About this property
Private Villa on 2 Acres with Chef and Saltwater Pool
Moon Hill is a unique oasis of seclusion, escape and serenity that is located on 2 acres at the foot of a rainforest, on the eastern side of the island of Nevis. The property is accessed through a private gate and is situated at the top of a hill.
Moon Hill welcomes our guests from the moment they enter the gate, leaving the daily worries and routines behind and settling into ultimate relaxation. We have created an atmosphere of tranquility, presence, and peace that permeates the spaces in and around the villa. We appreciate living in the heart of nature and it is important for us to use all natural products , and avoid hard chemicals wherever possible.
The House
The house itself is located on the site of an old existing Great House of a sugar plantation. The house overlooks the old estate property and many of the stonework found in the house were hand cut from the existing centuries' old buildings on the estate.
The villa itself is a one-story house with shuttered screen doors which open from within onto a 40' covered veranda with an open terrace for sunbathing, stargazing, hammock swinging, morning coffee, cocktail hour, and listening to the many birds and wildlife.
From the front balcony you'll have unobstructed and magnificent views of the Caribbean Sea with Antigua, Barbuda (on a clear day), Montserrat, and Guadeloupe visible from the balcony. From the rear you'll be captivated by the spectacular views of Mt. Nevis - a mountain which rises to over 3,000 feet, covered in a lush tropical rainforest.

Tessie, our property manager, has been with us for over 20 years and is like family. She is available for your enjoyment and will prepare Caribbean style meals three days per week's stay.
The cost includes any ingredients for the three days Tessie is cooking. She will shop and source local ingredients for the meals she is preparing for you and can personalize any meals to suit any dietary restrictions or to suit your liking.
On the days she is cooking, she will prepare a local soup, fresh salad, main course (fish, chicken or vegetable) and dessert.
If you wish, you can extend her services for the entire week at an additional cost.
Your stay at Moon Hill is important to us and we hope you create memorable experiences, while immersed in the undisturbed and secluded peace and beauty of Nevis.

About the host
Hosted by Jonathan Haldane

The profile picture was taken of me a couple of years ago on one of the beaches in Nevis. While we live most of the time in Toronto where I run a travel technology company, I have been going to Nevis as a family since I was about 15 years old - I have truly grown up on the island. We love travelling and have visited many destinations throughout Europe, South America, U.S. and Mexico and, I guess, we would probably be considered "beach bums" more than city or ski bums. I can say that, after many years of travelling, there is truly nothing like Nevis anywhere in the world.
Why they chose this property
My parents built the villa over 30 years ago when there were very few other houses on the island – they built the house even before the Four Seasons came to Nevis. My parents were actually on their way to St Bart's at the time and happened to stop off on Nevis and never left. They paced out two acres and built the villa at the top the hill where the original Great House was located hundreds of years ago. The house was called “Moon Hill” because on the night of any full moon, the whole ocean lights up with a ribbon of light, seemingly coming to the house itself across the water. It is an amazing sight to see.
I spent my teenage years and every year thereafter visiting the island, staying at our house, and now, with my own family, we have spent many holidays since on the island. The people you will meet on the island and the energy that you will feel there is unlike anything you will find anywhere else. It is a very special place and we are very lucky to be able to consider Nevis as much our home as our home in Toronto.

What makes this property unique
Our ties to the island and our family history with the island has created deep bonds with people there. The Nevisians (the locals who live on Nevis) show us the side of humanity and a connection to world wisdom that has been lost in most other places. Having Tessie, our cook and house manager, look after you during your stay will give you that same connection to see the island as a local and be able to see the wisdom that has been lost to many if you are open to doing so. If you are looking for a place that has peace, seclusion and privacy, this is it. If you are wanting an all-inclusive resort type of experience, there are probably better destinations and islands for you. As I have said already, there is something in the air and the energy of this island that will captivate your soul as it has done with our family for two generations.
If you want to just eat at the villa and never leave, as some people do, you will find that the days pass quickly just sitting by the pool and watching the weather approach from hundreds of miles away across the Caribbean Sea. Alternatively, Nevis has some of the best Chefs and restaurants that you will arguably find anywhere in the world – it is truly a foodie paradise. If you are looking for the best Indian food, there is one of the best chefs from Mumbai on the island, if you like Thai or West Indian flavours, there are world class chefs in several restaurants serving local fresh caught fish or lobster. And then, there is always the Four Seasons which is outstanding for drinks or dinner on the beach watching the sunset.
