About this property

Secure, private, beachfront, guest house, on 2.5 acres. One bedroom with high quality queen bed. Main bathroom has a large shower. House is fully stocked with paper products, condiments, seasonings, etc. Kitchen is complete with all you need to prepare simple and gourmet meals. Bar-type seating inside and outside., Living room with plenty of seating and a new 43" Cable and Smart TV, about 200 DVD's. High speed WiFi, cable TV, All windows are screened.
The loft has a queen size bed, seating and sink/vanity. The house is ideal for a couple, but can sleep four.
This is a small, clean, comfortable house next to a classic island home on over 2.5 acres of private property with fruit trees. The property extends from the road to the beach in a quiet, safe area of Sandy Bay, at Spooky Channel in the Marine Reserve - includes use of the private dock.
Exceptional snorkeling and diving right out front at Spooky Channel. Sandy Bay is shallow and the reef is a short swim, kayak, or float from the end of the dock. The dock is private for the community, has stairs and a fresh water shower. You can get picked up for diving, snorkeling, or fishing right from the dock from the reputable Blue Island Divers or Sandy Bay Divers here in Sandy Bay.
We continue to upgrade the house with modern furniture and furnishing (inside and on the deck), new linens, electronics, dishes, cutlery, kitchen appliances, new AC, and BBQ.
We, the owners, live on-site in a classic island house and are available to provide information, arrange transportation and activities, borrow cooking ingredients/utensils and assist you any way we can to make your vacation as enjoyable as possible.
If requested, we personally pick you up at the airport, take you to the grocery store, then to the guest house. We provide information about the guest house, the area, the island, and answer any questions. We will bring you back to the airport at the end of your vacation and can print any tickets/boarding docs.
You are welcome to the fruit from any of our trees/bushes on-site. We have coconuts (year round), cashews, papayas, mangos, noni's, breadfruit, bananas, plantains, soursop, starfruit, and avocados, (seasonally).
Roatan is very casual. You can go just about anywhere in t-shirt, beach coverup and flip-flops. Don't pack too much. Do bring a positive attitude and an open mind. Remember that Roatan is still part of a developing country.
• Swimming, snorkeling, fishing, and world-class diving is easily accessible on the coral reef right out front off the dock. The dock has a freshwater shower and covered area.
• We are ideally located 10 minutes from West End, where you’ll find many dive centers, restaurants, beach bars, shopping, and small grocery stores and also 10 minutes from Coxen Hole, the major town on the island.
• Large, screened porch with fans, seating, table, lighting, BBQ
• Air conditioning in the bedroom and living room /kitchen (on request),ceiling fans throughout, mobile fans, reading lights.
• Fully equipped kitchen, modern appliances, filtered water/water cooler
• Washing machine (w/detergent) and a clothesline off the deck
• Free WiFi access on-site and cell phone (phone provided with 20-30 minutes locally.
• 1 - 2 person and 1 one person kayak, 2 mountain bikes, paddleboard, beach lounge chairs, hammocks, snorkel marker, floatation devices, snorkel equipment, beach front picnic facilities, horseshoes, volleyball - all included, (guitar and djembe drum available upon request).
• On deck is a gas BBQ (charcoal BBQ and fire pit available).
• 43” flat screen TV with local cable. DVD player and DVD library with about 200 movies, and speakers for mp3 or phone hookup.
To enjoy your stay, it's best if you're OK with dogs. We have 2 dogs that are good with guests but do bark when unfamiliar people or dogs come around, but they provide great security. We don't let them bark too much and clean up after them daily.

