About the host
Hosted by Maria J.
I've been host since 2014 both in private and shared dwellings. I love meeting new people and providing them with a lovely place to stay while on holiday or work. I've lived and worked as a teacher in several overseas countries in Europe and the Middle East as well as in Michigan, Georgia, Texas, and various cities in Florida. Now, I tutor online part-time. My hobbies are spending time with my kitten Bobby, gardening, hiking and walking, bike riding, and watching YouTube documentaries as well as various reality courtroom series.
Why they chose this property
I moved to Gainesville in late 2021 to enjoy an academic smaller town than where I moved from which was St. Petersburg, FL. I lived there for ten years and started hosting there on VRBO and other sites in 2014. I have almost 900 reviews on various short-term rental sites. I love the forests and nearby springs here, the plants (especially bamboo, magnolias, and Spanish moss hanging over the trees) and animals including raccoons, crows, deer, and many birds of the woods, and also the cooler temperatures here than along the Gulf coast.
What makes this property unique
The forested setting, the complex which has a wooden bridge crossing over a creek, and the proximity to nearby shopping and supermarkets (less than 8 minutes on foot, so you don't need a car while here). There are several bus stops outside of the complex, too. The University of Florida is lovely and a must see is the bat houses across from Lake Alice on campus. The 50,000 plus bats that live there fly out every evening around dusk, an event that attracts dozens of visitors nightly. Other fun events are manatee viewing, especially in the winter months, in the nearby springs, kayaking, hiking, visiting Paines Prairie which has hundreds of alligators and also wild horses and bison, and touring nearby artsy small towns such as High Springs, the home of famous Itchetucknee Springs.
