Pros: Communication with Host was great and he was very helpful and nice. Property was equipped with everything needed and check in was easy.
Cons: Area around was a little sketchy but it looks like it may be in the process of being renovated. Property is older and floors and a little noisy.
The manager was beyond helpful and accommodating to us, so thankfulfor all he did. The house has such an amazing old and historic vibe and decor. There are beautiful music posters, art, and various items that embodies Chicago's history throughout the house. You can visually see the city's many contributions to music and art throughout time. The love for this city and preserving its history is packed into this hidden gem.
The house was good for our needs, we enjoyed it, and the communication with the host (Henry) was excellent, plus he was always available and expedite in helping us. We were able to enjoy our time in Chicago at this property!
The microwave had a dirty tray, so we washed it before use it. Also the kitchen countertop needed a cleaning before using. And there was many of those places with hidden dust around the house (behind the table, for example) - I understand Chicago's dirt is hard, but it was not nice to find it.
However, it was overall a great stay, a courteous and helpful owner, and a rich house to visit with so many beautiful pieces of furniture!
The neighbors were quiet most of the time (except for one night - very loud music), and you can park and feel safe.

It was "okay"
My husband, his dad and brother stayed at the property for a weekend. He says the place "wasnt very comfortable" in the sense that other than the front porch, there werent to many places inside the house where they could all be together and hang out.
The neighborhood - which the owner has zero control over - was definitely not one in which my husband would have felt comfortable bringing me or my kids to....i guess we can leave it at that.
We were very appreciative of the price we paid for the place given the outrageous pricing elsewhere, but you will pay for that when it comes to peace of mind in your surroundings.....
I booked in January for a stay in June. VRBO had a hiccup: the app sent me all my confirmation emails, but did NOT send the reservation to Henry, the host. Our party of 5 arrived only a couple hours after I contacted Henry (the first he'd heard about us), expecting that we would have to find other accommodations on a super-busy graduation weekend. BUT, Henry and his housemate quickly tidied up and made other arrangements for THEMSELVES, in order to allow my elderly parents, my son (who came from Amsterdam), my spouse and myself to stay in their home for 5 nights(!). Henry was absolutely lovely and such a generous, helpful host. And we were so grateful not to have to scramble last-minute for other accommodations. The house is an old, historic home with a lot of personality. The creaking hardwood floors and narrow staircases did not bother us one bit. On the contrary, we found it all very charming. Others have commented about the neighborhood, so I feel it's important to add that we walked all over the area and we NEVER felt unsafe. In fact, we met several of Henry's neighbors on the first night and found them to be extremely friendly and welcoming. This property is not fancy, but it was safe, comfortable, and affordable. Henry went out of his way, at the last minute, to make sure we had an enjoyable stay. We are so grateful for his generosity and help during such an important trip. :)

Filthy
The property was absolutely filthy. Crusty spots on floor, dustbunnies, used straw on piano, toilets not cleaned, beard trimmings on sink, dirty kitchen utensils/microwave, old food in fridge, dirty shower curtain, possible poop splatters on bathroom cabinet, beard trimmings on sink, stained sheets with hairs, etc...38 pictures taken and supplied to VRBO. We had to find a hotel last minute. Seller refunded in full the same night. He admitted to thinking we we coming the next day instead of our scheduled day. May have been lack of preparedness or just the state of the home in general. We weren't sure, but weren't willing to stick around to find out.

Response from VrboOwner on 18 Apr 2024
I'm sorry that you had a difficult experience Russell. I did make a mistake and thought that your arrival was the following day. As a result the house was not cleaned per my standards. These things were completed: All beds were made with fresh sheets, bathroom, kitchen and floors cleaned by me in a mad rush to provide the house to you on time. My only other option for me under the circumstance was for me to cancel your reservation. Perhaps I made a mistake by not doing that for your booking.
There are a few things that you did not mention that I'd like to point out. You requested on the morning of your booking to arrive 2 hours earlier than the check-in time. Despite seeing me as you were leaving, you lied and said you had appointment and would return later without telling me your concerns. When I was finally able to reach you after messages from VRBO saying you had reported that you couldn't get into the property (another lie), I issued a full refund to you immediately without further questions and expressed my sincere apologies for the situation. It was my mistake and once again I apologize very sincerely that I placed you in the difficult situation.
For others who may read this and have questions, I hope you will read other reviews that are listed here for this property and on other platforms where you can find the listing like AirBNB. This review is not an accurate reflection of how I regularly delive my property. If you have questions I hope you will ask. The space is a very nice place to stay and the greater majority of people stayimg have found it a great value.
We were getting our daughter set up in her apartment for grad school. This was just what we needed. It was a lovely place. I only wish we could have heard Henry sing.
