Secure, private, beachfront, guest house, on 2.5 acres. One bedroom with high quality queen bed. Main bathroom has a large shower. House is fully stocked with paper products, condiments, seasonings, etc. Kitchen is complete with all you need to prepare simple and gourmet meals. Bar-type seating inside and outside., Living room with plenty of seating and a new 43" Cable and Smart TV, about 200 DVD's. High speed WiFi, cable TV, All windows are screened.
The loft has a queen size bed, seating and sink/vanity. The house is ideal for a couple, but can sleep four.

This is a small, clean, comfortable house next to a classic island home on over 2.5 acres of private property with fruit trees. The property extends from the road to the beach in a quiet, safe area of Sandy Bay, at Spooky Channel in the Marine Reserve - includes use of the private dock.

Exceptional snorkeling and diving right out front at Spooky Channel. Sandy Bay is shallow and the reef is a short swim, kayak, or float from the end of the dock. The dock is private for the community, has stairs and a fresh water shower. You can get picked up for diving, snorkeling, or fishing right from the dock from the reputable Blue Island Divers or Sandy Bay Divers here in Sandy Bay.

We continue to upgrade the house with modern furniture and furnishing (inside and on the deck), new linens, electronics, dishes, cutlery, kitchen appliances, new AC, and BBQ.

We, the owners, live on-site in a classic island house and are available to provide information, arrange transportation and activities, borrow cooking ingredients/utensils and assist you any way we can to make your vacation as enjoyable as possible.

If requested, we personally pick you up at the airport, take you to the grocery store, then to the guest house. We provide information about the guest house, the area, the island, and answer any questions. We will bring you back to the airport at the end of your vacation and can print any tickets/boarding docs.

You are welcome to the fruit from any of our trees/bushes on-site. We have coconuts (year round), cashews, papayas, mangos, noni's, breadfruit, bananas, plantains, soursop, starfruit, and avocados, (seasonally).

Roatan is very casual. You can go just about anywhere in t-shirt, beach coverup and flip-flops. Don't pack too much. Do bring a positive attitude and an open mind. Remember that Roatan is still part of a developing country.

• Swimming, snorkeling, fishing, and world-class diving is easily accessible on the coral reef right out front off the dock. The dock has a freshwater shower and covered area.
• We are ideally located 10 minutes from West End, where you’ll find many dive centers, restaurants, beach bars, shopping, and small grocery stores and also 10 minutes from Coxen Hole, the major town on the island.
• Large, screened porch with fans, seating, table, lighting, BBQ
• Air conditioning in the bedroom and living room /kitchen (on request),ceiling fans throughout, mobile fans, reading lights.
• Fully equipped kitchen, modern appliances, filtered water/water cooler
• Washing machine (w/detergent) and a clothesline off the deck
• Free WiFi access on-site and cell phone (phone provided with 20-30 minutes locally.
• 1 - 2 person and 1 one person kayak, 2 mountain bikes, paddleboard, beach lounge chairs, hammocks, snorkel marker, floatation devices, snorkel equipment, beach front picnic facilities, horseshoes, volleyball - all included, (guitar and djembe drum available upon request).
• On deck is a gas BBQ (charcoal BBQ and fire pit available).
• 43” flat screen TV with local cable. DVD player and DVD library with about 200 movies, and speakers for mp3 or phone hookup.

To enjoy your stay, it's best if you're OK with dogs. We have 2 dogs that are good with guests but do bark when unfamiliar people or dogs come around, but they provide great security. We don't let them bark too much and clean up after them daily.

Direct flights to Roatan are currently available from Houston, Atlanta, Miami, Toronto, Minneapolis, and NewJersey. Main carriers from the US are United, Delta, and American and Sunwing. WestJet, and Air Transat from Canada.

If you would like flight information just contact us and we are happy to help. There are many flights that may not be listed on most search engines.

FAQs:

Q: How do you get to Roatan?
A: Lots of options but they vary by time of the year. The major airlines are American out of Miami and Dallas, United out of Houston, Delta out of Atlanta, Sun country out of Minneapolis, Sunwing or other charters out of Toronto and Montreal. Spirit Airlines to San Pedro Sula, HN, then CM Airlines or others here. This info changes often so email me and I'll try to help

Q: Do I need local currency (Lempiras).
A: No, just bring US dollars (Canadian dollars and Euros are not generally accepted). Make sure the bills are in very good condition. There are cash machines as well. Make sure your bank knows your travel plans so they do not cancel your credit card for suspicious use. Credit cards are generally accepted for larger purchases but you can often get a better deal paying cash. If you'll be taking taxis, we can exchange money at bank rate for you to get you started, then just use US and get change in local Lempiras.

