions of their builders. From Europe to Asia the A-frame has left its mark. Still today the modern A-frame continues to impress in a way few structures can.
Thimble Rock point began with and a location I discovered some 10 years ago in a small clearing between the Juniper and Pinon pine. A truly magical place with a horizon that will leave you speechless. I and one other builder began this project in September 2020 at the peak of the pandemic. This was the start of Thimble Rock Point.
I'm a builder and farmer but an artist at heart. I've dreamt of a structure in the canyon for over a decade and it took a pandemic to finally make it happen. I teamed up with a friend and by default the remoteness offered ideal social distancing. When the world stopped, we go to work.
We realize every guest is different but at Thimble Rock you pick your itinerary. If you’re looking to trek up mountains or explore hidden canyons then we can help. If you’d rather take a beautiful drive to a nearby vineyard and enjoy a sunset dinner to round things out, we can also help. Western Colorado is full of unique opportunity, our goal is to lead you to it.

For those who prefer a little direction exploring the area, Gateway Canyons Resort is a good resource just 15 miles to the west. They offer a range of activities and best of all you don't need a room to experience the resort. In fact most of the resort is open to the public. The Auto museum is one of the most impressive private collections in the world and definitely worth a visit. The Adventure center is a great resource for anything outdoors. Hiking, biking, archery, clay pigeons, rock climbing and horseback riding. Whether you’re interested in primitive rock art or trial conditions they will be able to help. Explore on your own or book a tour, it’s entirely up to you.
The resort also offers a full spa so if you need a little extra pampering. To book a reservation just call the spa in advance.Helicopter tours have resumed again, inquire at the main desk for details.
