Historic Saban cottage in Windwardside, all amenities only a 2 minute walk away!
This cottage was built in a bygone era (1858) in Windwardside and features stunning views of the blue Caribbean, the misty top of spectacular Mt. Scenery, and the picturesque village below. Within 1-3 min you can walk to 2 grocery stores, 6 restaurants, 3 bars, the PO, a dive shop, 2 tourist shops, 2 churches, and a lovely park with museum. It's been a popular tourist rental for 10 years now, especially with divers as the pick up point is just below.
In 2022 a second separate efficiency apartment of 230 sq ft (22 sq m) was completed adjacent to the original cottage. Peter Hytte can be combined with the main cottage if three couples are traveling together, for example, as a small dive group. The apartment has a fully stocked kitchenette however there's plenty of space to dine and socialize all together in Althea Cottage if desired.
For active travelers who don't need as much space as the main cottage offers, Peter Hytte provides the same views and amenities at an attractive price point.

My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful stay in this comfortable, well situated and historic cottage. Our host, Jeff, was extraordinary, providing an excellent orientation to beautiful Saba and informing us about everything we needed to know to maximize our brief time on the island. His referrals to restaurants and activities were perfect. We look forward to returning as soon as we can!
What a wonderful stay at Althea Cottage on the beautiful island of Saba! Our host Jeffrey was amazing! Helpfully guiding us from initial contact in June, then an unexpected flight cancellation and throughout our stay over Halloween weekend. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing his stories of life on the island. The love and care that he has been put into the cottage is very apparent and you feel at home as soon as you arrive. It was lovely to open the doors to the evening breezes each night after days spent diving & hiking. We look forward to returning for an even longer stay next time.
We enjoyed our stay very much. The cottage had everything we needed and more! Appreciate Jeff and all his knowledge. He was always available to answer questions etc. We loved being able to walk right down to Windward side and surrounding areas. We would stay again for sure!

It was an epic experience amazing charming house! Jeff and Cece and Peddy were amazing and in constant communication. If you ever get a chance definitely visit this island and this cottage!
Althea Cottage was absolutely amazing! It is a historic chattel cottage located centrally within Windwardside village. It is a short walk away from the Busy Bee Bakery, which is a phenomenal place to enjoy breakfast, a snack, or lunch. It is also in close proximity to the grocery store and restaurants. The cottage overlooks the village, and you can also view the sea in the distance from both the right and left. The kitchen is very well equipped with everything you need to cook. The living room is very spacious and comfortable. The bedroom and bathroom are very well furnished. The cottage has the most wonderful patio area with table and chairs and is framed with a beautiful rock garden.Jeff was aa wonderful host! He was there to meet us when we arrived. He provided us a tour of the cottage and answered any questions that we had. He was available during our stay for any additional information that we requested. The people who live on Saba are very environmentally conscious. Jeff upholds and supports this vision and has set up his rental cottage to conserve water and recycle. It was refreshing in my opinion and made me really think about resources such as water and disposables.Saba is an amazing island and it's beauty surpasses much I have seen in the Caribbean. The hiking trails are phenomenal. I highly recommend staying at Althea cottage!
We had a wonderful stay at Althea cottage. Jeff was very friendly and every morning we had a brief chat when Jeff passed by when he started his morning walk and we were sitting on the terrace with our coffee enjoying the first sunshine. The cottage is in the center of Windward site and from there the bakery (daily fresh bread) and supermarket is just across the street. Several good restaurants on walking distance and also close to some marvelous trails. In the cottage everything was there for preparing breakfast/lunch or diner, relaxing chairs to sit inside when it was raining (yes we had some rain),Nice and clean bedrooms.
The people of Saba are very friendly. This location has many fantastic restaurant choices within a short walk.
Our host Jeffery was wonderful. Very helpful. Because he lives next door he's always available.
The cottage was roomy for the 2 of us. WiFi worked great and there's plenty of electrical outlets (American Style 110 volt).
I can say enough nice things about this rental.

