About Kristine or Rick
We love visiting our second home as a getaway from busy Honolulu. It is serene and the views are endless. The house sits on 14 very private acres and is accessable from a newly repaved road. Come and share our family getaway and experience the peace for yourself.
Kristine or Rick purchased this Estate in 2009
Why Kristine or Rick chose Laupāhoehoe
We chose this property for the views, cooler climate, privacy, and less rainfall than Hilo town. The property has an amazing 43' seasonal double waterfall. We are big believers in organic farming and are developing an orchard with future plans for coffee and/or tea. We love Laupahoehoe and the whole Hamakua Coast. It is only 30 minutes away from Hilo or Honokaa, an hour from Volcanoes National Park or Waimea, and minutes to many Hamakua coast attractions.
What makes this Estate unique
Off-the-grid does not mean a lack of luxury at this home. All power comes from a PV system with a new state-of-the-art back-up diesel generator that automatically turns on if the battery level gets too low. However, this rarely happens as the 18 solar panels usually provide all the power needed. All water comes from a new water catchment system with double filters down to 5 microns and a UV filter. Yet we didn't scrimp on comfort and the luxuries of home. It is a wonderful base from which to explore all of the Big Island, and from which to take long, leisurely hikes and walks.

Secluded and beautiful
Staying here was really lovely for our group of four adults. The view is amazing and the house is calming, well-furnished, and comfortable. It is somewhat far from things, but if you don’t mind driving a little, pick this place. Directions on Google from Hilo are incorrect, so follow Rick’s directions instead. Rick was very helpful and responsive — when we got lost and had trouble with the dryer (close the door HARD). Highly recommend the house and host.
Great place to stay. Off grid with luxury!
Amazing stay in country paradise
I travel to the big island twice yearly and I have stayed in countless rentals. I can say that this place ruined all future rentals for us. We have always preferred the less-hustled and expansive country living known on the Hamakua coast. This is the most idyllic cottage I’ve even seen. There’s an expansive unobstructed ocean view, rolling green country hills, abundance of fruiting trees, a 2 tiered waterfall, and a wrap around lanai to relax and absorb all this nature. The home itself is cozy, bright, and spotless, and 100% off grid which is amazing! There is snorkel gear, chairs, and assorted beach equipment to borrow as well.
The owner Rick is fantastic at expedient communication, and is a wealth of knowledge about the island. He was always immediately available via text and even checked in regularly to assure the comfort of our stay.
The entire property is meticulously cared for by a nearby resident named Darrin who is also a wealth of local knowledge and one of the sweetest people we’ve ever met, and truly treats this property like it’s his own.
Overall, if I could afford this property, I would move here tomorrow. It’s truly like a dream. If you’re looking for a RELAXING stay away from the hustled crowds of Kailua, you’d be hard pressed to find a better property to unwind. It’s truly a one of a kind paradise.
Beautiful setting. Clean home. Comfortable beds. Quiet and peaceful. Great place for rest and relaxation.
Beautiful base for exploring Big Island.
Just the right kind of big light space to begin and end your day on the Big Island. We deeply enjoyed the open, light-filled house. With cool and tranquil breezes and stunning views of slopping green and grassy hills down to the blue ocean, our 10 year anniversary trip to the Big Island of Hawaii could not have been better. This is a unique spot to experience: off the grid, clean and ample house was comfortable and relaxing. Rick was responsive, knowledgable and helpful to us during our stay on Hawaii.
If you want to get away from the crowds and enjoy an 180 degrees ocean view, hear birds singing, cows mooing, and not be bothered by any neighbors or houses in sight, this is the place for you. We enjoyed a week of solitude, quiet, and ocean and pastoral views, along with trips to Laupahoehoe Point, Honokaa, Paapaloa, and Waimea. It is remote and 45 minutes to Hilo, but it's a beautiful drive. The house is well-stocked and we spent most of our time on the lanai, just taking in the amazing view. It did rain a fair bit (only one day without any rain) but never for very long. The weather changed hourly and we saw some full double rainbows over the ocean. We hope to return for another relaxing vacation.
Helicopter rides, off road tours, Volcanos National Park, Mauna Kea Observatory, Hilo Zoo, waterfalls, Hilo and Pahoa farmer's market (don't miss this!), Waipio Valley.
