About this property
Relax at PALAZZO PIZZO RESIDENCE in charming fisher village by the sea
The newly renovated residence by Palazzo Pizzo is located in an over 200 year old, beautifully restored palazzo in the charming historic center of Pizzo in Calabria, Southern Italy, at the 'Costa degli Dei', coast of Gods (only 25 km from Lamezia airport). Enjoy the peaceful location at the sea while at the same time the bustling Piazza della Repubblica of the old town center of Pizzo with its restaurants, bars and ice cream parlors and shops is just a 2 minutes walk away! You can reach the beach at Pizzo Marina in just 10-15 minutes walk. (It takes longer on the way back to walk uphill. Alternatively, you can order an Ape-taxi during summer). More beaches and attractions can be reached by car.
From a small piazzetta, a separate entrance of the palazzo, with a stone staircase leads 20 steps down to a spectacular vaulted cellar which is located on a rock, about 50 meters above sea level. In the last centuries this space (app 70 sqm) was used as warehouse to store olive oil and soap. The cellar has been restored with special techniques of insulation. The natural stone walls and ceilings are well preserved. The apartment is best suitable for 2 persons. The one bedroom is separated by a paravent from the living area. The bed is antique and a queen size (170cm x 195cm). The newly installed bathroom features a rain shower under a vaulted ceiling with sea view. From the living and dining area with a modern kitchenette you have access to a private garden terrace on top of the cliff. All windows, a small balcony and the terrace are facing the sea. You can enjoy breathtaking 180 degree sea and sunset views over the Bay of Santa Eufemia (or Gulf of Lamezia). On clear days you can spot the active volcano Stromboli, which is part of the Aeolian islands of Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea. In spring, you might also see dolphins in the bay.
You can spend days on the private garden terrace of the residence watching fisher boats passing by and beautiful sunsets, or explore Calabrian history and beautiful landscapes in diverse day trips (we will provide you with ideas).
Pizzo is the ideal stop-over location when travelling between Amalfi and Sicily. From Salerno it is just a 2 1/2 hours train ride away - or a 4 hours drive from Napoli. In about 3 hours you can reach Taormina in Sicily from Pizzo (by road and ferry). In summer ferry boats take you on an Aeolian Island day tour, including volcano Stromboli. Departure is from Vibo Marina (4 km, 5 min drive from Pizzo) or Tropea.
Pizzo (the old town) is lively all year round, although more quiet from November until Easter/April. The best time to visit Calabria is from May to October. However, April and November can be nice and mild too and swimming in the sea might be possible. It rains most in December and January. You will find snow in the mountains during winter and can ski in some areas. The hottest and busiest month is August. Avoid to travel the days around 15th of August if you can. September and October are good for porcini mushroom collecting.
The little village beach at Pizzo Marina is picturesque with its colourful umbrellas that each visitor brings. This beach, although not service, features two sweet water showers, and the bars and pizzerias are just across the street.
Other beach areas of Pizzo, Piedigrotta, Marinella or Marina can also be reached with an Ape-Taxi Service from the main piazza.
You do not need a car to stay at Palazzo Pizzo Residence.
With your booking we will provide our guidebook to Pizzo with lots of recommendations for local restaurants, day trips, museums and important phone numbers.
This apartment is not suitable for small children and people afraid of height. Extra person is 20 Euro/night for bed sheets and towels.

Why they chose this property
Why Pizzo? - The location is superb, the people are friendly, the life is simple, the food tastes delicious, the ice cream is the best, the climate is healthy, the prices are moderate, the beach is in walking distance, time stands still, Italy as we love it, and the international airport is only 25km away!
What makes this property unique
Once you are inside the palazzo and take a look above the sea, you are hocked. The apartment is centrally located downtown of the centro storico but with its location on the edge of the cliff you can enjoy serene scenery and amazing views.
Pizzo has a healthy and relaxing climate. The location is serene, quiet, peaceful, picturesque and romantic. Just 3 minutes walk from bustling, lively main piazza (which is quiet between 2pm-5pm as well) but getting busier and busier in summer nights after 9pm. In August there a many performances on stage.
Pizzo, other than more touristic places in Calabria like Tropea, is not as much deserted outside the main holiday season as the Pizzitani live in their village all year round. Even centro storico is becoming more and more popular with local families who are re-discovering the charm of their village. Even in winter it is not deserted.
While in Pizzo you can taste the world famous tartufo ice cream that was invented here. It worth the whole trip. Or if you prefer a more savoury tastes, then you are right in Calabria. The delicious tomato with sweet red onions are a favorite light lunch dish. Calabrians like to cook with chili and garlic.
The town also has an old little castello with an museum and around 10 churches to visit.
All our favorite restaurants and bars, all in walking distance. If you rent a car, we have ideas for day trips for you as well. Calabria is a beautiful, hidden gem!