Q: What are prices there?
A: Prices for groceries and meals out are about the same as in the US and Canada. If you buy local products it's cheaper, American products cost a bit more. Alcohol is generally much cheaper.

Q: How do I stay connected electronically (wifi, phone)?
A: We have a fiber optic mesh system that lets you connect from several places on the property. We have upgraded to a upper level system but it is not US standard. I use various online communications systems - FB messenger, What's App, Zoom, Netflix...that work pretty well here.
There are also lots of temp plans that you can get short term that work well here. Phone calls or minutes to US cost about $.10 - 15 cents a minute while not using local WiFi. Best to put your phone on airplane mode to avoid expensive roaming charges.

Q: Are Roatan and Sandy Bay safe?
A: Yes, we think so. There is opportunistic crime mainly involving electronics left unattended. Rentals that are in local barrios or where people can pass freely very close to the house have more issues. Places with owners on site, dogs, and are well lit have very few problems. We, and our guests have had no issues with crime in 17 years. That said, use common sense as you would anywhere.

Q: What do I need to bring (and not bring)?
A: Bring less clothes that you think you need. We have a washer and clothes line. Quick drying, light clothes, light rain jacket, slip on shoes, bug spray that works for you, necessary medications (although most are cheap here and do not require prescriptions) are key. We have snorkel gear if you want to check out the reef, but if you have a good fitting mask and snorkel, bring it. Don't bother with tie-on shoes, socks, jewelry, beach towels, or hair dryer.

Q:Are the bugs bad?
A: The house is raised 10 feet and completely screened and on the beach with good breezes to minimize bugs. However, bring bug spray or you can buy it here for exploring. We keep the house very clean to deter any bugs inside, but leaving food and beverages out can attract bugs, so it's best to keep the house tidy.

Q: What should I buy when I arrive (and not buy)?
A: Buy whatever you would like to eat for the first few days. We go to the store every couple days and are happy to take you along. The house is stocked with a water cooler, spices, condiments, sugar, coffee filters, oils, vinegar, soaps, cleaning supplies, paper towels, TP... If you need anything that is not there, just ask.

Q: Do I need an international drivers license to drive there?
A: No. A valid drivers license from your country and state is fine.

Spooky Channel Beach Home

The previous reviews are dead on. The beach house is comfortable and well stocked. The hosts are extremely helpful and go out of their way to ensure you enjoy your stay. Jack, Hope and Molly provide 24/7 security for just a little treat and belly scratch.

Beachfront with great hospitality

We had a wonderful getaway. The Spooky Channel guest house was just what we were looking for. Relaxing beachfront location off the beaten path. Great snorkeling in the reef not far from the dock. Our hosts provided great hospitality.

Awesome week on the Beach!

Sandra and Al’s bungalow on the beach at Roatan is an awesome place to get away and just relax. Wonderful snorkeling right off the pier! The beach is quiet, the water is all kinds of blue and the weather is perfect! Al picked us up at the airport and dropped us off when it was time to leave. Great hosts, great house and great getaway!

10 Days in Paradise

Our host Al was wonderful to us (Sandra was traveling) and fun to hang with. Miss our cute little casita already as we do doggies Jack and Hope, and kitty Nugget. Our view was gorgeous, and most days we snorkeled at the reef just off shore from our front door. It was fabulous!!

Couldn't have been more peaceful and serene!

Me and my wife both really enjoyed our stay at this property. The hosts were super welcoming and informative on your arrival and live close by if you need or have any additional questions. The house was nice and clean and had all of the basic necessities needed for an enjoyable stay at the property. It felt really safe the whole time we were there and the place and surroundings were super quiet. The view to the beach, ocean and dock were amazing. Its definitely in a more quiet area of the island and we appreciated that very much. Would absolutely stay here again and its not even been 24 hours and we already greatly miss Roatan. Thank you Al & Sandra

Wonderful Home; Great Hosts!

