About this property

"The Cookhouse", Historic Garden District Apt.

A luxury stay in a piece of history, The Cookhouse is a romantic and elegant option located in Charleston’s Garden District near Wragg Mall and its live oaks and fountain, the Charleston Museum, the Visitors’ Center, Marion Square, two historic mansions open to the public (the Aiken-Rhett and Joseph Manigault Houses), and the nationally-recognized cuisine/entertainment district on Upper King. Within walking distance are the King Street shopping area and antiques district, and the City Market.

The spacious professionally-decorated ground-floor 1br/1ba Cookhouse unit accommodates up to four people. The unit has a queen reproduction historic rice bed, two large non-working fireplaces (the original kitchen and laundry rooms to the main house), accent antiques, a spacious bathroom with marble-tiled shower, and a fully-equipped kitchen/sitting room with eating area and full-sized sofa bed. The Cookhouse boasts a professionally-designed patio and garden and has off-street parking for 1-2 cars.

Charleston is full of history, charm and wonderful hospitality. The Cookhouse allows you easy access to beaches (15 minutes), historic river plantations (20 minutes), the South Carolina Aquarium, excellent, diverse cuisine, and allows you to just relax, read, nibble, and imbibe your favorite beverages in the shared garden.

Illustrated in Bernard Herman’s Townhouse: Architecture and Material Life in the Early American City 1780-1830 circa 2005, the Cookhouse was recently tastefully restored following the award-winning restoration of the main John Robinson House, a historically significant Federal double house (1814) constructed by the wealthy merchant who later built the adjacent urban plantation now known as the Aiken-Rhett House. There is an interesting article with several pictures on the Cookhouse restoration in Period Homes magazine (Vol. 14, No. 6, Nov. 2013), a copy of which is available in the Cookhouse.

Please note that The Cookhouse is a duplex structure located behind the main home. This listing is for the ground-floor 1br/1ba unit and there is also a second floor 1br/1ba unit above. The units are completely separate with their own private entrances and share no interior spaces. Also note that while The Cookhouse can accommodate a maximum of 4 guests, the second bed is a full-sized sofa bed in the living area.

Guests have access to the entire ground floor 1br/1ba unit, the shared backyard/patio, and the shared parking area in the rear of the home.

The home is managed locally by Southern Charmed Hospitality Group so someone is always available if any issues or concerns arise.

Please always reach out through the app first for any questions unless in case of dire emergency.

Known as the “Garden District”, the beauty of this downtown Charleston neighborhood is brought to life by community gardens, manicured landscaping, neighborhood parks, and an abundance of open green space.

Packed with amenities and populated with luxury Charleston residential homes, Wraggborough is also located close to Upper King Street, where residents and visitors can enjoy access to some of Charleston’s best upscale restaurants and trendy bars.

Wraggborough is also within walking distance of Marion Square, which features a Charleston market known to be one of the best farmer’s markets in the area for local produce, modern art, and handcrafted goods and home products.

And with contemporary attractions such as the Charleston Museum, the Charleston Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, the Charleston Public Library, and Charleston Music Hall, Wraggborough is the perfect downtown Charleston neighborhood!

With a 94 WalkScore, the neighborhood is a walker's paradise, with easy access to many main points of interest in Downtown Charleston.

There are also local trolleys that run downtown or bike rentals nearby if you prefer to explore a little further.

If exploring outside of Downtown Charleston, a vehicle or taxi will be needed. Uber/Lyft operate throughout the Charleston area.

The listing accommodates a maximum of 4 guests with a queen bed and full-sized sleeper sofa.

Return Visit

We have stayed at this property for the last 6 years and have enjoyed every visit. Location and parking are the two major issues that this property provides and is excellent. We will return.

Bed was comfortable, kitchen was equipped, and good location / great parking. What was not great was WiFi, upstairs neighbors(not sure if they were moving or practicing dance routines), and critters (aka bugs). Neighborhood was quiet, easy to get in and out, about .5 miles from downtown. Would not recommend walking in the summer (Uber was cheap option) but otherwise easy / friendly walking. Host supplied shampoo, conditioner, soap.

The Cookhouse

We stayed an entire week at the Cookhouse. It was perfectly clean, had plenty of space for a couple, and the parking was a plus. The bed was comfortable and the outdoor space was beautiful. The location in Charleston was amazing and communitcation was great. I think the thing we loved best was the fact that is was a cookhouse. The history made our stay even more interesting.

A Bit of History

Lovely restored "cookhouse" situated on grounds of a lovely mansion is perfect for two. Comfortable spaces, nicely appointed kitchen and a pleasant patio. The neighborhood is very quiet but within easy walking distance of restaurants and shopping on King Street. An added bonus is its proximity to the free loop shuttle that makes it easy to reach the historic center, French Quarter etc

1 week stay in Charleston SC

Clean! Nice walking. It's a small walk, but totally doable and nice. Multiple ways to get uptown. So much to do in the area. The place was perfect. Bed as comfortable as they all say. Nice appliances. I'd stay there again for sure! I am going to miss that shower forever.

As close to perfection as it gets!

Clean, very comfortable, great location, beautiful courtyard, quite neighborhood but close to the action and private parking too! We loved our stay at the Cookhouse Apartment and when back in Charleston, that's where we will want to stay! We parked our car when we got there and got in it again when we left to come home. There is a plethora of good restaurants to choose from, but call way ahead to get reservations, especially at Poogan's Porch or Fleets Landing. Our four nights there went by like a puff of wind. Can't wait to get back!
