HISTORY, TRADITIONS, CULTURE
Mesagne is a lively town, surrounded by centuries-old olive trees, true sculptures of nature. It is located in the "Terra dei Messapi" (land of the two seas). The Messapian civilization has settled in Salento before the Greeks and Romans and there are many archaeological sites that have been found as evidence of this civilization.
In the center of Mesagne you can visit some important testimonies of this civilization. Mesagne is from a perfectly preserved Swabian Norman castle from the 11th Century dominated, which is today an archaeological museum. Mesagne's walled city, are still clearly visible the gates to the city. Mesagne is rich in beautiful churches with important frescoes and paintings. Everything can be visited by a very active club PRO LOCO, which organizes wonderful guided tours of the city.
In the summer season, the city offers visitors many opportunities for parties, festivals, music and cultural events. Do not miss the "Festival of the Patron Saint" in June and July.
In the summer, the Old Town revitalizes with music events and dozens of typical open-air restaurants, where you can enjoy the fantastic Apulian cuisine at affordable prices.
For cyclists and runners, Mesagne offers the opportunity to cycle on peaceful cycle paths through archaeological sites and along the "Francigena" and "Appia Antica strada Romana", which ends in Brindisi, where the famous columns of the 2. Century are to make fantastic routes.
The welcome guest who arrives in the area, we also recommend not to miss the various events that take place in the area of Salento and the "Della Valle d'Itria". You will be amazed by the traditional festivals. With a colorful sky of light, typical music, musical performances, traditional dances like "Pizzica Salentina" and the famous "Notti della Taranta".
We also recommend to take home a "little piece of Salento", which is condensed in the precious fruits of this land, extra virgin olive oil and wine.
