About this property

In the heart of Italy!

Above the tiny hamlet of San Giovanni del Pantano lies Gudiolo di Sopra. Set amongst olive trees and lavenders the carefully restored XV century tower and house, with a saltwater swimming pool, enjoys stunning views of distant fields and valleys.
The house is spacious and full of light. In the sitting room, cool breezes pass through the open doors that lead to the garden and tower. The kitchen is fully equipped with an adjoining dining room (for 12). Lunch and dinners are usually served outside (one table seats 6, the other 12). A variety of outdoor seating areas surround the house offering privacy and silence. A loggia by the tower offers a relaxing space to watch the sunset. A lounge area outside the dining room offers the confort of a living room while enjoying the breathtaking views. An organic vegetable garden provides seasonable salads and vegetables and the estate also produces its own biological olive oil. The only little shop in the village offers typical gourmet products from local farmers. Just 1.5 kilometers away, Antognolla Castle overlooks the 18-hole championship golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones J.

Customise your holiday! We can plan each day of your vacation. Every step will bring you closer to the heart of Umbria, its traditions, its history, art and culture.

You can let us guide you through our favourite towns and villages: go to the steep and sleepy town of Spello, taking your time over lunch, and enjoy a leisurely take a slow journey discovering the works of Piero della Francesca, from Arezzo to Urbino.

Or again, stick closer to home: enjoy a morning hunting for wild asparagus or funghis in the woodlands near the house. Learn how to make your own gnocchi with a nonna from the village.

At the end of each day, dinner can be waiting for you in Gudiolo. You can spend the evening drinking Umbrian wines and savoring traditional dishes, whilst planning the following day or expand your knowledge of the art and history you experienced during your day by discussing it at dinner with a local expert.

Rates on request (including breakfast, dinner, transportation in a minibus and pick-up from airport if required).

Why they chose this property

It was during the Eighties that Gudiolo found us. The ‘us’, a family of eccentric nomads trying to plant some roots, convinced that with our sheer determination we could learn how to take care of a garden. Many friends have asked us how we found the courage to start restoration work when each member of the family was living in a different continent. I know now that the most important ingredient in order to embark on such a project is TRUST. And we did plenty of trusting: We trusted the complete stranger who, with a power of attorney, represented us in the buying transaction, trusted the architect who we had never met, trusted every local villager with their invaluable advice and, on several occasions, trusted different water diviners who promised us the next well would be full. It should be said, that our trust was always well placed, although in the case of water it would have been cheaper and more efficient to buy a large stake in San Pellegrino. Eventually, the tower grew, electricity reached us and fireplaces were restored while Nicola was being born in Mexico City, Thomas in Lisbon and Lucas in Zurich. Every year, despite only visiting for a few weeks of summer holidays, we would indulge ourselves in the deceptive feeling of permanence. It was only six years ago, when I decided to move to Gudiolo and live here all year around, that I finally came to understand the real meaning of permanence. Permanence is to wake up each morning, knowing that whatever we need to do can wait, because tomorrow we will still be here. It is to carefully unpack boxes which have circumnavigated the planet several times, including old issues of National Geographic. It is finding the right spot for the 18th century Burmese Buddha and realising that he will never move again. It is like… coming home… an experience that neither my children nor I had ever had before.

What makes this property unique

Set in the heart of Italy, Umbria offers the ideal combination of art, history, stunning landscapes, and superb food and wine. Nearby towns throughout the region house art treasures by Piero della Francesca, Perugino, and other Renaissance masters. Florence and Rome are within
two hours’ drive and Siena, Arezzo, Gubbio, Assisi and Todi can be reached in no more than an hour by car. Perugia is just 20 minutes away and offers a wealth of cultural activities that include opera and the famous Umbria Jazz festival in July. Other spectacular hilltop towns include Cortona, Corciano, and Preggio, the latter with its annual classical music festival. Montone, less than half an hour
drive, attracts international crowds during the Film Festival.
Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis and a World Heritage Site since 2000 should not be missed. The magnificent basilica dedicated to St. Francis and decorated wit frescoes by numerous late medieval painters from the Roman and Tuscan schools, has works among others by Giotto, Simone Martini, and Pietro Lorenzetti.
Wine tasting sessions and tours to the various vineyards and cellars of the most important wineries in Umbria are an easy drive from the property. The beautiful hill town of Montefalco, with its vineyards of Sagrantino and Montefalco Rosso, is a paradise for wine lovers. Less than an hour drive, Montepulciano provides some of the Tuscan best.
