About Penelope Middelboe
A genuine family home. We clubbed together as a family and bought it as a ruin. Children have grown up here and each year we rush to book our precious weeks under the lemons.
Penelope Middelboe purchased this House in 1999
Why Penelope Middelboe chose Melegís
It's real Spain. It's in a beautiful part of the country. You can ski in the winter, mountain walk in the spring and autumn, and chill in the heat of the summer. The heat is never unbearable and yet always guaranteed. The village is high on hills above a dam and cooled by irrigation water from the Sierra.

A friend of mine invited me to spend a week in August with her and 4 of her girlfriends at Dos Hermanas. After seeing photos of the property I didn't have to think twice about it. I have to say, actually visiting Melegis and staying at Dos Hermanas exceeded my already high expectations. Not only is the property comfortable, spacious and well-equipped with all the conveniences you could need, the location is just beautiful. The mountainous scenery is truly sumptuous and there are plenty of walks you can go on to take it all in. Although not a driver myself, the heart of Granada was easily reachable by car should you wish to go sight-seeing; the Mercadona supermarket is closer still and even the local shop is well stocked with basics as well as fresh fruit and vegetables if you wish to spend more time simply wandering around the village, cooking and relaxing in the villa itself. I honestly can't recommend this place highly enough. Thank you so much for a truly wonderful holiday.
Thanks so much Lorna for writing, I really appreciate it. So glad you enjoyed the combination of mountainous/rural with the fascinating city of Granada, Alhambra etc. And pleased to see Marie's local shop and the Mercadona supermarket (a short car journey away) getting a mention. We're going out there this Saturday and can't wait. It's still warm and relaxing in October!
Charming house with great outdoor space
Our family of four (children aged 11 and 15) had a lovely time staying at Dos Hermanas this August. The house has a 'rustic' feel to it and was everything one would expect from a traditional Spanish village house. Lovely garden and swimming pool and the children adored feeding the cats that become your 'holiday pets' for the duration of your stay! Great base for exploring the area - only 30 minutes drive to Granada and La Alhambra (a 'must see'). There's a water park in Granada which the kids loved. We managed a couple of local walks in the hills despite the 30+ temperatures - great views. I had been worried it might be too hot at night but a combination of the traditional build of the house and the multiple fans supplied made for a good night's sleep. Would definitely recommend.
Thanks so much Lisa. So glad you had a great time even with Spain experiencing unprecedented heat. The Lecrin Valley was prized by the Romans, then fought over by the Moors and Christians, all because of its uniquely temperate climate - no frosts so orange and lemon trees grow and no searing temperatures. Our cats will have loved your children to play with so please thank them especially.
Exactly as described
Reading the description of this property you picture a gem. A perfectly renovated typically Spanish hideaway. Which is exactly what it is. Having booked the Thursday EasyJet flights into Granada we had spend time exploring the city and the Alhambra and escaped on the Saturday to the tranquility of Melegis. We spent a lovely week relaxing in all the properties hideing holes and swimming in the salt water pool (perfect no chlorine = no prickly heat rashes.) The kitchens and bedrooms are well appointed with everything you need - everything has been thought of for you so relaxing was easy. There is a small local shop but you need a car to reach the supermarket 10 minutes drive away and I'd recommend the bread shop instead of the delivered bread. My husband and his friend had a great time trail running every morning exploring the rambling hills of the Siera Nevada but for the rest of us the short fruit lined walks to the castles described by Penelope proved enough exploring in the August heat. The whitewashed village itself is tranquil with narrow streets and it's old irrigation system. The restaurant has good food and lovely views. The house is a perfect escape from today's fast moving lifestyle. Dos Hermanas gets a big thumbs up from all of us.
Thank you! We love it and it's great that you did too. Yes, it's very convenient to have flights to Granada from London back again. Granada is a great place to explore. Glad the newly tiled, non-chlorine pool is going down a treat.
