About this property
Private and Quiet with Panoramic Ocean Views – Sugar Bird Cottage
Our secluded cottage has amazing, panoramic views of the British Virgin Islands and the East end of St John, near beautiful Coral Bay, St. John, USVI. Perched above Johns Folly Bay, the wrap-around decks on the top floor provide space for outdoor dining and lounging, all with unbeatable views! The gentle trade winds make the private decks a perfect place to relax, day or night, and watch the amazing sun and moon rises. The star gazing is fantastic.
Large picture windows provide unobstructed views. Screened louvers are cleverly placed below the windows, so the comfortable breeze can naturally cool the cottage without obscuring your view.
The kitchen has a stovetop, oven, full-sized refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, and all the supplies you’ll need to feel at home. Also upstairs is a dining area, a half-bath, a couch and smart TV. FAST Starlink internet/wi-fi throughout the cottage.
On the lower level is the air-conditioned bedroom with an ensuite bath and a shower big enough for two – with a view! There’s also a covered deck off the bedroom, and a third, lower deck perfect for sunbathing or lounging in privacy. Both lower levels are accessed with exterior stairs, typical in most Carribean homes.
Sugar Bird Cottage is a tranquil escape perfect for relaxing on the quiet side of St. John. Yet it’s only minutes from Miss Lucy’s restaurant, Pizzabar in Paradise, and Calabash Market. 10 minutes to Coral Bay’s restaurants, bars, shops, and equipment rentals. The cottage is less than 1 mile to one of the best beaches on the island, Salt Pond Beach, and the scenic Ram Head trail. A few minutes further brings you into the National Park with more beaches and hikes to explore – the most secluded on the island.
The cottage is located near the end of a quiet, private, paved road. No traffic noise or bumpy, steep, rocky roads that require 4-wheel drive. Sugar Bird is a peaceful getaway – surrounded by nature, the sound of the ocean below, and expansive views of the Caribbean Sea dotted with islands.
Please note that there are a few flights of steps down to the cottage and decks, so mobility is required.
Need two more rooms to accommodate a larger group? We also own a 2 bedroom, 2-1/2 bath cottage next door. Both are very private, but close enough to walk between the two. See photos for an aerial view of both properties. The VRBO link is: https://www.vrbo.com/2578721

The view was spectacular, sunrises were amazing, it was extremely private, and so quiet! The rental included everything we needed...for cooking, relaxing and going to the beach! It was so nice to have a grille. We cooked our meals on the grille every evening. The outdoor shower was so nice for cleaning off the sand when getting back from the beach. The only thing that could potentially be an issue for some renters is that the wifi/cell coverage was spotty at best...which did not bother us at all, since we were there to get away from the busyness of life. We would absolutely recommend Sugarbird cottage to anyone looking for a great place to stay when vacationing at St. John!
We had a wonderful stay at Sugar Bird. The property was close to the ocean with amazing views, a cooling sea breeze and the lovely sound of waves crashing. It was very relaxing. The outdoor shower was delightful and the privacy of the home made us feel that we were the only ones in the area. The host and property manager were both very responsive and helpful to answer questions and help out. The unit was a perfect size- for the most part we lived on the outside decks. The bedroom and living area are on 2 different levels with outdoor stair case. Getting in and out of the bed is a little bit of a challenge but the bed is very comfortable and the view is relaxing. There are multiple flights of stairs from the parking area down to the cottage. It is a perfect piece of paradise.
Great place to stay close to Coral Bay! Very quiet with amazing views. The host was very easy to communicate with. Highly recommend if you're looking for a relaxing getaway.
Nice property. Definitely checked off a bucket list item. Next time might stay closer to Cruz Bay.

Sugar Bird is on the quiet side of the island. It’s one of the things we love about the cottage, and why our guests choose it. We are very clear about the location in the description. Cruz Bay is on the busier side of the island.
I’m glad you liked the cottage and gave high marks for everything else, but feel it is very unfair that you gave us an overall 3 star review only because you didn’t like the location you selected.
We loved our time at sugar bird cottage. We were there on our honeymoon and the location, view, and vibe of the house was outstanding. Jennifer was extremely helpful and prompt in answering all of our questions about the island and local places to eat or shop. The beaches were all pristine and easy to access. It was an amazing time and we’d highly recommend it!

Thank you Matt! We're so glad you and Cynthia enjoyed St. John and we're excited to welcome you back next year. Thanks for your kind words about Dena - we feel very fortunate to have her.
Our stay was memorable in all good ways - a cute cozy house, nicely furnished, with the most incredible sea view! Our only bit of advice - the bed was tricky to get in and out of, though very comfortable once in.
What a wonderful stay. The place was well equipped for our needs and offered a spectacular view! It felt like we were staying in a tree house…and it was amazing. You can’t beat the views from this property. Great spot for folks looking to refresh and recharge. Highly recommend!!

Thank you Timothy - I'm so glad you enjoyed your time on St. John! We love our little spot away from the crowds. I hope you can visit again!
I know this island is still under repair from the hurricane that hit a while ago, but the island is still beautiful, the people are amazing, and this place was very peaceful. I would definitely rent this place Again.
We really loved our stay. The Coral Bay location was wonderful, but the views from the deck were the magic. Every morning and evening we would enjoy the vistas. Great beaches were nearby.
Both the owner, Jennifer, and her local manager were very responsive and helpful.
10 out of 10!

