About Al or Sandra Segarich
Sandra and I have been together 28 years. We retired from hectic careers in Western US and Canada in 2007. We love animals and help local people care for their animals and coordinate veterinary care. Sandra is working on a masters degree in holistic nutrition and I stay busy maintaining the houses, property, and equipment. We both golf and are members at our local PGA course. We love our lives in Roatan and like to share our piece of paradise with guests.
Al or Sandra Segarich purchased this House in 2008
Why Al or Sandra Segarich chose Sandy Bay
We have been certified divers since 1993. We knew we wanted to live in the Caribbean and fell in love with Roatan in 1997. We found our dream property with an old island home on the beach in 2001. It is just our house and the guest house on our 2.5 acres from the road to the beach. No need to walk through other neighborhoods. We recently decided to rent our guest house that was built in 2007, but finished/upgraded in 2011 and now we make minor upgrades to both houses often.
What makes this House unique
The beach is right out your front door. You can quietly relax in a hammock or lounge chairs on our private part of the beach. There is no local access through this property and rarely motor vehicles on the beach here. Snorkel or take the kayak out about 150 yards to Spooky Channel or just swm from the dock out front. Anthony's Key and Roatan Institute of Marine Science is just 1/4 mile away. It's quiet but centrally located within 10 minutes and a dollar and a half taxi ride to both West End or Coxen Hole.
100% refund if cancelled at least 60 days before arrival date. 50% refund if cancelled at least 30 days before arrival date.
The picture says it all. The cute cottage is beachfront, situated in one of the best snorkeling locations in Roatan. Al and Sandra are terrific, gracious and kind. Rides to and from the airport were greatly appreciated, as well as trips for groceries. I think they wondered why we never "did anything", but the place was so nice we just wanted to enjoy it. Swimming through Spooky Channel to hover over the outer reef was a blast, and just enjoying the sunshine and beauty of the setting was enough for us. Maybe someday if we went back we'd see what else Roatan has to offer, but for this trip the cottage was enough. Lastly, a suggestion: Sandra will try to tell you the small mangoes are fibrous and not that good. Don't believe her; we inhaled them, sweet and juicy. Given they were laying all over the grounds we didn't feel too guilty about raiding the supply.
A great place to stay in Roatan, no matter what you want to do there.
I’m not sure what to say that hasn’t already been said in other reviews. Everything about our stay here was wonderful. Al picked us up at the airport, took us to the grocery store, then to the house. Once we got settled, Al and Sandra drove us over to Blue Bahia Resort so we could get checked in with Roatan Divers for our upcoming week of diving (would highly recommend Roatan Divers as well – great operation and location near the house).
Had lunch with Al and Sandra at Blue Bahia and then headed back to the house. We were diving most of the week, so our time at the property was largely limited to mornings and evenings, but we couldn’t have been more pleased. The house has everything you could want or need for a comfortable stay; kitchen was very well setup and had everything we needed for cooking meals, bed was very comfortable, AC in the bedroom was great, etc. The property is beautiful. We had fresh bananas every day, Al gave us some roasted cashews that came from their trees, and the view from the screened porch is stunning.
As so many others have said, it really is a great place to stay, and Al and Sandra were awesome hosts. Not intrusive at all, but available if needed, and just great people to hang out with. We spent time with them on the property and went out to dinner and then did a little bar-hopping with them on our last night on the island and had a great time.
Thank you Al and Sandra – give Jack a scratch for us!
Beach House Idyll
We spent a week in Al and Sandra's wonderful house on the beach. Al and Sandra were quite helpful from the moment Al picked us up at the ferry from Útila with a stop at the grocery store for supplies, until the morning of our departure, when Sandra kindly offered to take us to the airport for our o'dark thirty flight to Belize. They had great recommendations for restaurants and helped us pick a dive shop that was perfect for us.
The house is quite spacious for two people and well furnished. I would feel very comfortable living there permanently. We did not cook but the kitchen is well stocked.
Our first morning began with a short kayak paddle out to the reef for some excellent snorkelling. It's swimmable from the pier but we liked the visibility of the kayak tied to a buoy.
There are four restaurants within walking distance and West End is a 10 minute cab ride away. With a 7 steady flow of cabs on the main road, we never waited for more then a couple of minutes for one to come by. I'm not sure what the official fare is but it is less than $4 (100 limperas). We had a couple of drivers try to gouge us, so our strategy was to have exact change. We spent many hours on the screened in porch and one particularly warm afternoon on the end of the pier enjoying the breeze.
If you like privacy and peace and quiet on what seems like your own private beach this is the place for it.
We just got back, and I must post a review. What an incredible experience, we loved our stay in Sandy Bay, Roatan! Our first time to the island, and definitely plan to come back and stay at Al and Sandra’s. Al picked us up at the airport and from the first moment we met him, we felt so at ease. What a great guy, took us to the grocery store, loaded up on some beer and wine, and off to Sandy Bay. Such a great host, every restaurant he recommended was excellent, didn’t need Trip Advisor, we had Al! We really enjoyed just hanging out, listening to music, learning all about cashews (they were in season), and insight about the island from Al.
We didn’t want to stay in the busy West End or West Bay, we really wanted something more tranquil and quiet. This is a perfect spot, you can cab it to the West End in minutes for restaurants, live music (loved the Sundowner with Scotty C. and Luis), shopping and more. There were nights we just hung out on the dock for a peaceful sunset and cooked in. This place is perfect for a couple, who loves the water, nature and dogs (we miss Jack already).. The diving and snorkeling were great!
Al and Sandra, so great to meet you. Sandra glad we were able to see you a bit before we left, looking forward to our next visit. Al, thank you for your tremendous hospitality, we really had fun getting to know you! Brad misses you already, he is really having a rough time adjusting 😜. Take care and we will be in touch!
Spooky Channel Guest House is Charming!
The property is beautiful with quick access to some of the best snorkeling on the island. A great place to relax. Al & Sandra are very helpful and accommodating. Any place you want to go is just a short cab ride away. We had a wonderful stay!
Ultimate relaxation and Amazing Hosts!
We can not say enough how gracious and responsive Al and Sandra are as hosts! We had everything we needed in the well stocked kitchen, and all the standard conveniences including WiFi, in the clean and cozy beach house. Above and beyond that though, was a beautiful and relaxing view right from the screened porch that we enjoyed for the majority of our days. The reef was a lovely snorkel right off the dock as well. We enjoyed the bedroom AC at night, and used the fans during the day, as it was quite warm. Sandra and Al took us by the grocery on the way to the villa and even returned us to the airport at the end of our stay. Cabs were frequent and cheap on the road out front and we ate twice at Bambu, an incredible fusion restaurant just down the road. We love dogs and enjoyed our frequent visits with Jack especially. If you’re headed to Roatan, you couldn’t choose better hosts than Sandra and Al!
The guest and our classic, island house are the only houses on our private, 2 1/2 acres from road to beach. There are many fruit trees, and plants that you are welcome to.
The reef is just 150' and is at the famous Spooky Channel with lots of marine life for divers & snorkelers.
This is a quiet area of Sandy Bay. There are several restaurnts/bars within walking distance and many more a short taxi ride away. You don't need a care here as taxi's run on the main road every couple minutes and cost $1.50 per person to West End or Coxen Hole, both about 10 minutes away.
