Great Property
The house is very large and full of couches and chairs for large groups. The kitchen is large and fun to cook in. The location is great, the creek that flows across the property traverses a concrete weir or old crossing that creates a nice waterfall noise effect. The towns people were friendly and we had a great time.

We had such a good time!! It was 3 gals in their 49’s and 50’s hanging out to bake Christmas stuff and act goofy, we felt at home and it felt like being at our grandmas house!! The owners need to keep the house the way it is and never change a thing❤️ such a cozy and welcoming place!!

great stay
I just needed a stop over on a road trip and this place was perfect for me and my dog. The large back yard was a great place to run around after hours of driving.

About the host

Hosted by Mark and Misty McGrady

Host profile image
Mark and Misty McGrady own this home which was Mark's boyhood home. Mark loved roaming in the woods and playing in the creek on the property and hopes you will enjoy the restful setting as well. The house was built by Mark's father in 1957 and extensively remodeled and redecorated in the 1980's after Mark went off to college at Wabash College and law school at Duke University. Mark's stepmother loved carpeting (apparently) so the house is full of it . . . for now. It is likely the house will be redecorated as time allows, but it has good bones and great views of the creek and woods. Misty is a southern girl from Tennessee and a graduate of Austin Peay University with a degree in accounting and business.

Why they chose this property

The small town of Hillsboro, Indiana adjoins the property to the north, but the property is screened by evergreen trees planted 60 years ago. The east fork of Coal Creek loops around the property on the other three sides and approximately a square mile of woods is located across the creek. Although Hillsboro claims to be "The Home of 600 Happy People and a Few Old Soreheads," the population is actually closer to 500. It is big enough to host the Myers Dinner Theatre. The town has a thriving hardware store (owned by members of Mark's family) and the Chatterbox Cafe. If you are interested in old farm equipment, Mark's father had a barn built by local Amish craftsmen which is a museum containing old farm machinery and equipment which can be toured. Wabash College is 20 minutes away, Purdue University is 40 minutes away, and Indiana State University and the University of Illinois are each about an hour away as is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Turkey Run State Park and Shades State Park are both about a half-hour away as is Parke County, the home of the Covered Bridge Festival in October.

What makes this property unique

There are two full kitchens in the home (one on each floor). A private deck/balcony is accessed from the master bedroom, which has its own tub and vanities. The yellow tub, commode and sink that were installed when Mark was a baby are still in one bathroom. Mark's stepmother had a hair salon in the home and some of the fixtures for the salon remain. There is a large back yard between the house and creek which could be the setting for a family gathering. The lower level is open and could accommodate several tables for a party or banquet. The owners have tables and chairs at another nearby property which could be rented for that purpose. The lower level houses a ping pong table and a foosball table as well as shelves lined with books, puzzles, records and games.