I’m glad you enjoyed your time at Sugar Bird! I appreciate your kind words about Dena - I’ll pass them along to her. I hope you can make it back to St. John! :)
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at this charming cottage. The wraparound porch hexagon nestled into the side of a hill with gorgeous views and a cozy living space, gave us a place to relax and rejuvenate in privacy. Hermit crabs with shells of many colors and sizes quickly scramble and hide when going up and down the steps. We hold many great memories from our stay at Sugar Bird ☀️

Thank you Vivian! I'm glad you had a good time at Sugar Bird. I love to watch the crabs :) I hope you can make it back to St. John!
The place is small and there are a lot of stairs! But the views are stunning and there is everything you need for cooking basic meals, outdoor sunbathing, open air showers, and a very complete guide for things to do and places to go on the Coral Bay end of the island.
The bedroom is a bit awkward with the bed up several uneven steps, but it's quite comfortable.
Overall a great stay!

Thank you Martha - I'm glad you had a great stay! I hope you can return to St. John again. :)
We had a lovely week here! The views were amazing and we enjoyed the privacy. We had everything we needed and loved being away from it all. We didn't mind the (sometimes precarious) drive from Coral Bay and the Cruz Bay on the busier side of the island. Well worth it in exchange for your own private paradise. Parking was a bit of a challenge, especially when the neighboring guest didn't park in a way that allowed us to use the turnaround area. Outside of that, it was perfect for what we wanted!
Located on the QUIET side of the island. Lovely. Don’t necessarily stay here if you love Cruz Bay but we hate Cruz Bay so this was perfect for us. This is not a negative but the bed is slightly difficult to maneuver if you are old or have knee/back problems, etc. And ceiling so low over bed, there can’t be a ceiling fan. There is air conditioning but we never had to use it. The kitchen is reasonably sparse but adequate for basic cooking. Total peace and quiet and a fabulous view.
Great stay out on the East end of St John. Had some considerable excitement with Hurricane Fiona, which hit us right at the end of the stay. Jennifer was super excellent at communicating with us during that period and with helping us extend our stay when the ferry and airport closed. In the end, we only ended up getting a couple of days of tropical storm conditions, and all was well.
As for the rest of the vacation and the cottage - spectacular. Just like the pictures show, only in 3D

I'm glad you enjoyed the cottage and St. John before the storm hit! Thanks for your help with getting everything secure. I hope you can visit again!
We loved the location - secluded and on the "quiet" end of St John. View from the home was gorgeous.
Was very warm time of year when we were there - bedroom is air-conditioned with window unit but attached bath was not. Also was asked to run a/c only when we were there due to high electricity cost. Didn't know this until we got there.
Stairs between the two levels was outside if that matters to you - not easily discernible from the pictures.
Great food close in Coral Bay - Miss Lucy's, Pizzabar, Johnny Lime's BBQ and Limeout in the Bay were all awesome.

I'm glad you enjoyed the location - we love our peaceful end of the island! I've updated the listing to make it clear that the cottage is built in the typical Caribbean style with the stairs outside - thanks for the tip. I hope you can return to St. John!
Wow, what a view! This is our 6th trip to St. John and we have rented a home each time but the view from Sugar Bird topped them all. Sitting on the deck each morning watching the sun rise over the islands of the BVI was wonderful. The cottage as described is cozy but met our needs. The galley kitchen had all the necessary accessories for meal preparation and the deck on the grill was handy. We love the location for quick trips to Salt Pond and hiking Rams Head. If you don't like stairs you should avoid the property as it is a bit of climb back to the parking area and the bedroom on the lower level also requires outdoor stairs to access. The unique platform bed affords wonderful views of the islands but also is more of a challenge than a normal bed for those middle of the night trips to the bathroom. Both the host and the on island property manager were available and responsive. We loved our stay and wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

Thank you Bryan! We're so glad you enjoyed Sugar Bird. We'd love to have you back anytime!
Very cool little property, with a great view! This is located in a very quiet part of the island, while you certainly are out there you can easily be clear back to Cruz Bay in 20 minutes. Definitely ideal for two people, and with the shower set up and glass bathroom door, you should be very comfortable with the other person, We found the hot water to be a little limited, it tended to run short at the end of a fairly brief shower, but not terrible it is 80 most days on the island. AC is limited to the bedroom. But on most days there is enough breeze there that we didn't care. Definitely not ideal if mobility is limited as there are several flights of stairs in the property. Several excellent restaurants within 5 minutes driving in Coral Bay, and there is an awesome boat charter, FlyAway, that is in Coral as well. All in all we would absolutely repeat if we are back this way again!!
Right after we got married, we flew in and came to sugar bird. A dream come true! It was incredible, we loved every single detail! The location, the view, the windows, the conveniences provided, down to the cute hermit crab homes around it! The location was perfect on the island, we felt safe and comfy, with easy access to everywhere we drove to. Not only were there beach supplies offered, but even binoculars for the view! We loved the three levels of the structure, it felt like an adorable tree house to run around in. The huge bed was super cozy as well, big plus. The grill and outdoor shower was a nice touch as well. We really appreciated the binder with recommendations and any tips and tricks for the island, the TV was super nice, and we even enjoyed the radio CD player there. Bottom line, we were completely infatuated with every aspect of this place, a place we will always look back on and cherish from the first half of our honey moon!

Thank you Shane - I appreciate your kind words!! I'm so glad you were able to spend part of your honeymoon on St. John. We'd love to have you back sometime!
The view from the property is even better in person.
This is not Cape Cod or the Outer Banks. This is heaven.
No constant motor boats or airplanes overhead. Bring inexpensive dry goods in your carry on, buy some shrimp at the Calabash Market, and sit on the deck overlooking the beauty. Easy workable kitchen, an indoor shower with windows which overlook Coral Bay, and make an evening trip to Miss Lucy's.
You are on the eastern end of the island, a 25 minute drive to the much nosier Cruz Bay. That's good. All the north shore beaches are majestic. Great rental, great setting, great vacation, and, this is a review after the airlines lost our luggage en route. Rent a 4 wheel drive jeep, you'll feel safer. A good co-pilot helps with driving on the left.