Relaxing home from home
Well equppped, pretty garden, lovely pool. Accommodation homely but fine. Fabulous second floor sitting room with views and breezes.
Thanks very much. Glad the breezes are still coming in this hot weather. The Lecrin valley, fought over by the Moors and the Christians for its temperate climate, perfect for lemons and oranges, is a whole lot cooler than Granada if you're looking it up on a weather app. Usually more like Motril on the coast.
Dos Hermanas is a wonderfully stylish and well kept family home in a pretty sleepy village, perfect for a family holiday. We relaxed the moment we arrived and opened the old wooden doors onto the wisteria shaded patio and saw the immaculate big and beautiful garden and pool. All so much more perfect than we had imagined with the summer house, well tended flowers and fruit trees and gorgeous tree house for wee ones.
The house itself is large, cool and comfortable with excellent beds and bathrooms and a variety of seating areas. Although we were mostly outside and only used the downstairs kitchen which is very well appointed, I enjoyed sitting upstairs on the top floor in the early morning with the windows and shutters flung open to take in the stunning views.
Jesus diligently tended the garden and pool every morning before anyone else was awake, even washing down the lovely sun-loungers and lifting all of the fallen fruit of which there was a copious amount. Plenty of lemons and oranges for drinks! Jesus wife whom I believe cleans Dos Hermanas does an equally thorough job on the house as the interior was spotlessly clean.
Melegis is clean and pretty with a shop and bakery although the friendly 'bread man in a van' delivered our fresh bread every morning about 10am. There are two bars with restaurants only a short walk away. We only had complimentary tapas in one, which was excellent, however the very popular Los Narangos had a varied and delicious menu - and complimentary tapas! Melegis is also very well placed for sight seeing in Andalucia.
So, in summary, after many visits to Andalucia in the past, I think we have found our perfect holiday home away from home.
Penelope, many thanks.
Wow! What can I say? It makes us very happy to see that you get Dos Hermanas the way you do. We love it too. Thank you for taking the time to review in such detail. Penelope
It is absolutely stunning! The nicest part of Spain I have ever visited, mountains, mountains mountains.
This house is nestled in a quiet and remote Spanish town, with the most exceptional views over Granada, sweet little winding streets, quiet, and absolutely perfect!
It's just 20 mins drive from everything you need from a holiday, white sandy beaches, great restaurants and bakery's, hikes, walks, even skiing.
The big house has an upstairs kitchen/living room for great breakfasts with a view where you can keep cool on those hot summer days, as well as a whole kitchen area downstairs, perfect for indoor/outdoor living, BBQ's - preparing salami, salads and olives for lunch. The downstairs kitchen leads on to a patio buzzing with insects sounds, fresh lemons and oranges, and such sweet smells of nature. The garden area grows fresh herbs, lavender, and fresh fruit which you can add to your lovely Spanish lunches.
The poolside is perfect to read and relax. You will even have two sweet outdoor cats to keep you entertained.
The comfortable bedrooms have a little deck where you can really make the most of the views.
I cannot recommend more! (plus close to airport bonus)
Wow. A rather overwhelmed owner. Penelope
Melegis is one of the flatter villages in the Lecrin Valley on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada, 3 km west of the motorway from Granada to the sea. It overlooks the Beznar dam which is 10 minutes walk from the village. Neighbouring villages are Lecrin, closer to the motorway, Murchas, Restabal and Conchar. It's a great place for walking - with Moorish ruins and a hermitage within striking distance. The Alhambra Palace is a MUST, as is the ancient town of Granada. Take a drive to the top of the Sierra Nevada, explore the unique architecture of the Moorish Alpujarras, or lunch on the beach. Swimming is best at Nerja which is quite a drive. Make it a day out and eat paella on the beach. Really worth the effort.
There's a water park at Granada.
Golf: There is an 18 hole golf course half-way between Melegis and Granada and a 9 hole course along side the shore at Motril. Details are in the information book in the house.
