We arrived late in the night (around midnight) for check-in after a very long distance drive.
As we entered the street looking for the property to check-in, there was a person walking around with a large trash bag - appeared collecting things (that late night). That person went and stood right near the property (or perhaps on the driveway itself), that we were supposed to pull into for check-in, right around the same time we arrived.
While we were confused on whether to pull into the driveway or not (while that person is standing there), we drove a step further to make a drive around and come back to the property after sometime hoping that the person would leave by then and we can enter the property. To our shock we then noticed a few cars on the street parked on both sides of that small neighborhood street that would not let our car pass through easily. As we were waiting in the car thinking a bit there was another car waiting behind ours and it just passed us impatiently and joined the group in the front stopping now right in the middle and completely blocking the street. There were quite a few people in the group, some inside cars, some outside, some sitting in car with doors open. From my brief observation it appeared they are involved in some suspicious/unusual activitities (certainly appeared not safe/appropriate for family). All of this happening just about 2 properties away from the rental property we booked.
With all things happenning there, we felt quite unsafe to stay there any longer (to avoid drawing their attention toward us) and quickly turned around and left the area.
The next morning I called VRBO and reported the incident and requested for a refund. VRBO said I need to talk to the owner myself and that they would not facilicate this. As they were the once been an intermediary in processing the booking I seeked their facilication for the cancellation request as well. They accepted they will send communication to the owner and would get back to me. Two days passed and I did not hear anything from VRBO. So, I called them on the third day for an update on my request of cancellation and refund. They said that customer has to contact and work it out with the owner themselves. I had go over my communication with their previous agent all over again and the new agent completely ignored all that and repeated over and over again that they do not facilicate this mediation.