Absolutely one of the BEST places we've ever stayed. Al and Sandra are just simply wonderful hosts. The location is just as the pictures in the listing show: white sandy beach, turquoise ocean water; friendly doggies. And far enough away from the road to be reasonably quiet. Snorkeling was fun all the way out to the reef; island food was fresh, and the natives easy to get along with. I would recommend a rental car just to make things a bit easier, but taxis will pick you up at the end of the drive.

Blissful Roatan

Don't bother looking further, you've found your Roatan home at Al and Sandra's Spooky Channel guest house. My gosh, just look at the view from the screened and covered deck! Their's is the nicest coconut dappled beach in all of Sandy Bay. Snorkeling the reef from the convenient dock is a world apart, the best snorkeling we've experienced in the Caribbean. We found the guest house perfect for every need and comfort, and our hosts accommodating and supportive in every way possible. Sandra helped us resolve a medical problem by taking us to a good clinic and helping us navigate the protocols--talk about above and beyond all expectations! To sum up, the guest house, your hosts Al and Sandra, and the setting are simply wonderful. Welcome to Roatan!

Special guesthouse on the beach

This location is perfect for a couple. We loved the beautiful sunsets from the top deck of the pier there. The snorkeling and swimming right from the dock is so convenient. Al and Sandra living next door in the main house was so nice! They were always available to answer any questions we had. They're so hospitable and willing to help us. We had a good time going to a local brewery and also golfing on our last day there with them! Their dogs, Jack and Hope are great and made you feel safe at night! We miss them already! We didn't need a rental car. We did a few excursions on the island and the taxi service is easy to get from their driveway. Don't hesitate to book here!

Perfect beach cottage right on the water

This was the perfect spot for our recent trip to Roatan. The home was clean, comfortable, and well equipped with everything we needed. We loved that it was right on the water and in a quiet area, but just a short taxi ride to everywhere we wanted to go. And Al and Sandra were the most amazing hosts! Sandra picked us up and brought us back to the airport, took us to the store, and gave us a ton of knowledge about the island. She even took us by the dive shop that we were using for the week so that we would know how to get there. They were always there to offer advice and answer any questions we had, but were never intrusive. They definitely made our first trip to Roatan easy and comfortable!

Delightful

My husband and I had a wonderful time at Al and Sandra’s house. They are excellent hosts—thoughtful, friendly, accommodating. They’re willing to chat or give you space, whatever your style. The house was great. Spacious and comfortable plus strong AC in the bedroom for sleeping. We have stayed in a lot of rental houses and this one had the most well-appointed kitchen by far. Sharp knives! Yes! Plus tons of condiments. Hanging out on the dock in hammocks was delightful plus kayaking to various sites nearby. Al and Sandra make it easy to stay without renting a car. They picked us up/dropped us off from the airport and took us to the grocery store multiple times. Catching taxis is super easy from the driveway—we went to West Bay and the West End often. We had a great time and would definitely stay again!

Annual Girls Trip - Loved it!

Recently spent a week at the Spooky Channel Guest House. It's easy to access and convenient to both east and west end island hotspots but we found the property to be our favorite. Al and Sandra were wonderful--helpful and available whenever we needed! The beach is shaded by palms and the fruit trees in back were a source of yummy snacks! Although accessing the water from the beach was discouraged due to turtle grass and some algae, the property's two-level dock was perfect for days in a hammock and access to the spectacular snorkeling reef. The breezes were strong while we were there ...only needed the A/C one night. A few helpful notes about the house (definitely not criticisms):Freezer/Fridge and oven are slightly smaller than traditional. Oven/burners require manual lighting of the pilot. Many of the carvings and artwork on the property are creations of a local artist who frequently walks by the property. Don' miss the chance to hear his story. When the season is right, coconuts and such may fall onto the metal roof--which can be startling at first!ATVs and even cars pass on the beach occasionally--particularly on cruise ship days. They do not travel ON the property but worth noting. Fell in love with the property and Roatan--so many artisans and local places to enjoy. Grab cinnamon buns at Sandy Buns and floating at Gingers beach bar & grill! And don't miss CocoFiber Arts gallery by Karen Coad. Such amazing original pieces...
Two-level, secured, great for sun or shade and perfect access for snorkeling.

Absolutely Wonderful Honeymoon!

