About this property
Holiday apartment Tortorella for 1 - 6 persons with 2 bedrooms - Holiday apartment
ED Refnr. 727544
On the edge of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park in the Campania region, province of Salerno, the property is surrounded by a green mountain landscape with traditional agriculture and livestock farming, overlooking the Golfo di Policastro on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The two lovingly restored stone houses are located 670 metres above sea level in the municipality of Tortorella, on the border with Basilicata.
The terrain with meadow, vegetable garden and holm oak forest is terraced with stone walls; each accommodation unit has its own access and terraces with panoramic views over the mountains and valleys of the Golfo di Policastro and the sea on the horizon.
In the neighbouring holm oak forest, a wooden stilt house invites young and old to play, exercise, laze around, read or stargaze.
Below the holiday flat in the same building is a smaller flat with separate access and its own terrace. In front of the entrance area is a small utility building with a wood store and laundry room, where you will find a washing machine, tumble dryer, iron and ironing board.
There is a secure parking space for your car.
Three terraces offer plenty of space either in the sun or in the shade. Deckchairs, dining table and chairs are available. There is a barbecue on a natural stone wall and a hammock and swing in the forest. Behind the house there is a holm oak forest with various paths on which you can climb our two local mountains or hike towards the sea.
The approx. 110 square metre flat is spread over two floors (ground floor and first floor). On the ground floor you enter directly into a large kitchen-living room with fireplace, fridge, dishwasher, gas hob with oven and dining area. Plenty of crockery, cutlery, glasses and cooking utensils are available. There is a large living room with a view of the sea. Two sofas can be converted into single beds or a double bed if required.
A hallway gives access to the bathroom with shower and WC, the rear terrace and the stairs to the first floor. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, one with a double bed, the other with two single beds, as well as a small bathroom and a large roof terrace.
The houses are lovingly furnished with traditional and natural materials.
Each holiday home has central heating by gas, wood-burning stove or fireplace, and hot water is generated by solar energy in summer.
Each of the two houses has an outbuilding with washing machine, tumble dryer and ironing board for free use. Logs for fires and barbecues are provided. Bed linen and towels are provided. We are happy to cater for individual requests.
Excursion possibilities: For culturally interested travellers, we recommend excursions to the Certosa di Padula, the largest Carthusian monastery in southern Italy, and to the early Christian baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte, to Teggiano, an old bishop's seat with many churches and the Diozaean Museum, to Roccagloriosa, a Lucanian foundation (around 450 BC) with a small excavation site and a museum.) with a small excavation site and 2 small museums (bronze vessels and gold jewellery), to Velia, a Greek colony with traces of Greek, Roman and medieval settlement history, to the Greek city of Paestum (with three well-preserved temples, city walls and museum), to the Grotta del Romito in Calabria (Stone Age carvings and graves).
The property is located on the south-western slope of Monte Coccuzzo (1387 m) in a small hamlet of the village of Tortorella in the Golfo di Policastro, on the southern edge of the UNESCO-protected Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, on the border between Campania and Basilicata. When visibility is good, you can see the Stromboli volcano on the horizon from the terrace. Especially in autumn and spring, you can watch wonderful sunsets, and on clear nights a magnificent starry sky. At the height of summer, the altitude and the neighbouring holm oak forest offer a pleasant coolness and a welcome change from life on the beach. The neighbours still run a small farm with cows, sheep, chickens and vegetable production, while others still live as shepherds almost as they did 100 years ago and produce sheep's cheese, goat's ricotta and lamb.
The charming village of Tortorella with its spectacular views, grocery shop, bar and post office is around 6 km away, while the coast and the small town of Sapri with its IC railway station are around 25 minutes away by car. Tortorella is perched at just under 600 metres above sea level on a hilltop that slopes down to the Tyrrhenian Sea over olive groves and woodland and is bordered to the west by the deep Bussentino gorge. From various vantage points, the view extends from the sea over the coastal mountains of Calabria, our "local mountain" Monte Cocuzzo, Monte Cervati (1899 m), Monte Gelbison to M. Bulgheria. The dreamy village has largely retained its original appearance: Natural stone houses with decorative portals nestle against the rocky ground, gardens open up into narrow alleyways. Around 300 inhabitants meet up to play cards in Giuseppe's bar or at the post office to collect their pensions, at the weekly market on Wednesdays and in the church square on Sundays. The municipal area covers altitudes between 50 and 1480 metres with different vegetation zones that still provide pasture for shepherds at any time of year. A spur road not shown on official maps, the so-called Tortorella - Mare, connects the village with the coast in 15 minutes by car. In the centre of the gulf near Villammare, you will find typical Italian beach life with sun loungers for hire and bars in high summer, while the cliffs near Acquafredda in the south and Scario in the north are lined with small bays with crystal-clear water, some of which can only be reached on foot or by boat.
The landlady lives on site and is happy to help with information, especially about hikes.
Bettina is an experienced hiking guide and also offers tours on request.
