About this property
Palm Desert Homestead Cabin, Best Views in Valley
The “Birdcage” is a cozy, rustic cabin with breathtaking views of the Coachella Valley. Sited high atop the Cahuilla Hills (adjacent to Bighorn Golf Club) and enveloped by the Santa Rosa Mountains, it is only 2 miles from downtown Palm Desert. My aunt and uncle homesteaded this land in 1948 and built the cabin, affectionately known as 'The Bird Cage'. Frequented by movie stars in the 1950s who valued its privacy, it's one of the last homesteads in our area. The Birdcage has one bedroom with a new queen-sized bed, a bathroom with a good size shower, and a living/dining/kitchen room — all with beautiful views. The large patio is perfect for drinking morning coffee while the sun rises over the mountains, gazing at hawks soaring overhead during the day, or watching the Valley below transition from gold to pink as the sun sets behind you. And at night, the sky holds a canopy of twinkling stars.
With its proximity to nature, The Birdcage captures the ambiance of life in the Wild West, yet the restaurants and world-class shopping on El Paseo (the Rodeo Drive of the desert) are just a 5-minute drive down the hill. Sublime and safe, the entrance to the property is secured by electronic gates and flanked by a beautiful stand of date palms.

Terrific views, good weather, proximity to Palms to Pines, Joshua Tree, Anza Borrego, the Palm Springs strip, Coachella, Salton Sea. Privacy, good host, great place to spend some time in the winter.
This is a great 1 bedroom getaway. Short drive to the center of town and all shopping, restaurants etc, but when you get back home you are completely removed from the activity in your own peaceful setting on top of the world. Sunrise coffee has never been so serene.

Amazing getaway for a great weekend! Very peaceful with amazing views, especially at night. Felt very safe and close to everything you should need. Thank you, Birdcage!
Escape the crowds and enjoy the beauty of the desert
This wonderful cabin has all the modern conveniences to make you comfortable but you feel as if you have stepped back in time to another era
We were greeted with a roadrunner on the patio each morning and spent a lot of time just sitting on the deck and enjoying the panoramic views in the day and the city lights and stars at night.

Perfect little cabin in the hills
This is the third time at The Birdcage. It is the perfect little cabin a short distance from El Paseo yet feels like miles away. Beautiful views. Funky quirky cottage with all the basic amenities you need , very comfortable bed, very clean, very private. Easy drive to Palm Springs and the other Coachella Valley locations.

We are happy you enjoyed your return visit with us and
felt like you were coming home. Hope to see you again. Ann
We would have had a perfectly wonderful time relaxing in this lovely little hideaway in the Hills but there are so many nearby attractions we stayed busy the entire time: Joshua Tree, Salton Sea and Salvation Mountain, all of the great shops and restaurants nearby. The time flew and we can’t wait to come back. Thanks, Ann!

I'm so happy you made the most of your stay here. The desert is a wonderful place filled with so many things to do. Yes, the cabin is a special place. Thanks for the review. Ann
This is an awesome place for a Palm Desert getaway. Well stocked with all necessities. Air conditioned for a few hot desert days. Pet friendly! Comfortable bed. Wonderful views. We didn't take advantage of the outdoor gas grill or chimney but great to have them available. Plenty of outdoor seating for meals or relaxing.
We'll definitely visit again! Thanks Ann!

So happy to hear how much you enjoyed your stay. Yes, it's a special
place and we look forward to your return visit in January. Ann
This is the second time we've stayed at Ann's place, "The Birdcage." We love this quirky, unique cabin and it's just perfect for two. But... our favorite part is the 360 degree views where you can watch the sun rise over the mountains in the morning and the sun retreat behind the mountains in the evening. It's location is convenient and at the end of the day it was so nice to return to this little slice of heaven. Thank you for hosting us Ann!

vintage cabin with a wonderful feel
My wife and I stayed a week. We had a great time. The 70 year old cabin is its own conversation piece and the view, especially at night, is incredible. It is located within easy distance of everything Palm Desert and Palm Springs has to offer. If Ann (the owner) suggests someplace to eat, just do what she suggests, no questions asked, you won't regret it. She is a wealth of information and a sweetheart, too. We would stay again if we have a chance.

The Homestead Cabin is a special place and we are pleased to share
it with so many satisfied guests; it really does make us happy to have
others share in this special place rather than just letting it sit there for
our occasional personal guests. We are simply astounded by the
quality of wonderful people who seek us out and take such good care
of the cabin. They are ones who enjoy nature and want a special
experience. Thank you for the lovely review.
Incredible views of the entire valley. Tastefully decorated with Western artifacts. Extremely quite up there. Internet speed is a blazing 235Mbps! Cabin has 3 tons of AC for 500 square feet. Blazing hot water in the shower. We love places like that, and will be fack for sure.

Three tons of AC! No wonder it cools down and heats up so fast. So happy you enjoyed your stay and thanks so much for your help! It's a special place, that's for sure. It makes me very happy to share it. Ann
What a delightful little place this is. And for the owners to entrust its history and solitude as Palm Desert developed around the property is truly remarkable. I bought several of the books the owner have in the house for their guests to read. (The bathroom hand soap truly is deep moisturizing!). 360 degree views. Peaceful, silent, contemplative. We can’t wait to go back!

We're happy you appreciate the history of the Homestead Cabin and enjoyed your stay. We'll welcome you back anytime. Ann
This is a very unique and interesting property. We loved it. The property has been kept in the family since 1948 and has a great history. It is a great example of a homestead. Sitting outside, the birds and plants were very interesting. City lights view at night. Easy access to grocery stores and such. It's like we stepped back in time. Definitely will ask to stay there again when we return to the area.

Your review shows exactly why we continue to have the Homestead Cabin as a vacation rental. It brings me joy to share the cabin and have people enjoy the experience of days gone by. We appreciate too, that our guests take such good care of the cabin; quite amazing. Thanks for staying with us and come again. Ann
Easy communication. Great location. Rustic and simple cabin in the desert, close to the heart of Palm Desert. Coffee at sunrise with stunning views was a highlight of our stay.
This is a wonderful place to stay during your time in Palm Desert. It is perfectly located close to town. The property itself is extremely comfortable with a strong shower and functional layout. The outdoor space is equally well laid out and provides additional space. A great place to get away and relax.
Communication with hosts was easy. Don’t hesitate to stay here.
We are definitely planning a return trip!
This is a charming, cozy, simple cabin with wonderfully expansive views - of the sunrises, the valley, the foothills/mountain ridges, the moonlit nights. We ate breakfasts and dinners on the patio and were out and about during the days. Very good hiking trails up the road. Fresh eggs were a bonus. Thanks!
Little 75-year old house that is superbly well stocked with all the necessities and much more that made our stay very pleasurable. Lots of love and history throughout. Very well stocked with every possible need, something that is unusual these days. We just needed to bring fresh food and nothing else.
View is superb and having the patio area with fireplace, grill, tables and chairs was very welcome for the evenings.
Excellent communication, detailed directions, easy to check in and out.

About the host
Your host
We grew up using this property as our own vacation home. Now we want to share it with other. On the lower property we grow date palms and organic vegetables.
Why they chose this property
You feel worlds away from the congestion of the city. Yet it's only a 5 minute drive to wonderful resturants and shopping. The peace of having wide open spaces and a view of the valley below cannot be beat.
What makes this property unique
It's fun to stay here, relaxing, exhilarating at the same time. You're close to hiking, town and all the amenities of the area, yet in this quiet beautiful setting. The city light view is so spectacular that you won't want to go to bed!! Ask about your dog. Dogs over two years old, well trained are okay. We are dog lovers!
