My wife and I have stayed at numerous VRBO’s both domestically and abroad and this is the first time we have written a less than five-star review. There are a few items which elevate a short-term rental to the five-star level: Not asking for drivers licenses immediately upon reserving the unit Providing the unit address prior to 24 hours – so family and friends can determine where you are and plan accordingly Not asking when you plan to check into the unit – we paid, in advance, for a 3:00 PM arrival, why do the owners need to know when we plan to arrive? Furniture at least at the IKEA level (though, in fairness, the king size bed was comfortable) A bathroom window that opens Disclosures: the unit is next to the El train which is clearly audible in the bedroom, there is no elevator, and the winding staircase is difficult to navigate with a suitcase, this is an OLD building and, except for the hardwood floors, has not been remodeled. It was, however, clean. Welcoming documentation: nearby restaurants, transit stations, things to do, house rules, snacks, map of the area, etc. A chair in the bedroom Two luggage racks (not one) A dozen hangers (not five) An electronic lockbox (not a difficult to operate mechanical one) A keyring instead of a loose key Medium quality towels – and lots of them Needless to say, this VRBO had none of the above and thus earns a one-star rating from us.

The Worst Experience I’ve Ever Had
This was the absolute worst experience I have had with a rental. I have rented through VRBO many times and have never had so many issues as I had with this. To begin, we only stayed in the property for all of 5 hours due to the fact that when we went to lay down we noticed there were stains on the bed which smelled of urine. When contacted, the host said they would contact their cleaning staff to send out fresh linens. However, we waited from 6PM to 8:30 PM with no response and no fresh linens and were forced to find other accommodations unless we wanted to sleep on the floor. The host did not respond until the following morning (12+ hours later) asking if we would be willing to return to the property. Mind you, the issue was not fixed still and they said they would again send someone out with fresh linens as they had said the previous night and failed to do so. At this point, my boyfriend and I had already made new accommodations 20+ minutes from the rental and did not want to move back as we could not trust that it would be clean. When asking for a refund/resolution the host said they were “speaking to their business partner” which took them all day (over 12 hours!!!) to get us a response in which they just sent us the cancellation policy for another siteand not VRBO. Then sent us the correct link. So they do not even know who/where their rental is going through. VRBO has also failed to assist us with the issue. No refund issued. We did not stay in the rental. Disgusting!!!