The owners were amazing, and gave so much good advice and details. The area was clean and very well organized. It’s such a nice little hidden gem right by a really fun dock that you can snorkel at the end for beginners and just paddles away from the spooky channel. I snorkeled every single day and it’s so large and vast you are always finding more interesting places. I ate mangos, water coconut and a few other fruits from the trees. We pretty much stayed the whole time at the condo and property but the west end is fun too. The only thing to watch out for the huge roaches that won’t harm you, and make sure to bring a lot of bug spray for the Sand Flies. I had an absolutely wonderful unforgettable time, and you will as well along with falling in love with the owners and their dog!

Fabulous Place

Wow! What a wonderful place! It was just beautiful and everything was as described. Al and Sandra are beyond helpful. They really helped us navigate a new, unfamiliar and foreign place. Everything from picking us up at the airport and taking us to the store to advising where is good to eat and what the best rum is. They also repeatedly checked to see if we needed anything. That was extraordinary and very helpful. We felt safe at all times and it was just awesome that they were available if we had any questions and concerns. The bed is super comfy and with the fans and AC in the bedroom we were never too hot. The place came with some kitchen basics like oil and spices which we have not had at other VRBO rentals. Access to the private pier was great too. I can't say enough positive things about this rental. It was amazing and we highly recommend it.

Our stay at Al and Sandra's was everything I had hoped for. I truly could not have wished for anything better. This met all those hopes, with a beautiful ocean view from the lovely, comfortable house. Al and Sandra were extremely helpful and friendly, while also being completely respectful of our privacy. Our stay in Spooky Channel house was more than we could ever have hoped for. Sandra and Al made the time a breeze. The house was loaded with everything we needed and then some. The perfect Sandy Bay stay

We were extremely pleased with the rental from beginning to end. Al and Sandra are super nice, and always there to lend a hand if one is needed. We were on Roatan for a month, and the snorkeling in Spooky Channel was our favorite. The place was well stocked throughout. We will certainly stay there again if we return to Roatan.

A magical paradise

We absolutely loved our stay at Al and Sandra's. The beach and house are so peaceful and the snorkeling is great. We took the kayak out multiple times and snorkeled the reef for hours. It's easy to grab a taxi from the main road and venure into West End or West Bay. Al and Sandra were so helpful, especially when our flights were rebooked due to storms in Dallas and we didnt arrive until a day later than expected. Al was still able to pick us up and let us grocery shop on the way to the house so we were fully stocked for the week. And Sandra took us back to the airport on our last day. 100% recommended their place for your next vacation.

Sandra and I have been together for nearly 40 years. We retired from hectic careers in Western US and Canada in 2007. We love animals and help local people care for their animals and coordinate veterinary care. Sandra just finished a five year masters degree in holistic nutrition and is board certified in holistic health care. She helps people reverse diabetes and CVD. I stay busy maintaining the houses, property, and equipment. We love our lives in Roatan and like to share our piece of paradise with guests.
If you just want to get away or are looking at options of part-time or full-time life here in Roatan we are happy to discuss our experience, give ideas and contacts and answer any questions. We are here to help make your vacation the best it can be. Don't hesitate to ask us anything about life in Roatan, the guest house, activities....

Why they chose this property

We have been certified divers since 1993. We knew we wanted to live in the Caribbean and fell in love with Roatan in 1997. We found our dream property with an old island home on the beach in 2001. It is just our house and the guest house on our 2.5 acres from the road to the beach. No need to walk through other neighborhoods.
We decided to rent our guest house that was built in 2007, but finished/upgraded in 2011 and now we make minor upgrades to both houses and the grounds often.

What makes this property unique

The beach is right out your front door. You can quietly relax in lounge chairs or hammocks on our private part of the beach or on the dock out front. All of Sandy Bay is shallow and the reef is generally close. Snorkeling off the 400' dock gets you close to the reef for great snorkeling in either direction and even outside the reef through Spooky Channel. However, it's too shallow to swim right off the beach.
There is no local access through this property and rarely motor vehicles on the beach here. This keeps our property safe and quiet.
You can take the kayak out about 150 yards to Spooky Channel or just swim from the dock out front. We have lots of flotation equipment, snorkel marker, lounge chairs, a picnic table, and hammocks. Anthony's Key and Roatan Institute of Marine Science is just 1/4 mile away. It's quiet but centrally located within 10 minutes and a less than two dollar per person taxi ride to both West End or Coxen Hole.
We have a grocery store, several small markets, fruit stands, and restaurants within easy walking distance.
We also have a seasonal variety of fruit and nut trees you are welcome to.
