Problem with Owner/Manager
The photos give a good impression of the property.
Upon arrival, it was clear that someone had eaten at the table after the rental was cleaned. Crumbs on table and floor, sticky tabletop, rotting banana. Nothing major, but it made a poor impression.
Afterwards, we received a bill from the owner/manager for damage to a coffee table on the porch. We had not used or damaged the coffee table in any way. We were fully consumed with preparations for our son’s wedding that weekend. We certainly were not picnicking on the porch.
I can only speculate that the owner depends upon the cleaning crew to report damages. I do know the owner came to the facility the weekend after our stay. Again, speculating, she noticed damage and inquired about it to the cleaning crew. They probably responded that they had not noticed it before. So, we were billed. I objected because we had not used the coffee table. After multiple back and forth communications, to her credit, the owner/manager finally agreed that we would not be billed. However, the owner/manager still feels that we did the damage. For our part, we were honest and up front, and we did not damage the property in any way.
It appears that there is no formal checklist completed by the cleaning crew documenting findings after each and every rental. Since we were the last renters, it was just assumed that any damage or wear must have been our fault. The owner’s follow up after our rental left a sour taste in our mouth.
