About the host
Hosted by Susan Stoddard
We are a couple of art historians and professors from the U.S. who have spent many years involved in an archaeological excavation on a southern French medieval site in the region. Because we were spending 6 weeks every summer, plus sabbaticals, working with colleagues and students , we bought a simple house for us and our two boys (now grown up) to live in while in France. We normally live in Brunswick, Maine where, among other things, we raised sheep, taught at the university, worked on historic preservation, and the local Land Trust.
Why they chose this property
Because we fell in love with this old stone "peasant's house" as we like to call it (not a château!) with stone arches, stone floors, a groined-vaulted chamber, wooden shutters, and vestiges of the barn in the garage, the pigeoniere (dove cote) in the walls, we think you will too! There is a pleasant kitchen with a table to gather around, a comfortable living room with two couches and three bedrooms, along with an attic office that has two small (extra) beds. Listening to the many birds and watching them fly down the Impasse, sitting under the stars at night on the terrace and smelling the fragrance of the nearby flowers are gentle pleasures of being here.
Here, in this village and its surroundings, we have come to love the olive groves, the vineyards, the pomegranate trees and rosemary bushes, the horses, the old stone walls and the way the breezes can cool the heat in summer.
And best of all, it is the perfect place from whence to explore the beauties and delights of Provence and Languedoc (Occitanie) as it is quite close to Nîmes. The sense of the past melds gracefully with the present
What makes this property unique
You can walk to the bakery for your morning croissants or take your evening stroll, after a day of sightseeing or going to the beach, find the bench on the hill above the village to watch the sunset and enjoy some local rosé! There are marked trails for hiking right out of the village and the preserved foundations of a pre-Roman or Celtic oppidum (fortified town) are just a short walk up to the hill above Nages-et-Solorgues. Shop at the regional marchés and cook at home, or enjoy the area's restaurants and pizzerias. The Mediterranean is about 40 kilometers and the Cevennes Mountains about the same distance. Arles, Aigues-Mortes, Nîmes, the Camargues, Avignon, St. Remy, Sommières, le Pont du Gard, Uzés, St. Guihlem and many other places are an hour's drive or less away. You can rent a bicycle and ride along the ' Voies Verts' (greenways) for many kilometers and not worry about any car traffic, or go to the beach and rent a lounge chair and umbrella and spend the day by the sea. Wander around the magnificent historical sites and museums of Arles (30 minutes away) and check out the wonderful shops there as well. "Walk the walls", the ramparts and towers of 13th century Aigues-Mortes. Ride a single-gauge steam-powered railway in the mountains. Visit the large ornithological park in the Camargues where you can get close to wild flamingoes. Visit a winery. Endless possibilities!