FAQs:
Q: How do you get to Roatan?
A: Lots of options but they vary by time of the year. The major airlines are American out of Miami and Dallas, United out of Houston, Delta out of Atlanta, Sun country out of Minneapolis, Sunwing or other charters out of Toronto and Montreal. Spirit Airlines to San Pedro Sula, HN, then CM Airlines or others here. This info changes often so email me and I'll try to help
Q: Do I need local currency (Lempiras).
A: No, just bring US dollars (Canadian dollars and Euros are not generally accepted). Make sure the bills are in very good condition. There are cash machines as well. Make sure your bank knows your travel plans so they do not cancel your credit card for suspicious use. Credit cards are generally accepted for larger purchases but you can often get a better deal paying cash. If you'll be taking taxis, we can exchange money at bank rate for you to get you started, then just use US and get change in local Lempiras.
Q: What are prices there?
A: Prices for groceries and meals out are about the same as in the US and Canada. If you buy local products it's cheaper, American products cost a bit more. Alcohol is generally much cheaper.
Q: How do I stay connected electronically (wifi, phone)?
A: We have a fiber optic mesh system that lets you connect from several places on the property. We have upgraded to a upper level system but it is not US standard. I use various online communications systems - FB messenger, What's App, Zoom, Netflix...that work pretty well here.
There are also lots of temp plans that you can get short term that work well here. Phone calls or minutes to US cost about $.10 - 15 cents a minute while not using local WiFi. Best to put your phone on airplane mode to avoid expensive roaming charges.
Q: Are Roatan and Sandy Bay safe?
A: Yes, we think so. There is opportunistic crime mainly involving electronics left unattended. Rentals that are in local barrios or where people can pass freely very close to the house have more issues. Places with owners on site, dogs, and are well lit have very few problems. We, and our guests have had no issues with crime in 17 years. That said, use common sense as you would anywhere.
Q: What do I need to bring (and not bring)?
A: Bring less clothes that you think you need. We have a washer and clothes line. Quick drying, light clothes, light rain jacket, slip on shoes, bug spray that works for you, necessary medications (although most are cheap here and do not require prescriptions) are key. We have snorkel gear if you want to check out the reef, but if you have a good fitting mask and snorkel, bring it. Don't bother with tie-on shoes, socks, jewelry, beach towels, or hair dryer.
Q:Are the bugs bad?
A: The house is raised 10 feet and completely screened and on the beach with good breezes to minimize bugs. However, bring bug spray or you can buy it here for exploring. We keep the house very clean to deter any bugs inside, but leaving food and beverages out can attract bugs, so it's best to keep the house tidy.
Q: What should I buy when I arrive (and not buy)?
A: Buy whatever you would like to eat for the first few days. We go to the store every couple days and are happy to take you along. The house is stocked with a water cooler, spices, condiments, sugar, coffee filters, oils, vinegar, soaps, cleaning supplies, paper towels, TP... If you need anything that is not there, just ask.
Q: Do I need an international drivers license to drive there?
A: No. A valid drivers license from your country and state is fine.

Sandra and I have been together for nearly 40 years. We retired from hectic careers in Western US and Canada in 2007. We love animals and help local people care for their animals and coordinate veterinary care. Sandra just finished a five year masters degree in holistic nutrition and is board certified in holistic health care. She helps people reverse diabetes and CVD. I stay busy maintaining the houses, property, and equipment. We love our lives in Roatan and like to share our piece of paradise with guests.

Why they chose this property
We have been certified divers since 1993. We knew we wanted to live in the Caribbean and fell in love with Roatan in 1997. We found our dream property with an old island home on the beach in 2001. It is just our house and the guest house on our 2.5 acres from the road to the beach. No need to walk through other neighborhoods.
We decided to rent our guest house that was built in 2007, but finished/upgraded in 2011 and now we make minor upgrades to both houses and the grounds often.

What makes this property unique
The beach is right out your front door. You can quietly relax in lounge chairs or hammocks on our private part of the beach or on the dock out front. All of Sandy Bay is shallow and the reef is generally close. Snorkeling off the 400' dock gets you close to the reef for great snorkeling in either direction and even outside the reef through Spooky Channel. However, it's too shallow to swim right off the beach.
There is no local access through this property and rarely motor vehicles on the beach here. This keeps our property safe and quiet.
You can take the kayak out about 150 yards to Spooky Channel or just swim from the dock out front. We have lots of flotation equipment, snorkel marker, lounge chairs, a picnic table, and hammocks. Anthony's Key and Roatan Institute of Marine Science is just 1/4 mile away. It's quiet but centrally located within 10 minutes and a less than two dollar per person taxi ride to both West End or Coxen Hole.
We have a grocery store, several small markets, fruit stands, and restaurants within easy walking distance.
We also have a seasonal variety of fruit and nut trees you are welcome to.
