Our family of 6 adults thoroughly enjoyed 2 nights at this lovely home. Easily a 15 minute walk into town and a pretty setting. Comfy beds. Lots of traffic in front of house and unfortunate construction starting at 7 am across street, but otherwise great stay. Definitely not a home for children with so many antiques, breakables and museum quality pieces. Adults will enjoy so many things to look at though. We also loved the pond!
This house is extremely special and so is the town. If you’re wanting and idyllic New England getaway, this is it. The yard and pond feel like a dream, especially at dusk. You can easily walk to Main Street for a cup of coffee from the house. And even the drive to the house, the winding road with colonials on either side, is perfection. My small children had room to run and play outside and found plenty of “secret spots” inside the house. The beds are so comfortable and we had plenty of room as a family of four. The logistics (check in and check out) were a breeze. My only tip would be if you have small kids and you’d prefer they don’t wake up with the sun…bring some black out shades. Amazon has some specifically for travel. My hope is that we get the chance to come back here again and again.
Once a museum, this quaint and charming house is on a lovely pond —we were greeted by a swan and cygnets. Parts of Peter Rabbit were written here, so Thornton Burgess’s books are found in every nook. Charming historical house. Not for rambunctious children but delightful for adults.
We had a lovely time staying here! The house is just perfect and in a great location to walk to everything. Having the pond right outside our door was a lot of fun with the kids including catching our first fish!
They provided everything needed and were at the ready to answer any questions. Hope to be back one day!
This house is exactly what we thought it would be, a quaint antique home in a picturesque setting. My son caught two small mouth bass in the pond and we enjoyed exploring the lower cape. The Heritage museum was a worthy excursion. We only wish that we dedicated more of our road trip vacation to Sandwich!
This house is more than just a vacation rental, it is also an experience. The owners successfully renovated & preserved the original 1756 structure, keeping the American Colonial (three-quarter Cape Cod) architectural style. At one time the house served as the Thornton Burgess museum. He was a famous author who lived here & wrote popular children’s stories about animals/nature (Adventures of Peter Cottontail, Adventures of Poor Mrs. Quack, etc). The interior of the house is well designed, with a blend of antique furnishings/decorations, along with modern comforts/appliances. It was clean & well maintained. The ‘rabbit motif’ appears throughout the house and provides a unique thread of continuity that ties it all together. The kitchen had a large sink, large stove, med. size frig, toaster & coffee maker. All the beds were comfortable & 3 full-size bathrooms were a bonus. A/C & internet worked great. Out back of the house is the tranquil Shawme Lake. There is a table and several benches to relax & enjoy lake view. Our 2 adult kids had fun using the row boat & kayak out on the lake. There were no issues with mosquitos/bugs & the surroundings were very quiet at nighttime.Location is excellent. An easy walk to downtown Sandwich. A short drive to beautiful Town Neck Beach (we recommend). We suggest you watch HGTV show about the house renovation while you are here & don’t be surprised if you actually see a few cottontail rabbits & quacking ducks running around during your stay.
The home is lovely, very functional with 3 full bathrooms. We even watched their HGTV renovation show the first rainy day.
The only problem was being awoken by the fire alarms on multiple nights but the owners have changed them so we would rent this property again. If you call them and don’t hear within an hour text them.
This place is unique, obviously. Every detail stands out, from the furniture and art to the fixtures in the bathrooms and kitchens. The kitchen is a dream and the dining area is just perfection. The book shelves are lined with literature and of course children's books. We decided we were all going to return in the winter so that we could just sit by the fire and read. This whole house welcomes you into its fold. The hosts were fabulous and so responsive when we discovered we were going to arrive late. Oh, I forgot to mention the fabulous beds and bedding, simply dreamy. I highly encourage a 2 night stay, the town is so charming and the food is heavenly.
As professional archeological /historic cultural photographers, this lovely restored historic home was a treat for us to stay in while we spent a week in Sandwich, Massachusetts - early May. Wanting to beat the tourists season, we chose this house for our stay and this location for its historical significance and history. This is not a home for teenagers nor younger children. Modern kitchens and baths with early 1700’s flare. So much to appreciate about this time period on Ole Cape Cod. Yes, there is WiFi and a TV with streaming channels. Within walking distance to so many historic sites in Sandwich, including the Sandwich Glass Museum, which I highly recommend visiting. There are delightful restaurants all close by; Sam’s Seafood Restaurant has the best pure seafood I’ve ever eaten, Cafe Chew has delightful breakfast offerings and Apple Bombs that are out of this world, Snowy Owl has breakfast empanadas and delicious coffee - many others in Sandwich. A family of Canadian geese brought their newly hatched chicks around to visit us daily as the pond behind the house is home to ducks and geese alike. The home is filled with delightful historic children’s books written by Thornton Burgess, author of Peter Cottontail stories and Ready Fox, who once lived there. Personally, we will return to this lovely home at some time when we visit the Cape. Thank you to our host as our visit left us with wonderful
Staying at this property was like stepping back in time (with modern conveniences). The home exudes history & charm in every room. The beds were very comfortable and the 3 bathrooms were very convenient. Antiques & adorable rabbit themed knick knacks throughout the home. Decent sized dining area and gathering room allowed our family of 5 adults and 1 child plenty of room. The property is adjacent to a picturesque lake and directly across the street from the Dunbar Tea Room. Conveniently close & withing walking distance to all of the Sandwich historic district. The kitchen has a vintage looking modern gas range/oven and refrigerator. Not a lot of sitting room in the kitchen, you will need to use the dining room which is located right off of it. Two staircases allow you easy access to the upper bedrooms. Great communication from the owners of the property; check in/out was simple. If you like history, you'll want to stay at the Deacon Elder Home.
The house was more than accommodating for 4 adults and our 3.5 year old granddaughter, nearly 2 year old grandson and a 2.5 month old infant. The house has a historic story that we are now going to check out. It has a scenic view and Mike & Jen were super helpful with their communication.A 5/5 across the board!
Beautifully decorated, great location, gorgeous setting. When we first arrived it felt like we were in a museum but after a while it felt very comfortable and relaxing. Modern amenities seamlessly merge with the antiques throughout the house. Comfortable beds and three full baths made it easy to share with friends. The expansive grounds right on the pond was a lovely spot to have morning coffee, read a book, or relax with friends. It's perfectly situated in the center of historic Sandwich and walking distance to the Heritage Museum and Gardens. You even have access to fresh spring water for free up the street at a well that the locals have been using for years. The whole experience, inside and out was completely charming.