Amazing cottage. We canceled our plans in Philipsburg to spend 5 nights on Saba. Great choice! The island is incredible and this cottage in Windwardside was perfect for us. We enjoyed world-class scuba diving with Sea Saba. Easy walk to bakery, markets, bars and restaurants. Near several hiking trails. We did not rent a car and did not need one. Excellent host! Highly recommend!
We arrived on Saba to be greeted by the driver that had been arranged by our host. We were then driven up to the charming village of Windward Side. Please anticipate taking lots of pictures and video.
The host, Jeff was friendly and welcoming, as well as being an oracle of invaluable information on this unique island. He went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed for a relaxing and enjoyable stay. The cottage is like something out of a Hemingway novel. Only wish we could have stayed a bit longer. We would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Saba!

I really enjoyed meeting you folks and earnestly hope you'll plan another but longer vacation on Saba to explore our gem of an island even deeper!
This cottage is top notch. Very comfortable and well located in the heart of Windwardside close to markets, shopping and good restaurants. It has everything you need for a short or long stay. Patio out back right under Mt. Scenery where you can see the clouds over the top of mt. Beautiful garden.
Jeff/owner was very responsive and knowledgeable. Loved talking with him. Great person!
Bedrooms separated by living room and kitchen. Very nice private layout.
Definitely would stay here again!
Thanks to Jeff!!

Three of us came to Saba for the first time, for a diving vacation. We had a great time and Althea's Cottage worked out perfectly for us. The 2 bedrooms with bath were at opposite ends of the house, we had a kitchen with dining, a large living room sitting area and back yard patio area. We were able to use an outdoor clothesline daily for drying our diving attire. The cottage is located with convenient walking access several restaurants, 2 grocery stores, a delicious bakery. and the Swinging Door Bar. We went on 2 hikes which were also within walking distance.
The weather was favorable to keeping the doors and winds open which allowed the tropical breeze to flow through the rooms.
Jeff our host, was very accommodating and help us with any needs or questions.
We all agree it would be nice to return.
Our stay in Saba was spectacular! The cottage is charming, comfortable, functional and ideally located above Windwardside. It was a perfect home base for our daily hiking, and diving activities. We cooked most of our meals and found the kitchen to be well equipped including pots, pans, skillets, utensils, spices, etc. The house is located very close to two grocery stores that we found offered a great selection compared to many other carribean islands that we have visited. The matress was extremely comfortable and the house was never too warm due to a constant breeze. We enjoyed the cool breeze in the evening. The bathroom is functional and even had an ample supply of shampoo, conditioner and body wash. The island, cottage and people we met made me feel as if I had traveled back in tome to a bygone era. The diving was good and the hiking spectacular. We did not rent a car, but probably will on our next visit so that we can explore more of the island. The car rental facility is right down the hill from the house. Be sure to hike to Mt. Scenery, enjoy a dinner at Tropics, visit Saba lace and learn about the amazing history of the "Saba Lace Ladies" who continue to carry on the rich tradition. The island is impeccably clean and we did not encounter one homeless animal (very different from many of the islands we have visited). Jeff is a warm and friendly host who we enjoyed chatting with. I highly reccomend visiting Saba and staying at Althea cottage!

I really enjoyed hosting you folks. Thanks for the descriptive review of the cottage and the island amenities. This will be helpful to future guests.
Althea Cottage is in a perfect location for a trip to Saba. You can walk to everything in Windwardside—grocery store, bakery, restaurants & bars, and the Mt Scenery trailhead. No need for a rental car. Very well appointed kitchen, and the recycling aspect was easily complied with, and you felt like you were doing your part with little to no sacrifice. It is a stunning historic dwelling, and we hope to be back one day to a truly unique Caribbean island. Jeff was an amazing host, and he knows Saba inside and out. Well done, Sir.

About the host
Hosted by Jeffrey Vadheim
I'm Jeff, a retired physician who ran a large B&B in Phoenix, AZ for 10 years. I found Saba on a map when I was 9 and vowed to visit the island one day. I vacationed here 30 times and finally bought one of the homes I used to rent to continue hosting travelers in my second retirement. I have since built a small cottage for myself at the far end of the property so I am available all the time for questions or assistance.
Why they chose this property
Historic from 1858, comfortable, airy, situated on a large property for this island (nearly 1/4 acre) with stunning views from both front and back patios.
What makes this property unique
Best central location for all amenities visitors need in the main central tourist area of the island. A rental car is really not needed, you can walk everywhere and hitchhike to the other towns if you like. The views are strikingly gorgeous out to the ocean on both sides and constant breezes with the many doors open on the cottage mean AC is rarely needed.
