My husband and I are semi-retired educators. I taught Algebra for 27 years at a Middle School in Minnesota and my husband still teaches online courses in Cardiovascular Engineering with multiple Universities. 16 years ago, we decided to start spending our summers cruising the Inside Passage of Alaska. By accident, we found a remote property on Mitkof Island south of the small fishing village of Petersburg (population 3,360) on the shores of Frederick Sound where we built an off-grid cabin. I have never seen such beauty and wildlife in such a small area. The island is surrounded by blue glacier waters, misty fjords, tall waterfalls, snowcapped mountains and glaciers, that is why Petersburg is named "Little Norway". Besides the picturesque scenery, the wildlife is just as plentiful. On the island you will see moose, black bear, occasional brown bear, Sitka deer, bald eagles, wolves, and hummingbirds. The waters of Frederick Sound are the summer feeding grounds to over 500 Humpback Whales. Orca, porpoise, harbor seals, sea lions and sea otter are local residents too. Besides the natural beauty and wildlife, Petersburg offers some of the best salmon/halibut fishing, shrimping & crabbing known all over the world. Did I mention, the famous Stikine River is across Frederick Sound with glaciers, hot springs & more salmon fishing. If you are an outdoor enthusiast you will experience all the fishing, hunting, kayaking, boating, biking, & camping you can handle on the island of Mitkof because most of the island is Tongess National Forest. We loved the area so much that we retired early, built a home in the city limits of Petersburg on Wrangell Narrows and moved here permanently. Now, we want to share the beauty of Alaska's Inside Passage with everyone.
Why they chose this property
If you want to experience Alaska, Petersburg has it all on Mitkof Island. You have world-class fishing for salmon/halibut, hiking/biking trails, kayaking, whale watching, wildlife & birding viewing, glacier tours with waterfalls & fjords, and Stikine River excursions to glaciers & hot springs. The town of Petersburg is a small fishing village with a population of 3,360 with no stop lights on the island. While visiting the quaint little town called "Little Norway", you will experience on the main street a local fish market, Coastal Cold Storage, that serves the best seafood Alaska has to offer, down the street you will find the local coffee fix at Glacier Express and the best homemade dishes for breakfast/lunch at Salty Pantry near the Middle Harbor. While walking around the city of Petersburg, you will observe a Viking Ship, Son's of Norway Hall, Devil's Thumb, Tlingit Totem Poles and 3 Picturesque Harbors. Our property is located 7 miles out of Petersburg on Wrangell Narrows so you will be able to relax and watch the ships roll into Petersburg. We are located between the city activities of Sandy Beach, Outlook Whale Observatory, Raven's Roost Hiking Trail & Eagle Roost Park to the outdoor adventures south of the island located in the Tongess National Forest, including Blind River Rapids 10 minutes away to the best King/Coho salmon fishing from the shores, hiking trails such as 3 Lakes Loop and Blind Slough fish hatchery. Our property provides a quiet sanctuary with all the comforts of home including a hot tub overlooking Wrangell Narrows to help you relax between your daily Alaskan Adventures.
What makes this property unique
The prow front 1-Bedroom condo is a favorite place to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee with 180 degree view of the water. You have a full kitchen to cook up your catch of the day or seafood you purchased from the local fish market. The living room is an open floor plan to the kitchen with leather seating, Murphy Bed, TV and large dining table. The bathroom offers plenty of space to get ready in the morning and a luxurious rainfall shower. The bedroom has a queen size poster bed, dresser, chest of drawers & 2 night stands with an entrance to the hot tub on the outside patio (sleeps 2-4). The windows provide amazing views of the water for scoping yachts, fishing vessels, eagles, birds, porpoise, sea otter, Sitka deer, and occasionally a moose.
